The Great Debate

Malcolm stood rigidly as the new personage walked onto the podium, accepting the helm from the pale-faced debater. Malcolm, too was shocked at the sudden appearance of the new debater. Shocked, and disappointed. The new debater could erase all the progress he had made against the earlier debater, by disowning the statements that the representative had made, and passing all of it off as a test, or some kind of joke. He was disgusted, he decided. The newcomer had turned most of the debate into mere entertainment. Most of the media would just focus on the fact that one of the debaters had been replaced by a Char look-alike, ignoring the ideas that had been exchanged, ignoring his ideas.

It wasn't acceptable; it wasn't fair. He'd spent so much time preparing for this debate, ready to meet hatred with reason, personal attacks with appeals to the audience to think for themselves - too much time to be upstaged by some theatrical sensationalism. He would have won - by a landslide. It took all his willpower to keep his hands from shaking in rage and frustration, to keep his face respectfully blank, with a welcoming half-smile. This time, he did glance at Everie, who sat, frowning in the front row. She met his gaze with an encouraging smile. For a moment, he wished they were Newtypes, and could share thoughts across a distance, without needing speech to carry them.

For just a moment, he basked in the shared glance with Everie. It seemed like a lifetime. For that moment, he thought about all he done in pursuit of his cause - all the time he'd sacrificed, the long nights he'd spent thinking, the time spent making sure his training in the mobile suit would be enough to keep him and his ideas safe. Was any of it worth it? If individuals like this Char were just going to upstage his intellectual arguments with sensationalism, just as he'd done at the Newtype Conference, could he really accomplish anything? Would the public hear?

Yes, he forced himself to decide. He could not give up - not now, especially, with so much on the line. The moment passed, and returned his mind to the debate at hand, and to his opponents' words. He no longer fought to keep his hands from shaking, and the half-smile on his face was no longer tight-lipped, but natural. He knew what he had to say - what he had to do - he had decided. He forced his eyes away from Everie, somehow strengthened, and began, addressing the recent arrival:

"Ideas cannot be propagated by force, but they must be defended. My vision is a world of peace and understanding, but readily admit that the road to that world will be paved with conflict. I cannot condemn a man who defends his family or hometown with force of arms. I have defended myself, my friends and my ideas with similar principles. I do not argue pacificism or martyrdom, but for an attempt at understanding. For my ideas to work, men must understand one another, recognize and respect each others' humanity, and stop making petty divisions according to a man's genetics.

"Men will defend what they hold dear to them. What I ask is not for men to submit to powerful evil, but to seek understanding, rather than conflict. And if they find that they have been tossed into conflict, and must defend themselves or their families, who can fault their use of force to defend them? In any case, however, the end result is still saddening. We cannot rejoice in or pursue the death of our fellow men, no matter how militant or misguided they are.

"My heart goes out to those killed in the attack in South America. It is my belief that the men who assaulted the base felt that the ideas we have heard from your representative," Here, Malcolm motioned to the stunned man who still stood on the stage. "threatened them. I do not excuse them, and I certainly do not condone their actions; I only seek to further our understanding. The age of mercenaries must end, I agree, but we cannot end this age ourselves, with military might; only humanity as a whole can end it. Military action will simply create more death, creating two factions where once there were many. But if we can spread understanding, these militant groups will disband of their own accord, for their services will cease to be required.

"But can such a society defend itself? I answer with a resounding 'yes.' Say a few men decide they wish to take advantage of a peaceful society, using violence to attain their own selfish goals. Will society stand for it? Will they turn a blind eye? I do not think so. Now, it is important to realize that we are not in such a society yet, and will not be, for a long time, but military action, and peace held by military power, cannot last. A society bound together by those in power, and not by commonality of ideals, will only remain together as long as those in power can remain powerful; society itself will not change.

"And that is why I call on everyone, Naturals, Newtypes and Coordinators alike, to look past the artificial splits that we have impressed upon the world, upon our fellow human beings. We cannot be pulled forward by a group of men; we must move forward together. You have asked me to help you bring order to this 'blue and pure world,' but I must decline. I do not wish to bring order to the world, but understanding. The world is not pure, and cannot be purged in order to make it so. Rather, it must be refined. We have the raw material capable to accomplish it; humanity is capable of great things - terrible and wonderful things. We simply need direction. Men will not be forced to do something, but when they make up their minds about it - only then, are they truly powerful.

