I can see it. Glimmering in the darkness ahead of me. I'm flying over a field at light speed and hovering in place over it all at the same time. For this reason, the field while completely unknown to me is now as familiar to me as the back of my hand or the sound of my own voice... at times. Why am I flying? Soaring ahead of me in the distance is the object of my destiny, I'm sure of it. But I have no clue what it is. A mass of shimmering gold and black. From here it seems oddly familiar. It flies further and further from my reaches no matter how fast I try to fly. I feel paralyzed. My blurred hands clench in frustration... ... I'm dreaming. In an instant everything changes. The open spaces and fresh greenness of the field is ripped away and I'm suddenly faced with an old run-down looking house. I stand at the front door, examining it and I'm sure the object is inside. If only I could get in. As if reading my thoughts, the door swings open silently and slowly. I don't feel any malevolence associated with this and cautiously I enter the house. No lights are on, but it's bright and I can see my path perfectly. The inside of the house is unmistakably Japanese, various traditional ornaments litter the house, clear as can be and out of focus simultaneously. None of them matter. Instinctively I go to remove my shoes, but I find them already lined up neatly next to the door. In a distant mirror I catch my reflection - my face covered by what looks like the night sky, but I know to be my mask. I am also wearing a kimono, which is similar in material and print to the mask. As I make my way through the house I can think of nothing but the object. Coming face to face with a paper screen, I'm sure that this is what I'm looking for. I slide it aside and find myself at the base of an ascending staircase. This is very strange for a Japanese house, but this doesn't seem out of place to me. Slowly I climb the stairs, my desire for the object too overwhelming to let me stop or slow down at all. Finally at the top of the stairs I find myself in an attic. Various objects lie under blankets and photographs and random trinkets litter the room. Stooping to pick up a strangely familiar looking photograph, I find it is a still shot of myself as a child - playing happily with my parents... only my face is covered by my mask, obviously not the case in my memory's version of this day. The next photo is one of myself as a teenager with some of my friends at a local wrestling show when I was fourteen - again my mask covers my face. I remember this day perfectly... it was the day I decided to pursue professional wrestling. The next photo shows myself at the age of sixteen entering my dojo - meeting my teacher for the first time... again wearing a mask which I did not even know at the time. I pick up one final photo - my teacher and myself... this time with two masks, one in my hand, one on my face. The mask on my face can not hide the look of fascination as I gaze at the mask in my hands. This was the day I became Night. I nearly jump as a voice booms from behind me. "Well, you've made it this far." There is a satisfaction in the voice... and an underlying urging. I spin and once again I am facing the archbishop. His blurred, malevolent features scowling happily at me. "What is this place?" I ask. He smiles, but his smile brings me no relief. "It's your attic," comes his reply, "you've reached one of the turning points in your life and my guess..." he again smiles as he inspects the photographs in my hand, "... is that your mind is trying to equip you for what comes next." I stare at him blankly. I can not read this man and have never been able to tell if he means me harm or if he's trying to help. Friend or foe? I have no idea. "What comes next?" The question bursts from my lips against my will. I am not sure I trust the archbishop, nor do I want his answer. He seems to pick up on this. "It's important that you ask me that question. I'm glad you did... I must show you something." He replies. And for the first time his voice soothes me. I stand and follow him - he leads me to the window of the attic, opens it and steps through. He vanishes from my sight. I rush to the window and look down, up, left and right, back into the room - there is no sign of him. Seeing no other course of action, I step through the window. Suddenly I am thrown as a mound of dirt ahead of me explodes. I struggle to stand, a ringing fills my ears. Around me I see soldiers fighting with swords, spears, bows... and bombs. Interesting mix. The archbishop's voice replaces the ringing in my ears for just one brief moment. "War comes next. Fulfill your destiny." As my vision starts to get used to my surroundings, I notice the soldiers for the first time. There don't seem to be two forces at war, it seems to be three or four. One of the forces seem to be wearing yellow and red camouflage, while another wears black with strange masks over their faces, while a third seem to be in black and red with bells attached to them. Around me chaos fills the air, when suddenly I am aware that soldiers from those three armies are moving towards me and I am unarmed. The archbishop telling me to take up arms against my enemies comes to mind, but there is nothing within reach for me and I am sure this is my end. Out of the corner of my eye I catch movement and suddenly a fourth force of soldiers are around me, their uniforms black with stars like the night sky. They attack the soldiers advancing on me except for one who grabs me and pulls me to safety behind a clump of nearby trees. "General, this is the place. If you can find it then this war is over." He yells at me, not out of anger, but to be heard over the nearby skirmish, which from the sounds of it seems to be increasing in intensity. "This is it?" I ask him meekly, not knowing what he means. He nods in acknowledgment. "What about you?" And he smiles at me, replying "Don't worry, sir, just because this one ends doesn't mean there won't be another war. I'm sure you'll have many. Good luck, general." With that, he is gone, disappeared towards the sounds of metal colliding on metal, wood and flesh. Explosions expel colorful smoke into the air and screams from the unfortunate caught beneath. I can end all this suffering, if only I could find what I was looking for. But what was it? And then I see it. There... there in the forest! Half buried in the dirt... ... glimmering gold on black. I run to it and start to dig. As the hole materialized I grab hold of the object and pull. It is stuck so I stand and use my whole body - I strain and yank at it, when it effortlessly pops out of the ground and into my hands. I can't believe I have it... I survey it in my hands and for the first time I can see what it is... ... The sVo Hardcore Championship. The name Night in the nameplate. I stare at the belt, fixated. The sounds of battle die out and the sounds of surrender fill the air. The belt is mine, the battle won... ... of course, I'm only dreaming... ... for now. |
