First off, let me apologize if there was any misunderstanding regarding this statement. I was just using the template I made to create what I am about to post below and it occurred to me that I may have been speaking of my own work, here. When I made that template, I took the burgundy skin I made for the comp and basically just deleted a bunch of layers out of it, reworked it to make it hopefully easy to understand how to use, then uploaded it. My point being that I had never seen that particular 'skin' on a car before. So while I recoginized my hood vents, I didn't see what I am now assuming was 'my' grey, I just looked at it for what I thought it was...a new skin. So sorry if it sounded like I was tooting my own horn there, if that's what anyone thought. ![]() ==================================================== Alright ZR, sorry for the lag in response, but I've actually been busy working up a little something for you. ![]() So this started out as me just intending to provide a quick example for some possible alternate methods and ways to think about making hood vents and such. For this I thought it might be nice to see it on an actual car and that template was just sitting there looking oh so much like a blank slate...soooo...long story short, it kind of turned into this... ZR...just because I think you're cool, I think you deserve a ride that is just as cool. May I present to you for your personal enjoyment and driving pleasure, the... Toyeca ZR1! [xIMG]http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/8748/toyecamythiczr1screens0.jpg[/xIMG] It comes complete with wicked styling and a standoffish appeal that will make opposing racers both tremble with fear and lust with envy...and it will soon be coming to a computer near you. I'll be uploading this as a 1024x1024 skin with both paint variants and a new set of parameters that will hopefully give this classic car a new kind of appeal. ![]() Who is it that rulez? That's right, people no longer have to wonder, my friend! With this sporty ride everyone will know that...ZIPPERRULEZ! And just to make sure no one forgets it, Mythic Motors has added in this special one-time offer our exclusive Deluxe Tribal Graphics Package that will leave no doubts whatsoever who's comin' to take first place. ![]() From me to you, bud...enjoy. ![]() [xIMG]http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/8748/toyecamythiczr1screens0.jpg[/xIMG] Oh yeah, about those vents... If I may suggest, I think you might be able to project a more believable illlusion of realism if you were to shade your vents just a bit differently. In general, one needs to think about both what kind of shape you are trying to describe, and...if you were to place a big light above said vent...how would said light illuminate the surfaces you are trying to portray? In this case, the basic premise is to create the illusion of a hole. In the case of your particular hole...or hood scoop...it's a fairly broad area that dips down and then disappears entirely into the hood. It is quite natural to think that since you want to describe that whole shape, then that whole shape needs to be shaded. This is only partially true. It does need to be shaded, but not necessarily by just throwing a bunch of black on top of it, as many people tend to do...including me before I learned a better way. Now don't get me wrong, you will be throwing black on there, but you should be careful of exactly where you put it and how much you apply...and that's not your only option, either. Like many other things, it can often be useful to use several different techniques to build up a more believable illusion. The first thing I believe is important to consider, is that there is going to be somewhere between little and no black at all on areas that are fully exposed to the light...such as that entire length of the scoop...until that is, it goes under the hood and is in complete shadow. So the first thing I do is to create a vector shape using the Pen Tool so I have a nice clean edge that can be easily modified if I want to change the shape of the scoop. Then I generally use 3-4 different elements to 'build it up'. Layer Styles Remember that all 3D form is described in this type of work by the use of Light and Shade. THAT is what these Layer Styles allow you to do. It's not an Inner Glow, it a way to easily place a soft gradient around the outside or center of any shape you desire. It's not a Gradient Overlay, it a way for you to easily work with gradients that you can later adjust by simply moving some sliders around instead of having to mess with the Gradient Tool. It's not Bevel & Emboss, it a method for applying shade and highlights to all manner of shapes to create various kinds of visual effects. It's all about how you think about it. ![]() [] The first thing I do is apply an Inner Shadow Layer Style. This usually allows me to shade things pretty well by playing with the angle the light is coming from as well as the Size and Distance. As a general rule of thumb, you want to make use of this to subtly describe your form, rather than laying it on like a thick coating of frosting...with