The Death March; A Distant Sadness

The seventeen year old had marched for what seemed like days straight. In the beginning the refugees had trucks, but most of the trucks had been destroyed due to poor care, the environment, or when the raiders attacked. They'd crossed countless borders and Nadia wasn't even sure if she was in Europe anymore. People of all race and creed banded together, it didn't matter where they were from anymore, they all had no home. Women cried, children wailed in sorrow. There were few men among them, mostly children and women. At some point they'd come across slave traders, many of the refugees were sold in exchange for food and much needed medicine. It was a time of chaos. There was no God in this world, hope was a thing of the past. She'd seen it with her own eyes, when the clouds parted and the sky turned red as the heavens fell upon them. They wailed the loss at that time, too. The ones that died were the lucky ones. She knew that now.

Giant machines, Mobile Suits, hulked over the refugees as they marched. Were they even refugees anymore, or were they just prisoners? It became hard to tell. At some point or another the unarmed group of people merged in with another group, and another group, until there were literally thousands of them and they marched at the side of walking giants. The walking giants that Nadia had been so infatuated with when she first lay eyes upon them. Now they were just a symbol of oppression. The sun never shined anymore. The sky was still blocked with the clouds. What was once salvation, became forced relocation. It was a miserable experience, there was little food, and everything was rationed.

Many dropped dead from sickness, exhaustion, or dehydration. The men 'protecting' them refused to let them stop, there was no resting, no time to bury the dead. Many were left behind, some were shot when the men got annoyed, and other times certain civilian refugees were required to provide 'comfort' to the lawless rabble that guided them along this trail. She'd heard speak that they were headed to the Middle East, no doubt to be sold as slaves. But there was talk of alot of things, Nadia had no idea of know what was what. One thing stuck to her mind always, the haunting and almost mournful singing of several of the trails women. The few times that they did make camp, the older women would shelter Nadia, and taught the song to her as well. They sung of sadness, of pain.

Present Day

She awoke to the sound of waves as they crashed against rock, her body stretched out across her rack. It was another night of dreams, this time it felt strange. She'd managed to get her self hooked up with a nice little place near the beach. The sound of the ocean calmed her ever wandering mind, yet at times she felt as if the gravity of this forsaken planet had taken hold of her soul and refused to let it go. Nadia missed that which she had never known, she wanted to go to space, where rumors told that civilizations still existed. But were they anything but rumors? Elle and Nadia had talked extensively on the subject, Elle having worked in a research lab in space and on Earth shortly before she had been turned into a refugee just like Nadia. Elle never did say what it was that she worked on, Mobile Suits probably.

The pink haired woman arose from her bed, throwing on her clothes as she slowly walked toward the small balcony of her apartment. She had a strange headache, as if a strange amount of pressure was being applied to her brain. It hurt in a way she had only experienced once before, her hand raising only to rub at it. Such a strange sensation to experience. In the far distance across the sea, black smoke rose. A battle had occurred recently, the fires from the smoldering remains of what was once a military installation still burned hot. The column of black smoke could be seen for miles and miles away, even as far away as Penguin Island was. For some reason, it made her sad.

The throbbing persisted, the pilot grumbling to her self as she threw on the rest of her clothes. A short bus ride later and Nadia would be at the base. She hadn't seen Elle all night, and she half wondered what had happened to Captain Daniel and the crew of the ship. He might have yelled at her, but he still seemed like he was a nice man. She sighed, so many had come and gone so fast. It hurt. It was probably her fault, really. She didn't do enough, didn't make them happy, didn't make them feel welcome. But alas, there were some who remained. Some she considered her friend, even if she didn't speak often to them.

She was still sad, and confused.

Feelings she didn't understand, sensations that couldn't be explained. It was new to her, like suddenly everything else in the world, no, the universe, had so much more meaning. She couldn't understand it and she had no one to talk to about it. Nadia had heard stories about things that happened to people who were 'different'. Elle was a Coordinator, that was as far as Nadia knew about differing genetics. From what she could gather, you had to be born a Coordinator, so Nadia knew that it had nothing to do with that. The headaches were the worst thing, they would come suddenly and usually without provocation. Medicine didn't really help either, and they would usually go away after a little while. She just had to bear through it.

