Yeah, the media got a pretty bad burn because of that. They don't want to risk another. Shame actually. Seeing the media getting pwnt is always fun :P .

I actually did it in my current event (of course I knew about it before the silly newspaper did :D) and my title (I think it's pretty l337 really) was LHC: Doomsday Device or Miracle Machine?

They said it was gonna solve the 'mysteries of the universe' like 'dark matter'. Ooooh...k.

Well the Media will probably grab hold of it quickly as soon as it gets close the actual collisions happening.

But the sites I use aren't like, mass media ones anyway.

It won't Dani. :P And if it did, it's not a lot of people getting hurt, it's the whole world disappearing :P

*Very reassuring ^o)*

Eh, don't worry about it too much - the chance of it happening is the same chance of it spitting out giant man eating dragons,

Yea, particles collide with earth at speeds that are even faster with no apparent side effects almost constantly anyways...

No one actually believes that it will destroy the world, it's just stupid that we actually do this. Why not give the more than 30b euros to africa and help the poor. No, those stupid cientist had to blow it all into a stupid machine that will give them facts. No, it will not find the cure for cancer. Before that ,the world explodes >_>. All this to say that knowing something about dark matter or something isn't more important than the lives of 1m people...not even of 1 <.<

first of october I'm going to a lecture about particles and the LHC, given by a Dutch Nobel price winner, and leading physicist on this field in our country. So I'll probably learn some new stuff ^_^ .

Hmm...if he's a Nobel Prize winner, you'd thought you'll learn something new! If you don't, you should start to worry about the accuracy of his facts! :p
------
Master-how do you know it won't find a cure to cancer? Are you one of the top physicists of the world? You say `Before that, the world explodes`.

Let's make it clear...the world will not end. These collisions occur daily in our stratosphere, at faster speeds. Has a black hole been formed? No, because we wouldn't be here. That's not from me, that's from every scientist in the project, including Stephan Hawking. I'm sure you know who he is? Well...I hope thats settled...

Uhh, I don't know if anyone has posted anything like this, I don't really feel like going through all the posts though.

This video explains the LHC very well I thought.

... LOL. Yeah.

Anyway.

This is actually where you're wrong. First off, 30 billion euros won't do anything more in Africa than 1 billion can do, to be honest. Except get them up to speed with us (what with all the corruption we have. lol). Second of all, the machine is far from stupid. And actually, 'No, it will not find the cure for cancer.' may in fact be wrong. They have to test it, but they say that if they spun the particles more slowly then they might release the kind of radiation required to kill cancer cells, and with a few minor adjustments could control it. (think the XKCD death ray if you've read it, or super powered x-rays.) They'd be targetable and akin to regular radiation, but more powerful, so basically a 2 year job can be done in 4 five minute sessions... DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY.

Interestingly people rarely never complain about the obscene cost of movies, or the paychecks of the world's top earners...even if they don't produce results (golden parachute, anyone?). Any mention is closer to a wistful envy.

But when it comes to a MAJOR scientific experiment, suddenly the money is being spent frivolously.

Here's the thing: until an experiment works, you cannot know what it will result in, short OR long-term. Yesterday's pea plant breeding gave us today's genetic predisposition and may give us tomorrow's genetic engineering. Frivolous as the question may have seemed, the answer is more than a little useful.

Edit: LOL, Cactus!

I totally agree Cactus and Bunni. Like I said before, you can't be sure that it won't do this, or that it will do that. Thank you for the information regarding the cancer cure, Cactus. If they do manage to control it, this experiement will be a success, no matter the costs.
