The year is 1285. Four and a half years have passed since the end of the War of the Mask, and the fall of the greater demon Vorgoth the Corrupter into anguish. Though the world as you knew it was saved from the machinations of the Corrupter, Exania is still a violent, unstable world. Much has changed since the Lords of the North took up their baronies, dukedoms, and Queenship in the Kingdom of New Haddrin. Your homeland is a very different place than what you remember from before the war. In 1281, just as was agreed during the waning days of the War, the Kingdom of Haddrin and the Barbarian Heartland merged into one nation, dubbed New Haddrin in honor of the reunification of the divided nation. Later that same year, the first son of King Cairn and Queen Lyrith was born, and promised to the daughter of the former Queen Marona and her husband, Zale. Later that same year, the new Lord of Azuria announced the end of the Mountain Dwarves' relations with the outside world in response to Lord Woden's death. The mountains of Azuria sealed their doors to the outside world in fall, and that is the last heard from the dwarves. Across Exania, in late 1282, the Congress of Western Elves plunged into civil war. With no clear right or wrong between the many warring houses, the rest of the world sat back and watched. Now, House Averthran has seized power and reshaped the Western Elves into a unified kingdom. King Daiadaen now reigns as sovereign ruler of the elves. The following spring brought ruin to their southern cousins, however. The mortal Southron Islanders suffered a brutal typhoon that submerged most of their many islands. Their people have since fled to the mainland, finding refuge in Vaen, Averthran, and Haddrin. However, may nations have become tired of their new wards, and the southern elves have begun to be treated as unwanted guests everywhere they turn. To the north, another realm falls. In the beginning of 1284, General Smith of the Icenrealm Dwarves launched a mass attack from Kilheim into the Fey Queendom. Quickly, the pacifistic nation was brought to its knees and absorbed into Kilheim proper, adding much needed beauty and resources to the desolate, frozen wastes of the north. And thus, the world moves on. Wars are fought and won, kings and queens have come and gone, but still you – the heroic Lords of the North – remain. And now, as the burning summer of 1285 sets in, your story continues. --- Exania: The Demons Within 2 is set in the fantasy world of Exania, a land of many races and kingdoms. The following recognized nations currently exist within Exania – each will be accompanied by a short description of the realm, its rulers, and the races of people the be found there. The Kingdom of New Haddrin A militaristic society made up of the race of Man. Haddrin is the southern-most human nation in Exania, and by far the largest nation in the continent. It is home to the most powerful army in the world as well as many of its largest cities. Though recently devastated by war, Haddrin's population remains relatively high. Currently, the nation is ruled by King Cairn de Haddric and his wife, Queen Lyrith, and is also home to the heroic Lords of the North and their families. Imperial Vaen Once the largest empire the world had ever seen, stretching from the Old Elvish lands to well into Azuria, Vaen is now a small, degenerate kingdom. The populace, mostly elven and human, are a pleasure-seeking, hedonistic people held together by its lover-queens and the famed Pegasus Knights. The nation's last vestige of power is its yearly gathering of all the nobles of the land – the Ecclesia. The Mountains of Fal-Azur Home of the Mountain Dwarves, Azuria is a lonely mountain range on Exania's western border. Though plagued by goblins and nightmare creatures from the darkness, the dwarves have carved a noble home into the stone. After the assassination of the previous Lord-Protector, the hyper-religious parties in the mountain took control, and ordered the severance of all contact with the world. What has since gone on within the mountains of Fal-Azur is anyone's guess. The Free Cities of Kilheim A loose congregation of human cities, ranger forts, and dwarven strongholds in the frigid north of Exania that is commonly referred to as Kilheim. Following the devastating War of the Mask, General Smith of the Icenrealm Dwarves took control of the cities, uniting them as a nation and leading them to conquer the resource-rich Fey Queendom, putting the government in exile. General Smith is considered the nation's de facto ruler, though there is a senate made up of city leaders. The latest stories from Kilheim suggest that Smith's army sits on Haddrin's borders, leering at their wealthy neighbors. The Kingdom of Averthran What was once a bickering, disjointed nation of wood elves has recently been united under the elven noble Daiadaen Averthran, and a new kingdom has been formed over the remains of the old Congress. Though a new nation in law and rule, the Kingdom of Averthran sports the mighty armies of the elves and the long traditions of its wizards and rangers. Moreover, though, it marks the first time in a thousand years that most of elven-kind has marched under a single banner. Feather Mountain Lead by the Heron Council, the freed slave-race of herons live together in the snowy peaks of Feather Mountain on the ruins of a barbarian society. Wary of outsiders and closed to most of the world, the herons have lived their lives in pride of their young race's accomplishments, and the fear of elven vengeance for the bloody rebellion they caused five hundred years ago. |
