Well, eddie, to your post I can only say that you use the same line of argumentation as any other atheist: Taking the bible by word. You think we do that and you fail at that tbh. Those metaphors are from the Old Testament, a thing written down by HUMANS over 2500 years ago |

So? It's THE BIBLE. If you want to say that all old books are untrue, the New Testament is going on 2,000 years. And FYI THEY AREN'T METAPHORS. You call every single quote from the old testament a metaphor, do you even know what one is? A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things without using like or as. There are absolutely no metaphors in lines condoning the beating of slaves or killing of children. It's in plain text: kill kids and beat slaves. And by not believing in that, you are calling the holy Bible untrue. Also, guess what? The New Testament was written by "HUMANS" too. Frankly, the not taking it word for word excuse is complete and total crap. The words are as clear as day, but something like giving all of your money to the poor (NEW TESTAMENT), killing kids, or beating slaves just seems so insane today that aren't going to take it word by word. Bullshit? Jesus in the Bible supposedly says that everyone should donate everything they own to the poor over and over and over again. It's perhaps the clearest message in there. Considering you are typing on a computer right now Master, you're going to hell because you haven't given that to the poor. Hell, do you want to know one of the richest organizations in the world today? The Catholic Church. |

I never understood how the Church can be so wealthy, if Jesus himself told the human race to help the poor. As far as I know, the Catholics so far have given more promises than actual help. They say that if you submit yourself to God and Jesus, you will have a better life after death. Well, what about this life? Maybe they should give food rather than faith? And how come the Pope wears golden clothes, while millions in the world wears none? Is the Pope worth more than the starving families in Africa? No. Christianity has in my opinion, inflicted more pain to this world, than help. |

Two words: dark ages. Ever wonder where we would be if the church didn't ban science for 400 years? |

So guys, if you think Religion is so bad, why do you think that hundreds of million people believe in it and it actually helps them? Why do you think that I believe in it if I hear so much shit from everywhere? Do you think I'm brainwashed or what? In the Dark Ages, EVERYONE was "bad" or at least not comparable with our times. What do you guys hold on? Nothing! Sad life... |

Because millions of people are stupid? I mean who in their right mind would want to live for an eternity? Get bored after a couple of 100 years. Then of course you cant kill yourself as you can't die. Sounds like so much fun....NOT! What do you hold on to? An imaginary man (If god is real its clearly a man as a woman wouldnt screw things up this badly (Geroge Carlin FTW)). It's clear which group is the sad one. If we are all gods children, what makes jesus so special? :P Edited by Saj_61, Oct 23 2009, 05:49 PM.

I really wouldn't doubt it Dani... it would have been declared "not a planet" hundreds of years ago :lmao: Master... 1.) Okay... sans false hope, how does religion help people? Let's leave it at that. 2.) The reason everyone was "bad" in the dark ages was because of Christianity. Science was starting to propose new theories, so they banned science for roughly 400 years. 3.) I actually disagree. Because I am agnostic and do not accept a mythical figure as the great leader of the world, I believe I live a better life... how? -I do not have to follow any restrictions but the law -I don't have to give 10% of my weekly income to an already rich organization, meaning I have more money to spend on myself, friends, etc -I can spend my Sundays more productively... actually since I stopped going to church my test grades have improved due to me having more studying time. Better grades = better job = more money = more happy -In science courses, I don't have to think to myself "does this interfere with my religious beliefs?" -Many more but unfortunately I don't have the time to outline them here |

Because people who believe in a higher power either dont have faith in themselves, so they place it with something higher, they want a simple explanation for everything without looking beyond the obvious, or because they need something to blame all the bad stuff that happens to them on a higher power because they dont want to take responsibility for all the things they did. I believe in god, just not in god as a higher power. I believe that I am a god, and that I control and can alter my own life and destiny. Edited by Blackt3ars, Oct 25 2009, 09:57 PM.