"We hate genocide and injustice, and desire peace, but we disagree on the methods of bringing that peace about. You believe that we can change society from the outside in, but I say that change must occur from the inside out!" Malcolm paused to let his words sink in, breathing slowly, then began his final point, his sensational news piece, "For my cause, I have chosen remain without connection: to Orb, to ZAFT, or any other organization with a military presence. But, I also used my resources to purchase a mobile suit in defense of my ideas, and joined a group of like-minded men. I thought it a practical idea, to ensure my ideas would spread, but now realize that the difference between joining Orb and in joining a group of military men was only a difference in degrees, not in nature

"If I am to speak of defending ideas, and of changing society, I must strive to be a part of that society, sharing in their concerns. The average man cannot afford a mobile suit to defend his ideas, and I should not require of others what I do not require of myself. Today, I relinquish all means of defending myself, physically. My mobile suit will be sold and the proceeds will go toward the reconstruction of areas damaged by the war between ZAFT and the Earth Alliance.

"My ideals are not lofty, but within our reach! If humanity can adopt a spirit of cooperation and understanding, together, we can halt injustice and make our world - not just the earth - a better place. I will not hide behind a mobile suit or any other military weapon; I will speak for the marginalized and those who have suffered injustice, but I will let my ideas speak for themselves."

Malcolm looked at Everie, who was still frowning. He had not discussed this with her, or with anyone else. He would speak to her later. Now, he waited for the closing statement from his opponent, at peace with his decision, his ideas, and himself.

"Bravo, Mr. Kepler. I can do no more than adamantly praise and honor your heartfelt understanding. Truly, it stirs the soul to see someone so courageous as to take off their metaphorical body armor of a mobile suit and stand before the world, mindful of all the dangers it contains and declaring themselves unafraid of the mercenaries that hide within the shadows! To this, I must yield to you this debate and extend to you my service.

So long as you dare to resist the ways of genocide, mercenaryism, and anarchy - I am your humble sword. For you have cast down your arms, and I must be there to take them up. There must never be another Jaburo, and I will make certain of that. I hereby declare that all mobile suits must swear themselves to the defense of mother earth! The age of mercenaryism is over - and I will not rest until every mobile suit on earth is under the command of an enlightened sovereign! I would ask that Mr. Kepler be that man, but in the absence of his voluntariness, I must take the responsibility of that mission onto myself!

We must now move forward into a new age! In honor of the dead, and all those who have died, we must start the disarmament of mobile suits from anarchistic warlords, and form a Reborn Earth Movement! You have opened my eyes, Mr. Kepler, and now I can see. Coordinators, Newtypes, Naturals! We must come together, lest we be wiped out! Sieg the philosophy of Zeon Zum Deikun, Sieg the philosophy of his son, Casval Deikun, and Sieg the voice of a new age! Malcolm Kepler! Sieg Kepler! Sieg Kepler!"

A chant arose from the audience, hailing the man as a hero. The winner of the debate was unanimous; Charlie had yielded to his opponent, and more than that, declared himself his humble body guard. Everything had proceeded as Charlie had planned.

Malcolm thought he had finished his closing statement, but the blatant manipulation from the newcomer merited - nay! necessitated - a quick return. He spoke over the scattered chanting from the small crowd present at the debate in person, as per the agreement between the debaters. There were not more than 50 people in the room, and it was not particularly difficult.

"I am afraid that you have misunderstood me. You must not take up arms to spread ideas. It does not matter whether the ideas are yours or mine; if you try to push them on others by force, they will be rejected by most, accepted by a few who do not understand them, and in the end, almost certainly cheapened. I cannot accept your offer to take up arms in defense of your interpretation of my ideals; I cannot accept the endorsement of Blue Zeon or its leader, as honorable as his intentions might be.

"You are trying to force others - men of diverse aims and backgrounds, some honorable and most selfish - to give up their arms and follow your ideals. Do you think they will do so willingly, or all at once? I think it will be more difficult than you might imagine. Men will not trade their weapons for your ideals so easily, especially when you ask with your own weapons in hand. They will see the power of your weapons, not your words, and there will be physical conflict, not mental. Any change you manage to enforce will be merely external.

"I have said it many times before, and I say it again: You cannot force society to change; the people in society must decide to change themselves. It will not be a quick transformation; it cannot be. We are not surgically removing a cancer; we are transforming a body, and such a drastic change requires time, and great effort on the part of everyone in the body. The change you will bring about, if you can manage it, will be superficial and temporary, and brought about by trauma, not transformation.