Elle had disappeared, didn't tell Nadia what for. Nadia cried the first two nights, became withdrawn by the third day, and on the fourth realized that if she spent more time working she spent less time thinking about Elle being gone. The woman called every night, but still the thought of being separated killed her. Elle was very much like an older-sister to Nadia, and had indeed been the only family that Nadia had known for years. Circumstance pushed them together, and together they bared their burden. Nadia couldn't bear the thought of losing someone again. She would do whatever it took to protect the ones she cared about, everyone else be damned.

She could still hear the screams.

Her head throbbed again, it was almost unbearable at that point. Alone in the Hangar Nadia stood beside the Hyaku Shiki, back against it's leg as she clutched her head. The pain didn't go away, it drilled at her, emotions mixing over her. Then it faded, washed away as she could suddenly hear the sound of the waves. Even from this far inland? She knew it was likely just an auditory hallucination. A side effect of some sort, but she could swear she could feel the cool breeze upon her skin, feel the spray of the ocean as it brushed just lightly against her skin. The pressure turned from one of pain, to one of warmth. It enveloped her, this new pressure blocking out the sorrow as her body shifted to the side, seemingly staring through the hangar wall and into the distance. Something was approaching, she couldn't place her finger on how she knew it, but it was just a feeling in her gut. Something new, yet, familiar.

"A distant and familiar sadness calls to us
As if carried on the wind, like burning sand
Brothers and Sisters, away, you endure
Stranded on our own land
A memory etched into soul and skin
Leaves a scar that never heals
Our family is strong, but scattered
Across the stars and fields
We will not abandon you
We will not forget you
We will return for you"

It is said that life is for the living. actions from each living create events, which shape the world. In effect, the mortals which inhabit the world are the true God of it. Hotaru Trie ad thought on that, and she'd come to agree rather readily. It was not God that decided humanity needed to build colonies to space. It was not God that had decided that some people are worth more than others. Humanity had made the sky bleed. It was one of her first memories, she could remember squeezing. Was it her mother? It wasn't her father's hand, that hand had been rough and strong. Hotaru wished she'd been able to hold on tighter. Maybe then she wouldn't have been on this desperate crusade to find this person. It was hard staying awake as she neared the island base in her Mobile Suit, the reports of a pink haired woman piloting a golden weapon was enough to entice her. And after months, she'd finally found her. Whatever evils this pink haired person had committed, it could not be worse than anyone else's evils. Hotaru was brought back in time as she prepared mentally for the meeting, her vision blurring as it always had as she went back to the hallway. The white halls which she was brought back and forth, where everyone passed. 4 doors on the right, two doors on the left. Four doors on the left, three doors on the right... Her name wasn't one of beloved care, it was a title, and a sufficient one to call on a person. Love riddled names were something special, unfortunately it had been far too long since Hotaru could remember the important ones.

The Sinanju would land at the base. Defenses... why had Hotaru forgotten about the defenses? It would be bad if they started shooting. running away and pelting an enemy with her rifle was easy, but trying to flee from mobile dolls... The girl cringed at the thought, deciding to act even more impulsively as the suit touched down. The cockpit would open, as she immediately powered down her lovely weapon, tossing the tether she used to get down and staring to slide to the earth. She looked around concentrating, before her mind would click, completely ignoring any approaching marine's as she sealed the cockpit's hatch and rushed towards the enemy hanger, a small girl in a space pilot suit happily rushing to further her destiny.

The marines stared in confusion when they saw that it was just a child. They weren't about to kill a child, it flew in the face of everything that they believed in as human beings. But some were less trusting then others, their hands holding their rifles tightly, ready to blast the child should it try anything funny. One probably yelled for her to stop, but it was no doubt lost on the young girls ears.

Whether or not they would actually shoot was another matter. The young girl seemed oblivious to them, and inside the hangar Nadia felt as if something was tugging at her. It was a strange feeling, but her headache had passed. The pink-haired woman simply blinked, following the base instinct that seemed to be prodding her along and prompting her to start walking quickly toward the Hangar entrance. The Mobile Dolls didn't know what to do, the powered down Mobile Suit didn't register as a threat and the Taurus' just stood by silently, emotionless.

When Nadia came out the entrance of the hangar and turned to the side, she saw the young girl who was running toward the hangar. A sense of familiarity washed over her again, she squinted first and then her eyes got bigger her hand waving toward the Marines in the distance who lowered their guard. Nadia would take responsibility of this was a trick, but she wasn't about to let them shoot the child before she could find out. Slowly, and timidly, Nadia began to approach the girl, who at that point was running full on toward Nadia rather then the hangar bay.

"Uh..." It was an awkward sort of greeting. She choked on her own words. She couldn't really think of anything to say.