Since I haven't posted for a while: I think of the Bible as a book of morals. For example, the Ten Commandments. Which all translate(in some way) to law in Real Life. Atheism is perfectly valid, as is Christianity. And for another bit of information, if you go anywhere in the world, there will be many different religions, or belief systems. It is impossible to force people to believe in one thing. Take the 13th century, for example. Christianity was ABSOLUTE in Europe(and most of Asia). A Heresy developed, which is known as Catharism. These heretics(Taken from Greek meaning roughly "Believe what you want to believe" believed that that world and by proxy, the Church was evil. The world wasn't supposed to last, so they didn't believe in matrimony(marriage) or Baptism(these are the major sacraments they didn't believe in). What happened to them if they were caught? Killed, hung, burnt at the stake. Books that put forward heresy were burned. Catharism died out well before the 14th Century because of a lack of organization(apparently). Not from their members being killed. From this example, assimilation does NOT work. TL;DR version: You can't force others into believing what you believe in. Another point: Catholics believe in God and Christ. Jewish believe in God. Buddhist people believe in Buddha. Muslims believe in Allah. Atheists believe that there is no God/higher power. Satanists either believe in Satan, or in some cases, other Humans(LeVayen Satanism, I believe). The list goes on. Is any one religion better than the other? Others may believe so, but they AREN'T. |

I like what Nick said here. I like the concept of religion.... But not the people that follow it, generally. Many christians find that I'm an atheist and immediately they're jumping down my throat trying to make me believe in their God and Jesus and the Holy Trinity. Trust me, I grew up with it, and I'm old enough to decide that no, I do not in fact believe in it. If people actually followed their religions the way they were meant to be followed, the world would be a great people with or without whichever god they believed in. Except satanists. Satanists do not in fact worship Satan, they worship... Well, to say themselves puts them in a bad light, but what they worship is the concept of self preservation... Of looking out for number 1. They call it Satanism because it is such a complete opposite of what we know of Christianity. |

I'd like to point out the fact that religion is like communism- it would never fully work because humans are like this |

And are you aware of the fact that Communism has been labeled has a BAD thing by most of the civilized world? However, I do agree with you on that matter. Religion would never work with humans. For instance, religion could have worked if those who were religious were open and accepted other people's views. Most religious people do not. Many Christians believe that Christianity is the only religion and that God is the only god. Throughout the history they have never accepted any other religions and have always tried to turn others to Christianity. |

And for the record, I am in fact an atheist. The only reason for this is that religion does not appeal to me. I do not want nor need what religion offers. To pray to a god for help, is like saying "Hey, I can't live this life on my own. Help me!". I believe my life was given to me and me alone. I will alone be responsible for my actions and I seek no forgiveness from any higher power. The only forgiveness that matters to me, is that of those who may have been affected by the wrongs I have done. The first thing that strikes me when I hear about Christian people is their fear of death. They are so terrified that their time is limited and that one day it will all be over. They refuse to accept this as a fact and cling themselves to an ancient promise of an afterlife, that will be better than their current life. This gives them a sense of relief, seeing that this is not the end. I on the other hand, believe that we only get one chance. I prefer to make the best out of this life, rather than hope for a better life after death. In other words, I am an atheist. |

The reason why so many people believe in a higher power and an afterlife is because that's all they have. For instance, the poor people of Africa. Their lives are so horrible that all they have is the hope of a better life next time. When they have no food and no hope, they clinger to the one belief they have left, that God will save them. Needless to say, this is WRONG. The world should not have made the mistakes they have (colonies etc), but it has. We have treated the poor like shit for ages and now it is too late. Does this mean that religion is a good thing? NO. Those who are in need of help, should get real physical help, rather than promises. However, the world is not as it should be, we all know that. Help rather than religious faith. And to you David, I believe that you have grown up with Christianity all around you. As a child, you absorb everything around you, including Christianity. I do not loathe for being what you are and believing the things you do, but I cannot stand the fact that you try to force your beliefs onto others. That has always been and always will be, the biggest flaw with Christianity. |
