"You're good Idanyen, but you're no Atmos."

Jayden knew it was a compliment, but he didn't like it either way. He never claimed to be as good as Atmos. He was a merc legend for a reason. Comparing him to Atmos was prodding his ego, which he'd rather keep in check. Egotists didn't last long in Phoenix. Well, not until you've earned the right to be one. Taking the remark from the drill instructor in stride, Jayden jumped out of the simulator and walked to the locker room. Jersey was waiting for him at the doors.

"Nice shot there man, I totally didn't see that one coming," the black haired soldier said as they walked through the double doors. "Maybe next time you'll let me get off a few shots so that I don't feel like a complete incomp?"

Jayden smirked. "A few shots wouldn't help you much then, eh?" The two laughed as Jayden opened his lockers.

"A couple of the others were heading out to Remorra's later tonight. You gonna tag along? Mayael said she might show."

"I guess, sure."

The dingy pilots bar reverberated with heavy bass as Jayden walked in. The small circle of pilots he called friends had converged around the corner booth and several of the nearby tables. There were pitchers of beer floating around from merc to merc, and a glass appeared in front of him as he sat down.

Ivan, a sandy haired stick of a man raised his glass as Jayden poured himself a drink. "To the cadet killer, owner of newbs, Idanyen, who finally graces us with his presence!" The others laughed and raised their glasses, and Jayden joined in.

Over the next couple of hours, the pilots drank and recounted the days training experiences. It wasn't until Jersey passed out that they called it a night. Drunk as he was, Jayden was a bit disappointed. Mayael didn't show.

Swallowing a trio of aspirin and downing a cup of cold coffee, Jayden wished he hadn't had so much to drink. After a quick breakfast, he made his way to the simulators. There was a gathering at the screens; a fight between three suits against one was waging in the computerized battlefield. The three were using the standard RX-79[G] and were laying down a screen of fire at their enemy.

"Where's the rest of his team," Jayden asked one of the spectators. There were four other simulators, so there should've been more fighters. "Taken out already?"

"Nope. He went in by himself. The other four he's already taken out."

Before Jayden could respond there was a flash, followed by an explosion as one of the 79[G]'s went down. Jayden moved through the crowd to get a look at the other screen, and saw who the opponent was.

The mobile suit was braced against the remains of a digital skyscraper, putting a fresh clip into the dober gun mounted on its shoulder. The antique Leo then crouched, and rolled out along the ground, letting a shot from the dober fly as it did so. The round exploded against the shield of the 79[G], which proceeded to drop to a knee. By then the Leo had regained its footing and let loose another shot into the ground between the two grunt Gundams. The explosion sent the still standing suit reeling into the building it was using as cover, while the other weathered the assault behind its shield. As the smoke cleared, the suit, while more black than the white it had been, stood. Rubble collapsed as its partner stood up as well, only to go down in a fiery explosion as a dober round impacted its chest.

The Leo detatched the dober gun and drew a beam saber as it vaulted over the debris, and brought the energy blade down through the machinegun the 79[G] had been using. Fumbling for its own sword, the Leo slipped its saber around the shield and removed the arm at the shoulder, before bringing it back through the top of the chest, just above the reactor. The RX-79[G], missing its head, arm, and top of the cockpit, collapsed in a heap.

The screens went black as the simulation ended. The pilots stood in shock. One of them said, "A Leo took out seven G's? The Frack, man, that's impossible."

The silence was broken as the nearest simulator hatch opened, and it's pilot stepped out. "Tech only helps to a point. Skill makes up the difference." Jayden recognized the man immediately. Gerrard Atmos. Phoenix legend. "Graduation day. Whoever beats me joins the flock." Gerrard looked down at Jayden, then took in the rest of the crowd. "Any of you got the skill?"
