Emo. Goth. Scene Kid. Grunger. Chav. Pikey.

The List goes on. Yet they hardly ever get used in the correct context, and that's something that bugs me. A LOT.

I'm not sure if all of these are used/if others are in other countries, but these are the most familiar to me.

Fair enough, this may end up being an English only debate. :P But then again, anyone with a Vague idea as to what they are can join. :P

Where I live it's kind of goes that Chavs/Pikeys just have something against anyone who's not really like them, usually resorting to 'Grunger' or 'Emo' as the 'insult'. Even when they have no idea what the person really is, etc.

I don't know where the debate is. Is it a debate over what the stereotype is? Because I have no doubt that we'll agree that stereotypes are used to judge a group of people incorrectly and unfairly.

It's like the stereotype that ALL teenagers are party fiends and potheads. This isn't true at all.

I do have a lot of friends, and I do like to be a pothead. So at least I'm part of that stereotype XD .

Grunger: Derived from the term and genre of Grunge music [eg. Nirvana etc.]. Baggy jeans and drugs sums that stereotype up ].

Gill, I suppose it's more of a discussion than a debate, but I felt it was sightly more at home here. But it's interesting to see what people think each 'group' actually means, a debate can be derived from that.

Aren't these liek "flicks" or something? Aren't stereotypes like calling an Asian narrow-eyed, or calling a black guy good at sports, and stuff like that?

Very true Gill ;) . Basically, stereo typing is creating a certain image and applying that to a certain group, subculture, etc. i.e. All goths wear black clothing. Stereo typs might sounds like facts, but they can be particulary offensive to the group in question.

Ganlo, Any other stereotypes are welcome to be discussed/debated here, but my main focus are these ones usually used by teens/young adults nowadays.

Wikipedia

A stereotype is a generalized perception of first impressions: behaviors presumed by a group of people judging with the eyes/criticizing ones outer appearance (or a population in general) to be associated with another specific group. Stereotypes, therefore, can instigate prejudice and false assumptions about entire groups of people, including the members of different ethnic groups, social classes, religious orders, the opposite sex, etc. A stereotype can be a conventional and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image, based on the assumption that there are attributes that members of the "other group" have in common. Stereotypes are forms of social consensus rather than individual judgments. Stereotypes are sometimes formed by a previous illusory correlation, a false association between two variables that are loosely correlated if correlated at all. Though generally viewed as negative perceptions, stereotypes may be either positive or negative in tone.

Read if you are interested in knowing what stereotypes actually are. :P

Huh. I only ever heard of emo and goth, along with more common ones like geek and nerd and jock and prep and stuff like that (dunno if they are actually steryotypes, though.)

I guess steriotyping is...bad? Sorry for the dumb explanation. I dunno how else to say it. Like a bad first impression, steriotyping is getting on the wrong foot with a group or just a person. They could be true or false, but it's best (imo) to find out -something- before making harsh accusations if they aren't yet verified.

Also, please don't call me a racist, but I don't get how calling an Asian narrow-eyed is racist...just a derogatory term, I guess? Or something else?

You're right Yow, that isn't racist, but it can be very offensive however, and shouldn't be used in any case.