the darkest part being near-black and only covering the areas that are completely in shadow. [] Next up I duplicate that layer, remove the previous Layer Style and apply an Inner Bevel. I will often use this as additional shading to either compliment the Inner Shadow or have it cover areas that the Inner Shadow doesn't quite get to. It defaults to pure black, so just to be safe I usually nudge that up a bit and then quite often I will turn the transparency for the highlight down completely so I am just using it to shade. Sometimes the highlight works, but just be careful not to create a sharp edge where your scoop is supposed to be smoothing flowing into the rest of the hood. [] Finally, just to add a little more visual pop and interest, and to slightly enhance the illusion of reality, I wll duplicate the layer again and this time apply an Outer Bevel. This is used this time with just a highlight and no shading to place a soft highlight on the top outer edge that gives the impression that the scoop or vent is slightly raised and molded into the surface of the car. [] Lastly, as an optional technique...you can duplicate this layer yet again and place it underneath all the rest. You would then apply a Gradient Layer Style that started out basically as the base color of your paint. You would then add chips/tabs to the gradient...one that is slightly lighter for a highlight for instance, to depict a shape that is slightly convex (or rounded towards you)...and one that is darker, to add some shade to the paint as it recedes back into the hole in the hood. This is one technique that I might be tempted to use for a really long one such as yours ZR, since it would allow you to shade the surface without actually 'blackening' it. In the skin above, I did not use that last technique, but I did use the first three...on both the large hood scoop and the smaller vents. Just so you can see how it might look. ![]() Well ZR, I hope you enjoy your new car (once I get it finished and uploaded, lol), and I further hope that you don't mind that I gave you a few suggestions. ![]() [size0]Images uploaded with ImageShack.us |

Lol...thanks, LWG. That's a nice thing to say, and I appreciate it. <gives flourish> It's all in the presentation. Seriously though, I'm not doing anything that you guys can't do...and that's why I've been spreadin' the love in the form of tips. I'm sorry if my intent was not made clear. ![]() In fact...why don't we just officially say I am not in this competition. That last skin I posted doesn't even have any RVL branding on it, so I wouldn't say that even qualifies. Like I said, that was going to be just a quick example, lol. And I'll be working on my first one some more before handing it in so it will be a quality product, but even then I honestly think I like some of the other cars that were posted more than mine, so I'm personally happy throwing my vote elsewhere. So I'm in it so far as I will be contributing a skin, but I won't be eligible for voting. That cool? ![]() I know it's weird, but I'm one of those guys that just doesn't need to 'win' stuff. I would genuinely get a lot more satisfaction from helping you guys come up with some killer skins and letting you guys duke it out at the polls. ![]() Things like this are an opportunity for personal gain. It's a chance to not only support the RVL community and get one of your skins played online, it's a great way to hone your skills and maybe learn a few new things by playing around with something you haven't tried before. I'll tell you what...I bet the people who have already posted are feeling pretty good about themselves right now...and rightly so. I'm not kidding, you guys...these are some of the best cars I have seen done for this game...ever. For me, I like seeing that...I like possibly having had some small part in that...even if it's only a result of me encouraging someone to look a little deeper inside themselves to find what I know is already there. Again, I know it's weird, but that's the stuff that -I- care about. And even if I had nothing to with it at all, I personally like being part of a positive effort that will benefit the entire community. Does that work for everybody?
[size0]Or did I just sound like an a jerk?

I am on holidays, I am going to have all my time to make my car I quickly read the answers. But the problem, it is because I know perfectly what I want, the objective is to remain faithful to the style of Re-Volt. To put no gradation on the roof is wanted, the objective is not to leave clearly the gradation appear, the forum RVL is light blue, the car is thus light blue. Gradations serve to be "harmonious" with various logo RVL on the car, the gradation is not a hyper element thus mattering, the gradation is there only to have an clean depiction As for the lights.... They are the lights of original Toyeca, these lights can go on any repaint of Toyeca, why should I change them ? Maybe it is not going to please you ? For the first time, I show myself a little bit stubborn and I am sorry about it. Nothing will be modified on my car. ![]() Except maybe, the back logo which seems to me small |
