The Crossbone Series

Posted Image

This thread is a crash course on the three Crossbone units, for writers who need to know what all their crazily named weapons do. It is split into five sections - Systems, Defenses, Close Range Weapons, Medium Range Weapons and Long Range Weapons. There will be both a written description and pictures.

Systems

Core Fighter
The Crossbone Series uses a Core Block system. The X-Fighter has a pair of beam guns, and is compatible with the booster rocket. Any X-Fighter can be used to pilot all three Crossbone Gundams in case of emergency.

Targeting Sensor
Much like the Victory Gundam and GM Sniper II, the Crossbone Series has a special camera designed for hitting precision targets at medium and long range. It slides into place over the right eye when used, and is only used for ranged fire support.

Bio Computer
Unfortunately, there is no good single image to show how this works from the show. Essentially, it acts as a reverse psycommu. While a Psycommu system allows a newtype to send data to the mobile suit, piloting it with their thoughts, the Bio Computer allows the mobile suit to send data directly to the pilots brain. You do not have to be a newtype to use this system, although newtypes have an easier time processing the data. It is similar to a ZERO system, except that it doesn't calculate combat probability odds and work tactics for the pilot, it simply sends them sensor and mechanical data. This makes up for the lack of a panoramic cockpit in the X series, removes a pilots natural blind spots since they can see the image of a rear view camera without looking at it physically, and generally improves a pilots accuracy and coordination.

Booster Rocket | Image 2
This rocket attaches to the Gundam or the fighters binders, and can be used either to exit the atmosphere, or to fight in a heavy gravity environment, such as low Jupiter orbit. It can also be used in a deep space battle for additional thrust and fuel.

Re-Entry System
Crossbone units can use their beam shield to drop from orbit safely, or use a combination of the beam shield and booster rocket to exit orbit.

Magnetic Storage Racks
Crossbone units are so festooned with weaponry and systems, that they have fewer storage racks than most MS, with only a single rack on either hip. However, this is enough to carry the Zanbuster and one other weapon, which is all they need in any case.

Defenses

Dummy Launcher
Like most 2nd Universal Century mobile suits, each Crossbone Unit has a number of dummy balloon launchers in-between its fingers. These expand upon release and create a balloon shaped just like the enemy unit. This will confuse enemy sensors and, hopefully, the pilot as well. This is only usable in space, since it requires a vacuum to expand the balloon.

Beam Mantle
The Beam Mantle is a cape made of special beam-resistant fibres. It can withstand about five shots from a conventional beam rifle, or one shot from a high powered cannon, VSBR or a battleship gun. Special clasps on the Crossbones shoulders prevent it from inhibiting unit maneuverability.

Beam Shield / Brand Marker
The Crossbones Beam Shield can be used both for attack or defense. In its defensive setting, it creates a large diamond shaped shield that can cover the entire mobile suit when maneuvering vertically. In its offensive setting, it creates a beam spike that can be maneuvered for punching attacks. The beam shield generator itself is optionally affixed to the units forearm, and can be jetissoned or thrown. If CBX-3 uses the beam shields, they latch on over the I-fields heat dissipation unit, making the I-field unusable until the beam shield is detached.

I-Field | Image2 | Image 3 | Image 4
Unique to CBX-3, it has one I-field in each hand. Each covers a half-sphere around the mobile suit, meaning both need to be used at once to create a complete sphere of coverage. Each I-field can only be used for 45 seconds before overheating and needing to cool down for about a minute. Because the field is projected from the units palm, it is unusable while carrying a weapon, and because the heat-dissipation system is also in the forearm, it is unusable while using the beam shield. However, because it is form-fitting around the units palm and then expands outwards, CBX-3 can use it to grab a beam saber in its hand.

Just in case you didn't know, an I-field deflects any and all beam weaponry.

Close Range Weaponry

Vulcans | Image 2
Like most Federation mobile suits, the Crossbone units have vulcans, usable for shooting down missiles or damaging poorly armored enemies. The Crossbone units also pack a pair of larger bore machinecannons in their shoulders for added punch, and CBX-3 has a second pair of machinecannons in its chest. These weapons are used together for suppressive fire and defeating weaker enemies, but would do little to Phase-Shift, Gundanium or GN Infused armor.

Beam Sabers
Although they are not the Crossbones primary close range weapons system, they do carry a pair of standard beam sabers in their shoulders as back up weapons.

Heat Knives | Image 2 | Image 3
Each Crossbone unit carries a pair of knives in their legs. These are superheated by the units leg thruster exhaust, and can be used in a number of ways. They can be retrieved from the rear of the units calves, or extended from beneath the units foot when kicking. In an emergency, the knife can also be shot out of the foot as a projectile weapon.

Scissor Anchors | Image 2 | Image 3
The Scissor Anchors act like grappling hooks, usable for several different purposes. They can latch onto an enemy mobile suit, a motorized winch preventing it from leaving close combat. They can also be used to retrieve weapons, or to affix a damaged unit to a ship.

Beam Zanber | Image 2 | Image 3
The Crossbones primary melee weapon, the Beam Zanber is a large beam sword, designed with the same technology as F91's VSBRs. This means that it can cut through enemy beam sabers and beam shields. Beam Zanbers can block each other just like conventional beam sabers.

Shot Lancer
The Shot Lancer is a close combat weapon designed for destroying mobile suits inside of space colonies without accidentally setting off a reactor explosion. It is essentially a spinning metal lance, with a 4-barrel machinegun inside it. The lance can be fired as a projectile in an emergency. The Shot Lancer is only used by Crossbone X-2.

Screw Whip | Image 2
The Screw Whip is a specialized close combat weapon, designed for fighting against other close combat mobile suits, that may have a superior reach to the Crossbone units, such as Epyon or Shenlong or Dragon. It is a long metal whip with a drill bit on the end of it. The Screw Whips are only used by Crossbone X-1

Muramasa Blaster | Image 2 | Image 3
The Muramasa Blaster is a multi-range weapon with a variety of functions. It can be used as a high powered beam rifle (there is no good image of this in the manga, but it is obvious from video games and the lineart), or as a ridiculously large beam saber. As a beam saber, it has two settings. The first protrudes a number of beams from all sides of the blaster like spikes, the second protrudes a single, very long beam saber from the tip. The Muramasa Blaster is more powerful than the Beam Zanber/Zanbuster, but its power source can only operate for a limited time. Once its power is depleted, the physical blade is still strong enough to be used as an improvised melee weapon. The Muramasa Blaster is only used by Crossbone X-3.

Medium Range Weaponry

Buster Gun
The Buster Gun is more or less a beam pistol, and nothing to brag about. However, it and the Beam Zanber can be combined to make the Zanbuster rifle. It is powered by an external magazine in the pistol grip.

Zanbuster | Image 2
The Buster Gun and Beam Zanber are combined to create the Zanbuster, which is more or less a standard beam rifle. It is used in conjunction with the targeting sensor for ranged combat, but is not especially impressive. It can also be used to fire a seperately stored grenade, for piercing I-fields or doing collateral damage to enemy bases and ships.

Long Range Weaponry

Buster Launcher
The Buster Launcher is a large, two handed, artillery beam rifle, used in conjunction with the targeting sensor. It is used for long range fire support in missions where close combat is impossible or unnecessary. It is only used by Crossbone X1 and Crossbone X2.