Oblivious was an understatement. Eyes and ears were pointless until she got to the pressure that had built up. While Hotaru was no war hero, or an experienced pilot, her abilities as a newtype were tested daily for a long time. She understood this pull this void that her mind was trying to fill. And it washed over her as she saw the woman, hair as defined as her own, with strange green eyes looking back at her. Hotaru would move at breakneck speed seeing the person completely, as she wore the longing expression across her face. Desperate to test this theory, she would make no effort to respond t the woman's confusion, instead reaching for Nadia's hand, and moving too stand beside, aiming to clutch the hand tightly and confirm what she knew to be true but had no memories to satisfy her need to know.

The girl's eyes would slowly close as she felt comfort in Nadia's presence. Her excited and energetic little body would slouch a bit as it stood next to the older girl, taking in the feeling, the color rushing from the void of space in her mind. The complete feeling she had obtained, ever sense she'd heard of a pink haired woman and a gold mobile suit. For the first time in many years, Hotaru didn't feel alone.

As the young girl clutched her hand memories flashed through her mind. They happened in short bursts, details which had been forced out of her mind from the sheer truama of the experience. It was a miracle they had both survived, after the colonies dropped Nadia had simply assumed the worst and did her best to push those memories away. It was painful, but necessary. Years had passed since that day, and the sun shined brightly now. Questions raced through her mind though none of them managed to reach her lips. She just held onto the girls hand.

They were separated during the hectic scramble when the alarms were first sounded, Nadia had no idea what had happened to her younger sister after that. Nadia was not sure how she knew it was her, but something deep inside of her simply told her that it was infact her. Since her gut seemed to have led her this far, Nadia had no real reason to doubt it. But something had to be said, she couldn't just sit there awkwardly saying nothing for an hour. So, Nadia leaned back slowly, looking down at the girl that had taken hold of her hand "...How did you even find me?" She asked. It was short, sweet, and to the point. Her voice was one of genuine curiosity, her eyebrow arched. She felt a pang of guilt, she'd never searched for her little sister in truth Nadia had figured that the girl had died during the cataclysm.

The girl's eyes brightened with acceptance as she wavered in stance a bit in happiness, feeling the warmth and texture. the hand she'd been holding back then, it was harder... but it was the same hand. Hotaru was certain, smiling widely as she simply pointed to her head, as though that answered the older girl's question in it's entirety. It was true in many ways. She had worked very hard to find and greet this person. But it was more than luck or skill, it was understanding. That is what had brought her to the hanger, and it was following this instinctual understanding that had allowed her to venture at all.

Now that it was confirmed, the girl would release the hand, hugging onto her sister's arm lightly. She did not know what else could be done, her lips opened, there was so much she had too say. But no noise escaped them. It just stayed in place, as she girl looked at Nadia, almost pitifully in the desire to explain her adventures, but something keeping her from letting her voice flow in the least.

Nadia just blinked as the girl pointed to her head "Ah....Surprised you even remember me." Nadia admitted. The girl had been so young at the time that Nadia really was amazed that she had managed to remember Nadia, let alone to the point that she actually devoted her time to finding Nadia again. She truly was a genius child, a fact that made Nadia heave a slight sigh. Her head cocked to the side, feeling the small arms as they wrapped around her. She faced toward the Mobile Suit, arching her eyebrow "...And a pilot already, I see."

She truly was a prodigy.

When Nadia looked down, the girl was staring up at her, her lips were parted and her face seemed like there was something that she wanted to say, but sound refused to come from the girl's mouth. She'd seen it before, on the trail, the mental trauma they experienced was simply too great to process, some of them broke down, snapped, and became psychotic. Others withdrew into their own mind, and some simply lost their voice so to speak.

"....Ahhh...You've lost your voice, haven't you little one?" Nadia simply said to the girl who stared up at her who's voice was unable to escape her lips. Nadia wondered what words and thoughts must have roamed through the girls mind, but Nadia simply smiled and taped her on the nose "Don't worry about it." She reassured the girl, before a frown could even form upon her face.