"No, I cannot support you or Blue Zeon, nor even accept your praise. Even if we share some ideas in common, we understand them quite differently." The floor was once again quiet. Everie was listening attentively; the frown had disappeared, replaced by the thoughtful expression so familiar to Malcolm. He was pleased; if Everie was thinking, he was expounding his ideas well.

Charlie visibly frowned. This was not to plan. The violation in his pre-programmed order of operations caused anger to swell up in him.

"Am I to understand, Mr. Kepler, that I, who so willingly humble myself before you, and offer you my services, and those who follow me in the promise of a better tomorrow - are to be left out of your utopian movement! My sword is yours, if I must cast it down, I shall!" Charlie said, taking his sword and stabbing it into the ground.

"But tell me, Mr. Kepler. Who then on this earth is superior enough to take on your mission to rid the world of mercenaries and militaries? How will understanding be enforced upon countries who have battled each other since the close of the war? How, Mr. Kepler, will the world of anarchy end when our greatest hope for unity and understanding refuses to take control of the reigns of power and guide us into a better future! Tell me, when my sword falls and another one comes to strike at you - how will you defend?!"

He knelt now, burning with hatred at his very circuits, but committed to the way forward he had decided. He calmed.

"How is an old soldier supposed to yield his children to war? Tell me what to do, Mr. Kepler."

"I have answered your questions already, but I will do so again, in the interest of clarity. No man or group of men can enforce understanding on others. It does not matter how pure their motives are, or how clever their reasoning. Understanding can only happen when an individual thinks things through with the power of his own mind.

"My intention is, and always has been, to show that Coordinators ought to be treated with the same dignity and respect accorded to other human beings. To help illustrate my point, I have examined the nature of what it means to be human, and have shown that Coordinators are essentially the same as Naturals or Newtypes; our humanity is largely determined by our ambitions, abilities and aspirations - by what we choose to do with what we have been given, not small variations in our genetic. Humans of all genetic types have made horrible mistakes, but responsibility for these mistakes is not shared solely by humans of one genetic type, but by all of us. Finally, I have called on the example of Orb, to inspire you with ideas of what humanity might be able to accomplish if it were able to set aside their differences.

"Utopia is not something I can claim for my goal; it is too lofty for me. I touched on it briefly in our argument, it is true, but I cannot say that I have a map that will lead humanity there. Understanding and cooperation are merely a few of the paving stones on the road to a bright future for humanity; they are not a blueprint. I do not know how to create a perfect, universal society, and have not met or read anyone who does. But I do know this: Any utopia that mankind must be driven into is no utopia at all.

"My honorable opponent has admitted that Newtypes, Coordinators and Naturals can and should work together. He claims that he understands me, and I hope that he is right. To be honest, this abrupt about-face from my opponent has surprised me, as I'm sure it has all of you. It is my sincere hope that Blue Zeon lives up to its leader's expectations of upholding the ideal of justice, standing against genocide, and restoring the beauty of the earth. Calling for an end to private military companies is a noble goal, but also quite complex. Military power can be used to protect and defend what is right and true just as effectively as it can be used to enforce, oppress and attack. Let us hope that he does not turn from his new understanding as abruptly as he has found it.

"I would not like to stray too far from the topic at hand; we have over-stepped the intended scope of our discussion to chase after ideas that will take lifetimes to flesh out, and more to implement. I, for one, will be happy if we can come to an agreement concerning the humanity of Coordinators. If we can do this, we can lay an important stone in the path to humanity's future.

"Now, I believe that we have finished addressing each others' queries, and are now available to answer a few questions from those in attendance." He looked questioningly at his opponent, looking for a nod of approval, or some other sign. He was unsure as to how to address the man.

Charlie nodded, returned to his podium and waited for questions.

"Truly, perhaps I have over extended myself in pursuing good or foiling evil. Since we are done inquiring each other, I yield the ground to questions. To the audience, to any that lie within this room right now, stand up and ask whoever you wish whatever your heart's desire! Now now, don't be shy, stand!"

