Straight Outta Compton
[ * ]
The scene was set, an abandoned warehouse deep in Compton and some of the most powerful figures in the hood were sitting around the makeshift table in the middle. I sat alongside my brother on one side and a few members of his red rag gang, whilst D-Ice sat on the opposite side with some blue rags, most notably Costello, an older member of the hood that I used to run with back in the glory days. The atmosphere was tense as some of the younger guys on each side tried to stare each other down.

“Look guys, we all know why we are here.”

I tried to break the ice, but my opening statement was met with a sarcastic remark from one of the younger blue rags.

“Yeah your hear to give up cos your boys getting smoked!”

D-Ice turned round to his gang member and stared him down to make sure that he wouldn’t open his mouth again, something that I was thankful for.

“We here because Orlando back in town, and he got this crazy idea of getting everyone back together again and running things like we used to do. No more bloods and crips, lets stand on our own two.”

D-Ice looked around the room after his statement, but was met by most of the guys in the room looking straight down at the floor.

“What we just going to put the last six years behind us? This a stupid idea Orlando!”

I expected a few guys not to be down with the idea, but I had at least hoped that my own little brother would support me, however it seemed that he too thought it was a crazy idea.

There was silence around the room and I felt that I need to stand up and show some leadership here. This was our hood and this was where I grew up. I wasn’t about to let these guys continue to rip it apart just because they were wearing different colors on their heads.

“So what we just gonna carry on killing each other? We just going to carry on giving our money to these bloods and crips? You really think they give a shit about any of you guys. We stand together and we can be strong just like the old days. We can go out there and represent our own hood and not have to get by on some stupid rag that your wearing on your heads from some other hood.”

A few of the guys looked up, they seemed to like the idea of not having to give their money away any more so I continued down that track.

“Any money that we keep from now on could be ours. No longer we gotta give our dollars away and live in shitty houses that are falling down around us.”

D-Ice stood up alongside me, he knew it made sense.

“You know that guys, Fox is right. We need to stop the madness round here that’s been killing ourselves and get back to the old days. We gotta look out for each other and stop taking each other out. This is a historic day right here!”

The mood in the room was rising, T.J stood up and stared right across at D-Ice.

“We equals in all of this? Then maybe we can get back….”

D-Ice stared at T.J before extending a hand out. T.J firmly shook it and there were happy faces all around the room. The hood was one again. However the happiness didn’t last long as the large warehouse doors soon slide open. It seemed someone outside was watching us and didn’t like what they saw. Dozens of blue rags rushed into the opening of the warehouse and opened fire with machine guns. Everything seemed to turn to slow motion as I grabbed hold of T.J and ducked underneath the table. All around I saw bullets slamming into guys I had grown up with. Young guys fell to the concrete all around me, and as I looked up I saw a bullet hurrtile into the chest of Costello on my left. He fell to the floor and lay still. T.J grabbed hold of the piece from his waist and began to bust back, but by then it was too late. The blue rags began to run from the scene of the crime. I slowly stood up and everything returned to normal speed even if my brain was moving at a million miles an hour. As I saw the young guys dead all around me and the blood on the concrete, I knew that we had been double crossed….. but by who?