Hotaru's cheeks flushed a fresh shade of pink, matching her hair as her nose was tapped. The add on of 'Little One' did little to help this process. She was a great deal younger and smaller than Nadia, but still she had hit adolescence, if only the start of it. It was extremely embarrassing to be called a child already, but at the same time it touched Hotaru in some ways immediate acknowledgment of her age and skills wouldn't. It was familiar, after all with their age gap, Nadia ad always been a good deal older than her. A teenager by the time Hotaru was holding her hand, and the sky bled. Her mind flashed back again to that hallway, seeming to become blank too the observer, her breath becoming lighter and shorter. It was only for a moment, but that hallway was always there, just beneath the surface of her mind. It wasn't horrifically traumatic, not the hallway itself, but it had been her life for a 7th of her mortal existence, a very memorable portion of her life. Not that her time there hadn't been useful in the end. She understood somewhat of what she was. Her spatial awareness allowed her to competently pilot the Sinanju, as well as locate Nadia. But she was not as powerful as some of the other pilots. She could not telepathically speak with her sister, as much as she wanted to. She could not shift the embarrassment back at this girl who caused it, and she'd never been trained in the use of funnels, primarily studying a mobile weapon's psychoframe.

As Hotaru's moment in memory halted and she came back to the real world, she would squeeze the arm she was hugging tightly, in an attempted to hide the embarrassment from her sister, looking away as she held onto the much older and wiser pilot. She already knew that this is what she had wanted, Hotaru had spent months trying to figure out just what she would do when she'd met this person, but to this point she couldn't figure it out. Holding on tightly so they wouldn't lose each other to another red sky seemed as sensible as anything.

Odessa watched the heartfelt scene unfold from the comfort of the command center. Ever since the King Cobra had been captured and its crew presumed dead or captured, command of the unit left at Penguin Island had fallen to her and she'd been spending almost as much time filling out administrative work as she did piloting. She watched the two girls hug each other, their glee at being reunited obvious even to an Oldtype.

"What's the situation down there?" she asked the marine command.

"Well, that red mobile suit flew in here and just surrendered itself to us," the marine replied. "Didn't say a word to anybody and didn't transmit any landing clearance so we've been keeping an eye on her for tricks."

"Have the doll squad stand down," she ordered. "But keep an eye on them until I get down there."

"Ma'am, I'd advise you to stay up there."

"Noted," Odessa said, putting on an officer's cap she found stylish but whose origin she didn't know. "But I don't think I'm gonna get a cavity no matter how sweet things are. That being said, be ready in case she is up to something."

Watching from the nearby hangar bay was another pilot, Zoey. She watched the scene unfold before her. Obvious was that fact these two knew each other and had a deep connection to one another. Such a scene with benefit of a back story could make for a great tear jerking novel or movie perhaps. However, Zoey didn’t feel anything. Growing up on the streets she learned certain emotions were detriment to survival. The kind a normal person would be experiencing at a time like this. All Zoey could think of was how she killed the only person she could possible share such a connection with. With a heavy sigh she walked out to join the two in order to find out what was going on.

You caused quite the scene little girl,” Zoey said loudly enough for the two girls to hear over the surrounding noise. The mobile dolls were backing off as were the marines to a lesser extent. “Nadia, you should let Odessa know the situation before continuing this.” Zoey paused as she reached the two and looked down briefly at the new comer before looking at Nadia. “Perhaps going inside would be better and away from the attention of others…?

Nadia just scratched her head. The girl was hugging tightly to her arm and the reality of the situation had suddenly come back to her as her head looked from side to side at the Mobile Dolls and at the Marines who looked slightly puzzled. Some of them had stood down, and others still looked as if they were ready to shoot the little girl. This caused the mobile suit pilot to make a little noise, her arm that wasn't being clung to had fallen instinctively to her side where the side arm was. Instinct kicked in over anything else as she shifted the younger girl to a less vulnerable position, pushing her slightly behind Nadia.

When Zoey had approached the pink-haired woman just blinked and turned to the side. She couldn't help but give a little chuckle "Ah..Hah...Truthfully this is just as much of a surprise to me as anyone else..." Nadia admitted, blinking for a minute as her one arm attempted to wiggle free the grip of her younger sister. The girl in response seemed to growl and glare up at Nadia, though still didn't say a word. In a way, it reminded Nadia of a puppy and the way they acted if you tried to take something away from them.

Nadia Sighed

"Yeah maybe that would be for the best..." But with the girl clinging onto her arm, Nadia found her self rather incapable of really moving anywhere.