Zelpher made himself scarce once that bell was rung, as he was heading for the door he got Alec's attention and shook his camera and motioned for him to call him later, his old friend nodded and continued to write before trying to get his questions answered. As Zelpher walked out of the building his phone rang and saw it was Alec. He quickly picked up, "Sorry my good sir, I had to get out before the run of the bulls." An old joke between the two of them and heard a slight laugh, "No worries, but I'd like some of the photos and at least my camera back." Xeis looks at the camera and thought for a moment, "How bout after your done we'll grab a drink on the mainland. By then I should at least have the photos ready for both of us." He heard Alec get shoved for a moment and also heard him call the guy a few choice words. "Alright buddy, we'll meet at that pub where that chick with the fiery hot tattoo works. "Zelpher just laughed and agreed. With that they said their farewells and he started in the direction of the ferry flight.

Alec after he got of the phone wrote a few more scribbles notes before he put his notepad in his breast pocket and took out a recorder for this section of the debate. He began his usual tactics to gain the needed attention of the debaters.

Once Charlie saw Alec and pointed to him the crowd quickly became silent and listened. "Good day gentelmen, I have two questions. First is to Charlie Alpha. Mr. Alpha are you going to follow the ways of the pen or the sword in this matter? And by that I mean, are you and Blue Zeon going to adopt Mr. Kelper ideals or stay with Blue Zeon's objective? And to Malcom Kelper. Mr Kelper you just stated that you are going to sell your suit and give the proceeds to the restoration to Earth, yet how will you as a man defend your friends, loved one, or homeland for that matter from aggressors that are equipped with a mobile suit?"

"Am I going to follow the ways of the pen or the sword in this matter? Will Blue Zeon adopt Mr. Kelper's ideals or stay with its primary objective? An excellent question, I thank you good sir to have such foresight to clarify the way forward. I believe in order to win the war on mercenaryism, both the pen and sword must strike at once in unison. We must declare with our words, and fight with our swords, that there must never be another massacre. We must put our lives on the line no only in battle, but in public forums such as this. As a soldier, it is my job to keep my sword trained, and my pen at the ready.

As for the way forward, the organization of Blue Zeon now only consists of the two men standing on this stage. Due to the backlash coming from coordinator-friendly mercenaries, my soldiers were massacred at Jaburo, defending a newtype colony that some person must have thought 'unhelpful' to their business plans. But I say to you, Blue Zeon will not dissipate - it must evolve! It must open to all races - for just as there is the danger of ZAFT saboteurs murdering newtypes in the night, I now recognize the danger of mercenary newtypes murdering coordinators. I will say again, I was blind but now I see. The races of the world must come together in a united military force for the cause of peace, honor, and justice. I see this as an evolution of the philosophies I argued for in my movement, adapted to the dangers that the world seeks today."

"How will I defend that which is important to me? I will defend it the same way that I have for the last 20 years: With my ideas. A mobile suit can defend against bullets and beams, but only to an extent; if your enemy overwhelms you, whether by skill or by numbers, you have failed to defend. But, if you reach an understanding with your enemy, it does not matter how many mobile suits you have, or he has, for you will not be using them to exchange your ideas.

"Practically, this is how things might play out, were I to keep my mobile suit. At first, those interested in quieting my ideas might come at me with a mobile suit or two, confident they can extinguish me and my ideas. But, if I defend against them, whether I kill them or not, the next attack will be stronger. Say, then, that I seek refuge with like-minded men, seeking further protection. Will not my enemies do the same?

"Perhaps, though, I rise to a position of power, commanding hordes of mobile suits. Have I attained my objective then? I say no, for I cannot effectively spread my ideas from such a position of power; it would be seen as tyranny and oppression. Then, there are practical concerns like: What if I come out of my mobile suit to give a speech? Will I sleep in my mobile suit? Will I spend my entire life speaking in high-security locations? No. I have come to the conclusion that there is little safety in owning just one mobile suit, and it is more dangerous - to me, to those I associate with, and to humanity at large - in seeking the company of other mobile suits.

"I will let the justness and rightness of my ideas defend me, and I will do my best to protect that which I love; my goal is that they will far outlive me, not the other way around."

Standing to the side he took in the interaction and grinned as the guy he knew was the one talking. And listening to them made him realize that this was the most useless thing he had ever seen. And just as he was about to speak up his phone vibrated with a message. Pulling it out of his pocket the net opened up revealing a hit on his job request. Looking at these guys and then at the phone he knew this wasn't where he wanted to be.

The message wanted him to head east and meet up with some people. That was easy and it would lead him down to the hangar area where some mechanics were still working on the Astraea. "Hey how much longer till your done?" He asked watching as they re-attached the last armor plating to the shoulder.

Mechanic- "Well all thats left is internal wiring and re-adjusting the..."

