I have no real opinion on this subject because I don't really know many Americans but I found this interesting post that all my friends seem to agree on (again, I won't take sides) "Yes Americans we all know you don't like Soccer or Rugby, you prefer your football and baseball. Have you ever wondered why this is the case? It is because on a world scale the USA cannot complete in a global sport. You boast your "World series" but who is playing in the finals? Miami vs fucking Texas or some shit. Get real and step up and get good at proper sports which the whole world plays, there is a reason nobody outside North America plays baseball and it's because it's lame. You can live in your little world where you only play against yourselves or you can prove that you are actually good for something. In any European group the USA wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the World Cup next week." Discuss? |

We came in second place for hockey at the Vancouver Olympics. Look at how well we did at the US Open a year back. But apparently no one else plays hockey or tennis? By the way, the guy's logic is stupid. Capitalism fuels the US economy (like most countries). If people here cared about or wanted to see soccer or rugby, we would certainly have better teams as they would be better funded. The fact of the matter is though that in America we only care about baseball, football, hockey, basketball, tennis, golf, volleyball, figure skating, and a bunch of other sports. Pretty much what everyone else in the world cares about with the exception and addition of a couple sports. Edited by Eddie, Jun 4 2010, 07:51 PM.

If we're not interested in a sport we're not going to play it. It's as simple as that. No one in America cares about soccer so kids aren't brought up playing soccer so America doesn't have a top tier team. We do pretty good for not giving a shit though. |

You can't have a good national soccer team just because of money because you can't buy players from other countries. That's in the traditional football championships. But I see both your points. Why should you care? Think about it, American culture is basically a mixture of European cultures and a tint of Africa and now Asia. I know the answer to the following question but I'm gonna ask it anyway: Why don't you share the soccer fever that is an important part of Africa or Europe? |

There's actually an interesting article on that... http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/worldcup/2006-07-06-soccer-in-the-us_x.htm Another thing is it doesn't really fit into American personalities. Not enough scoring. Kind of silly, but then again, it's like asking why didn't American football catch on in Germany. It just didn't. |

The reason American Football hasnt caught on in Germany is because most people dont have the patience to sit there to watch a game which is an hour long yet takes 3-4 hours to play. Seriously there is just not enough action in American Football, its start, stop, start, stop every 10 seconds. Whereas Football there is almost always something happening and it takes just over 90 minutes to play a 90 minute game. |

What is this "soccer" of which you speak? I know what football is, but what is "soccer"? As a true anti-American, I agree with the guy's post. Americans only play weird sports nobody else plays, because that's what they can win. |

Sorry, I didn't know other countries didn't have ice hockey teams. And we invented a lot of the sports we play... And the reason I'm using soccer is because we are discussing American sports, and that's what we call it. |

How odd. I will from now on refer to Ice Hockey as Foccer", because that's what we call it. Well. Canada has an Ice Hockey team, but that's about it. You didn't invent any of the sports you play. You took sports that already existed, changed the rules and called it something else. Baseball is a weird form of Cricket, from England. American football is a weird form of Rugby, from England. Ice hockey is a weird form of Field hockey, from England. What other sports do you play? :S |

Only difference is people don't actually say foccer. I thought it was ishockey? Countries who competed in ice hockey at the 2010 olympics (in order of ranking): 1 Canada 2 United States 3 Finland 4 Slovakia 5 Sweden 6 Russian Federation 7 Czech Republic 8 Switzerland 9 Belarus 10 Norway 11 Germany 12 Latvia We play pretty much what everyone else plays. Our emphasis is simply placed on certain sports. I disagree with you view of how the sports were created. Using your logic, the guy who made the laptop should not be credited with creating the laptop because it's pretty much a desktop but in a different form. Whoever changed the rules or modified the sport to where it is today is primarily responsible for its existence and commercialization. To clarify a few things though... Abner Doubleday allegedly created baseball, but no one really knows for sure. He was an American. James Naismith created basketball, and he was a dual citizen of Canada and the US. Walter Camp is often credited as the creator of American football. |

Why is it even called American Football? you rarely ever kick the ball. Also Rugby > American Football, pretty much the same thing but Rugby isnt start stop every 10 seconds, I mean the BBC must get really annoyed that they have to keep going back to the studio every 10 seconds for 20 seconds. (<3 BBC for not having adverts). |

I was actually joking about the "foccer" thing. Just making fun of the fact that Americans changed a perfectly fine name for a sport into a really weird and meaningless name ("soccer"). And you are right, we do call it ishockey :P. And I am aware of the fact that more countries than USA plays ice hockey. My point is: why do you change the sports? Rugby was a perfectly fine sport, so why did you have to change it and name it football? That's where the problem lies. |

Okay, the name is stupid, but actually it comes from Britain:
Sports change for largely the same reasons languages do. Why aren't we all still speaking Latin? Why wouldn't any of us be able to communicate with an English speaker here a mere 500 years ago? Things change and evolve into different variations. Why we couldn't leave it as rugby is beyond mean...maybe it was too fast paced for Americans to like (notice how sports like baseball, volleyball, etc are term based)? Who knows. |

As it said in the article Eddie previously linked, at the time it should have become popular here we were busy trying to win our independence from England so we refused to take up the sport. It has never gained much popularity since then... I, for one, think the game is too slow.. but I'm also a baseball fan. |

You're right, America doesn't compete with any foreign soccer (football) teams. That's why we tied England 1-1. |

Pff America are useless, I had a £5 bet on USA beating England 2-1 with Stevie G scoring first. England did the hard bit of Stevie G scoring first. I mean you guys only scored because Rob Green let your goal in. Would have been £75 up if USA had scored again -.- Also why do you call it American Football when you dont even use your feet? |

Don't test me boy :P. You didn't deserve that tie AT ALL. England outplayed USA in pretty much every way. You only managed to tie it because Green did a mistake. By the way, I don't see why everyone is hating Green all of a sudden. Sure, he did a mistake, but it's not his fault England didn't win. When England gets 15 shots at the target and only manages to get 1 in, it is either bad play from Rooney and Gerrard, or good goalkeeping by Howard. Personally, I'll go with Howard being a beast. Besides, Green had a few sick saves during the second half, that another goalkeeping easily would have let in. Did you know that America's playstyle is almost the exact same as how England plays? That's because all the good American players play in England. The only difference between the American players and the English players is that the American ones was born in USA. So my opinion is still that America sucks at playing football. |