Hotaru blinked as she was shifted off to the side, clutching to Nadia's arm even more tightly when she tried to break free. It was an unconscious decision, as much as the glaring that accompanied it. But people were approaching now as she had been moved. Finally slacking and releasing the arm she'd been attached to, a defensive glare took to the girl's face, the hands now groping and wringing with Nadia's fingers, unwilling to completely sever the connection. As the woman spoke, someone confrontational too the meeting sisters, Hotaru's mood would not be improved in the least, arcing a lower leg back with her knee to kick a small stone left on the ground from the many constructions and mobile suits and other debris common in such warring times. The small stone would fly, aiming to strike into Zoey's leg and succeed in the warning of not to interfere.

Zoey could see that she had upset the little girl. So much that she retaliated by kicking a rock at her leg. The rock struck Zoey in the leg like the little girl had intended but to her dismay it had no apparent effect on Zoey. Inside however the blow had recalled a past memory. Zoey remembered doing something similar once but she was beaten severally for it. Because of that Zoey showed restraint.

The marines are looking restless.” Zoey said as she looked down at the little girl. “Best not give them an excuse to fire.” With her left arm extended Zoey pointed to the group of Marines close by. They had tightened their grip on the weapons in their hands, alerted when the little girl kicked the rock at Zoey. “I’ll join you two later, Hyperion won’t fix itself.” Zoey backed away and then turned towards the hangar bay.

Odessa's jeep pulled up just in time to see the newcomer kicking a rock at Zoey. Zoey seemed to take it well enough, so Odessa wasn't about to make a scene with Nadia and her...friend? Companion? Whatever. She adjusted her official-looking sunglasses as she stepped out of the jeep and strode toward the two girls, nodding to the marines as she did. She'd get a more thorough report on this incident from Zoey, the marines, and anyone important who was present for this event. Despite the stress of her new, elevated position, she managed to keep a friendly tone in her voice when she got close enough to speak.

"We're not going to be making a habit out of kicking rocks, are we?" Odessa asked. Without waiting for a response, Odessa started talking again. "Nadia, would you care to introduce me to your little friend over a cup of tea in the base? Everyone out here seems to be a little on edge for some reason."

The marines clutched their weapons and Nadia did the same, her hand had reached the grip of her pistol before she had even considered what she was doing. The words of Zoey were lost to her as her mind drifted to another place in time. Memories flashed through her mind and otherwise occupied her thoughts. One arm had wrapped about the body of the younger girl, pulling her in even tighter behind the pink haired woman.

~

"Again!" A man shouted somewhere in an unknown land, the children and teenagers lunging forward, each of them attempting to disarm a much older target. Just like before, the children were easily cast aside. Nadia included, her body being easily flung to the ground as she let out a rather loud umpf.

"AGAIN!" The man roared furiously, the young onces once again lunged forward. In a past life, the man had been a pilot during the war and had been apart of some special forces group or another. His uniform's sleeves had been ripped off and scars littered his tanned body which he displayed proudly. He was a mountain of a man, and all rank and insignia had been torn from that old Uniform he wore so proudly.

Once more, the children rushed forward, only to be tossed away again. It was basic self-defense. One would thin a civilian would have no such need for a thing, but as refugee life had proven to Nadia, she would never be safe in this world if she didn't learn how to at least defend her self. There was no such thing as a civilian anymore, not in this world.

Her memories flashed again. She was never good at at the hand-to-hand combat stuff, but she was a crack shot. The instructors were impressed with her for it, she'd need only look at the enemy once before she would commit their position to memory. It was one look, but it was a good enough look. She would come up shooting next, discharging a round into each of the targets. While not as effective against moving targets, it gave the woman incredible first strike capability.

~

Five men, each roughly five eleven. If she moved fast enough she could take three of them out, she'd take a shot to her left leg and torso but the younger girl would remain free of danger. She'd kill the remaining two in the return fire. Her thought process was instinctual. She wouldn't let anyone touch a hair on that little girl's head. She wouldn't lose her, not again. Her grip tightened, eyes narrowed.

"Nadia, would you care to introduce me to your little friend over a cup of tea in the base? Everyone out here seems to be a little on edge for some reason."

She blinked. Her body relaxed at the familiar voice and her hand pulled away from the pistol, causing Nadia to give a small giggle as she pulled Hotaru rather forcefully to her. Nadia wasn't going to let go. Not at that moment, anyways. Just moments ago the older woman had been overwhelmed by instinct but when Odessa spoke she relaxed. It was a familiar voice, at least. Calm radiated through her body.

"Mm. Yeah...That might be best...." Nadia responded, still weary of the Marines. The loyalty of men was a fickle thing. They could never be trusted. She had trusted similar men, once, and found that they would just as soon turn upon the people that they were sworn to defend as they would kill an enemy.
