I am currently coding a Re-Volt executable to operate under the 3DFX Glide API. Some of you may not know, but I myself am a "Purist" to 3DFX, and will continue to support software and games supported by them. If it wasn't for this awesome company, we wouldn't be at the PC 3D gaming age that we are at today.

Although Re-Volt was developed at the time 3DFX was still alive and kicking, the performance was not as I expected from my 3DFX Voodoo3 3000 AGP. So, after all of these years later, I am now able to develop an executable that will be able to fully utilize the Glide API.

Of course, you are going to need a 3DFX card, or a 3rd party card with a 3DFX chipset to run this. IT WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT A 3DFX CARD!!! No, really...

You can get them off of eBay, and other retailers, but they are not going to be cheap! :D

Well, I doubt they can use a 3DFX card, because their motherboard has either a PCI Express 16x, or an AGP 8x graphics bus, but there are several people out there with 3DFX cards and old motherboards (and old computer machines themselves) that have a PCI or AGP 1x/2x graphics bus who want to play Re-Volt with all the good stuff.

Besides, you don't have to downgrade your current graphics card if you use a PCI 3DFX card. Nearly every computer or computer motherboard these days has AT LEAST two PCI slots. Just install the card, then install drivers, and you're set to go. The 3DFX card will kick in whenever a game with the Glide API is launched.

I thought 3dfx company was defunct and its technology were merged into Nvidia.

I'll see if I can get a 3DFx card
It wouldn't hurt visiting my blog or Re-Volt frontend's :)

That is a true fact KDL. 3DFX was just boosting performance of their awesome cards, and not really adding features after the Voodoo2 was released, which leads to their loss in the computer market, being sold out, and then being purchased by nVIDIA.

Surprisingly, this modification is not working with any of my Voodoo5 5500 cards, so stay away from those if you wish to play this, after beta testing and releasing is finished of course. But, my coding seems to cooperate with anything below a Voodoo3 so far. The drivers of the Voodoo5 will not cooperate with the EXE file. so be warned.

Nvidia dropped the Glide sometime after they aquired 3dfx. And Namco's right, Voodoo's did change the face of gaming. One curious matter i have been thinking about lately, if u could help, is would i be better off building a seperate tower specifically to play old 3dfx games (UT, Quake etc) ...or could u use some glide wrapper / emulator on my current 8800 Ultra in order to get this game to run like it used to?

Thing is, i can run this game but its not as fluid or butter smooth as it used to be. i dont seem to be losing any fps, its just the scenery kinda looks juddery when i turn the car (most noticable on both ghost towns). its like a rendering issue or something. I think i can see it also at the end of a race as the cam is circling, kinda slightly jumpy and not as smooth as i remember yrs ago.

It was like 4or 5 years ago, that i bought Voodoo Banshee 16mb AGP. Damn this card was the hottest thing i've ever used. It looked cute, i pretty much liked the dual core versions ot Voodoo cards, but if they all are working at this core temperature, i will advise anyone to stay away from them

If you want to read my monologue on 3dfx:

[offtopic]3dfx are really dead because they played the proprietary game and lost. Outside competition didn't seem like a threat to them with their undefeatable Glide API. Other card distributors were unable to use 3dfx's technology unless they literally bought from 3dfx and licensed and all that (third party cards with 3dfx chipsets, barely "competition")- and Microsoft's desire to make a compelling 3D API (DirectX) even more useable led to other card manufacturers designing relatively cost efficient cards that ran using DirectX as the API- and at a cost that made the "upgraded" 3dfx's look like polished turds, even if they weren't.

Now, think about this- if 3dfx had made Glide API open all along, at least open enough for manufacturers to utilize- other, completely unrelated card manufacturers would've came in and made cards based around it- 3dfx would've had direct competition in the mid to late 90's, Glide API would've thrived (and not in the one dimensional "just ready for failure in the end" way it did), 3dfx would've had a reason to make the best card for their API (rather than the competitors), which is good for the consumer- and most likely DirectX would've either been adopted by all parties later on (3dfx included) along with Glide API, or DirectX would've failed and Glide API would've gotten updated a lot more. OpenGL also may not have happened, or would've been merged in with Glide. Just one of my theories. They really just messed up hard because they thought their sh*t didn't stink, haha, when everyone's does.[/offtopic]

elston has kinda lost his passion for Re-Volt and it's understandable- he might not be in too much of a hurry to do anything for this game, just a word of insight.
