With just one day away from the semi-finals of the Las Vegas tournament, the reality has set in that this may be CJ’s big break. Winning this tournament would be the big break in the big organization that the Underground Hero had not gotten in either Jolt or sWc. And although no one except for Newfield’s nemesis Jimmy Moretti knows the true prize for the victor of the tournament, CJ is taking no chances on slacking off and ‘coasting’ his way through the tournament. Why not? Sure, his competition has been less than stellar throughout the last few weeks, but looking back at those match-ups could lead to the elimination of the Underground Hero in this tournament. The key is to not look back and dwell on the success of the past, but to look into the future and see what may lie ahead… The Storyteller, Newfield’s opponent this week, has been on quite a roll over the past few weeks. He made his debut on Showdown 10 against the International Champion Johnny All Star, where he fought a losing battle against the champion. Afterwards, however, he was put into this tournament for Las Vegas gold, and there is no doubt in Newfield’s mind that the Storyteller will go to any lengths to achieve victory. Thousands and thousands of fans clad in black and gold jerseys surround a small table in one of the corridors of Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Everyone has their sights set on the man sitting at the table, CJ Newfield. It’s a meet-and-greet set up by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Mellon Arena as a promotion for their game against the Atlanta Thrashers tonight at 7pm. Newfield is dressed in a Sidney Crosby jersey, a pair of jeans, and Pens hat, sitting on his head backwards. He meets and signs autographs for any fans that wish to make the trek through the sea of fans to see him. One little boy sparks a particular interest in CJ. He can’t be more than 8 or 9 years old, and instead of wearing black and gold for the Penguins, he’s wearing the just released CJ Newfield shirt (available on sVoshopzone.com, by the way). The child glows with excitement as he gets closer and closer to the Underground Hero…apparently he’s not aware that CJ is the ‘bad guy’ in the organization. As he finally gets to the front of the line, he is speechless…just standing there and smiling at Newfield. “Hey kid, what’s up?” (tentatively) “…nothin.” “What’s your name?” “Andrew…but Drew is good.” “Ah alright. So Drew, who’s your favorite Penguins player?” Drew stands there, silent. “Gonna go all silent on me now? Come on, Drew. You like Sidney Crosby? Evgeni Malkin? Jordan Staal?” Drew shakes his head and gives a short, simple answer. “No.” At this point, Newfield is dumbfounded. This meet-and-greet is supposed to be about the Penguins, not sVo. Hell, Newfield is confident that 98% of the people around him don’t know what the sVo is. The only reason most of them are here is because they’re probably waiting for the Sidney Crosby appearance scheduled for about 20 minutes from now. Some of these people may have recognized him from his work in KCW (Keystone Championship Wrestling), where he became the company’s first ever double-champion. It’s also possible that they recognize him from his work in Jolt. It’s hard to tell, really. But what is obvious is that Drew knows him and isn’t the least bit interested in talking about the Penguins or Sidney Crosby. “Not a fan of the Penguins, then? Alright then…” Fuck it. Talk about yourself. Hype yourself up. Make people remember you. THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE GOOD AT, YOU MORON. “…who’s your favorite sVo superstar?” Drew’s face lights up much like it probably did on Christmas morning. “…CJ Newfield.” “Who? Who’s that?” Drew smiles even wider and points at the Underground Hero. “Me? Oh come on. Why would you like me?” Drew shrugs and smiles. “Okay okay, I know. I’m hard NOT to like. But what about the Storyteller? You think he’s gonna win this week?” “…no.” “You’re right. He won’t. He’s facing me. And we both know that since he’s facing me, it’s going to be verrrrrrrrry difficult to pull off a win. ESPECIALLY since there is a shot at being the first ever Las Vegas champion on the line. He’s a psycho. All I’ve really gotta do is get him off of any kind of game that he has and drive him over the edge. The guy is unstable. He’s got too many “chinks in his armor,” if you will. But why am I telling you this? You know already.” CJ takes Drew by the hand, startling his parents at first, but CJ gives them an assuring look, letting them know that their son will be alright. He picks Drew up and sits him atop his broad shoulders and acquires a microphone from one of the nearby PA guys. “Okay, everybody. I’ve got an announcement to make.” The tons of fans surrounding the Underground Hero quiet themselves just enough to hear CJ. “This kid right here is Drew. He’s my number one fan, and he’s got something to say. I’ve got a huge match with the Storyteller tomorrow night in Las Vegas for a shot at winning the first ever Las Vegas Championship. And, keeping with my history of making guarantees, I believe Drew’s gonna make one. So Drew, who’s gonna win this match tomorrow night?” CJ lifts the microphone up to Drew, who answers the question. “CJ!” Newfield smiles and sets Drew down. The crowd is cheering, probably more for Drew than for CJ, but nonetheless, they’re cheering. CJ takes out a sharpie marker and signs the back of Drew’s shirt and sends him off. He’s got a smile from ear to ear and couldn’t be happier. He had just met his hero who he will no doubt watch win the right to get into the finals of the Las Vegas tournament, and had gotten his autograph. Watching the Penguins game tonight was no longer the highlight of his day. CJ picks the microphone up and continues talking. “The Storyteller is just another obstacle in my way. Just another step on my journey to sVo supremacy. After I defeat the Storyteller tomorrow night, I will face either El Gimicko, who is the biggest joke that I’ve ever seen step into a wrestling ring, or Brock Alyas, who isn’t even in the same league as me. Either way, I see no reason that I should be leaving next week’s edition of Showdown without that championship around my waist. But I know that if I overlook the Storyteller, I won’t have a very successful match tomorrow night. So like usual, I’m gonna take this one step at a time. So Storyteller, go ahead. Ask Joey Peyton or Joseph Stryker if I’m someone who should be overlooked or taken lightly. See what they tell you. But I guess you could just wait until tomorrow to find out. The choice is yours. I’ll see you tomorrow night in the ring.” CJ drops the mic and sits back down to continue meeting and greeting fans and signing autographs. Tomorrow night will be, by far, the biggest match in CJ’s stay in sVo. And CJ’s gonna take it how he has the entire time. He’s only one step away from achieving greatness. |