Cutting the guy short Kyle grabbed the wire and was carried up to the cockpit hatch. "I'm gonna finish the rest myself. I need to get moving so thanks for the work and call me if you ever need anything." Quickly waving the men off the machine a few switches were thrown an the GN drive began to start up. That was a good sign and it meant his main form of propulsion was a go. So turning the machine towards the exit the Astraea moved out of the Giga Float and headed east towards his new job.

Jaiden sat in the cockpit of the N Dagger N Kai eating the General Tso Chicken and Fried Rice. He paid attention to the debate as well as the area around, scanning for possible mobile suit intruders while his Mirage Colloid kept him from being seen. He kept in contact with the Teletha, who was scanning the seas around the man made island, and Naomi, who watched the people who attended the debate along with Surge. So far, so good. Nobody had made a suspicious move.

Jaiden allowed himself to relax a little more as the debate went on, but sat straight up in his seat as the newcomer took the stage. This guy, claiming to be the real Charlie Alpha, took over for obviously fluster soldier. Jaiden shook his head in disgust.

"Who sends a soldier of his to handle a challenge that HE started?" asked Jaiden angrily.

"It's just another blowhard." responded Naomi

"Oh well. I guess better late than never." mused Jaiden, "Enki, I'm headed back to the Teletha. All the mobile suits in the area are docked and nobody is showing signs of aggression. I'm almost out of power on my Colloid."

After Enki acknowledged his comm, The N Dagger N quickly and silently made its way to the docks and descreetly boarded the Teletha from underwater.

Arnie raised his hand before speaking, his did his best to mask his annoyance at this charade but, he would do his duty and try to at least get an answer for this trickery.

"Charlie Alpha" He began as he stood up. "First you appeared as a hologram unwilling to show your face then when challenged to a debate you send a soldier in your stead, now you appear before us wearing the visage of a man long dead each time giving a different message to your listeners, how is it that the people of earth can trust a man, or a group, that shows such subterfuge at so many public appearances changing their beliefs each time. Such as at the Newtype conference in south America, you voiced great hate for coordinators saying that "Newtypes were a holy blessing from the stars, while Coordinators are a hellish invention of the underworld! Not only are we not allies - we are enemies! Newtypes must instead form ranks with their natural brethren and form ranks against these hellish contraptions! " all the while claiming to be a man who would be hundreds of years old." finishing his rather unprofessional question, Arnie did his best not to glare at the man that was so surely psychotic.

"Whether I am a man, an image, or even just a voice in the dark, I am here to inspire the population of earth to come together and fight against anarchy. This soldier is the last remaining survivor of Blue Zeon, I thought it only fitting that he speak to the same coordinators who murdered his comrades. As for my long lifespan, that I cannot deny is something I'm sure is on many minds. I was frozen, sent to Axis for safe keeping, then to the ruins of Granada until I returned to Earth thus. I'm afraid it was very difficult to find passage here, due to the pirate problem.

Which only underlines the greater problem on Earth. It is not correct nor tolerable that mobile suits roam the lands like the ronin samurai of the 16th century. They must be called to fight for the defense of our mother earth - mercenaryism must end. A new military must come, and I am here to guide it in the absence of leadership. For victory, and the ideals of Zeon Zum Deikun, the earth must be reborn!"

"If your ridiculous story is to believed what of coordinators, what of you past word advocating their exile and destruction." Arnie snapped. "You claim also that those that lived on a mercenary base where slaughtered is it not murder you seek to empower by ending mercenaries? do you wish to take away the power of those around you so you can rule them, again I say, your words have said conflicting goals which is to be trusted..which are your true goals?"

Enki shoot his head, he knew it was too late for this. This man had covered his tracks betrayal and deceit were his bedfellows, this "Char" would only reveal his true colors when there were none left to oppose him. Until then, he would ruthlessly murder any who opposed him. Enki knew what had to be done, but now was not the time.

"I have answered this in the debate, journalist. Exile and destruction is the only end for those that turn their arms and armors against their brothers and sisters. They did not live on a mercenary base, they lived on a colony. They asked for my protection, and I gave it to them. I can only honor them in quiet silence, until their murderers are brought to justice.

If anyone, including you, has information on the ones responsible, I call them to offer themselves to my authority - so that together, we can make this world peaceful again. I have no love or want for power, and it is with great reluctance that I take upon myself the burden of leadership. If you believe there is someone better suited to protect this earth, stand forward and announce them."
