RAFS poster in 'GTA-style'; let's create a unique rafs poster :P

Okay, Blood and I will post a nice tutorial here on how to make a 'GTA-style' photo of yourself. If all of you create such a photo of yourself, we can add them all together and make a very cool RAFS poster! I'll post my image to begin with so that you can see what the final result should look like (more or less). You need photoshop to make this.

Example pictures:

Posted ImagePosted Image

THE TUTORIAL:

1) Take a good looking 'GTA-style' photo of yourself

2) Open photoshop and open your photo (file --> open)

3) Aply the 'photocopy' filter (filter --> sketch --> photocopy)

4) Slide the bars a bit until you get clear black lines with as few grey in between as possible (I believe I used detail: 7, darkness: 8)

5) Now remove all the grey dots so that you only have the black lines left and thicken the black lines where needed, or draw them yourself when they are missing. EDIT: also remove the background :P

6) You now have a white picture with black countour lines of your photo, the only thing you have to do now is give it some colour. Use colors from your photo by using the sample tool, and use darker colors to add shading. The best way to see how and where to add shading is by either looking at the example pictures, or by looking at official GTA art.

7) If needed you can add some extra black lines afterwards to add a little more detail or to make things look better and then you're done!

If anything is not clear, or you don't know how to do something, please post your question here and we'll try to give a useful answer.

if we want to create a RaFS poster, we should consider a few things first:

  • in order to make them look similar we should all follow the same steps, picture size, thickness of black lines etc
  • how will everyone fit in the poster? you know GTA's boxarts, if we make it in that style we shouldn't worry about it
  • when we add colors there has to be a light source, to know which areas need shading
  • not everyone has photoshop, how will they create their portrait?
  • somebody will have to finish the poster, any volunteers? :)

Well, to add color: select the area you wish to color (you can use the lasso tool, or the polygonal lasso tool, which you can select by right-clicking on the lasso tool icon (can be found on the toolpanel on the left)).

When the area is selected, and you have selected the right color with the sample tool (by left-clicking somewhere on the original photo you can select the color at that spot) you use the 'fill' option to fill your selected area with the selected color (edit --> fill, or shift+F5)

To make the lines thicker: do the same as with the coloring, you select the area where your line is going to be using the lasso tool, and then you fill the selected area, but this time you make it black instead of a color. I recommend using the poligonal lasso tool, because it creates straight lines that are commonly found in GTA art.

if we want to create a RaFS poster, we should consider a few things first:

  • in order to make them look similar we should all follow the same steps, picture size, thickness of black lines etc

picture size doesn't matter, we can crop the pictures down, thickness of lines; just compare to ours

  • how will everyone fit in the poster? you know GTA's boxarts, if we make it in that style we shouldn't worry about it

Yeah i guess the idea was to make it like to boxes style they use in the cover arts

  • when we add colors there has to be a light source, to know which areas need shading

The light source can be different in each picture, simply because we'll all be in seperate boxes so it doesn't matter.

  • not everyone has photoshop, how will they create their portrait?

    NOOBS GOTTA LEARN THE SHIT!
  • somebody will have to finish the poster, any volunteers? :)
I'm willing to finish it, when all the pics are ready :)

when you resize the pictures some lines might look thicker or thinner, we'll see in the end :P

if it's gonna look like the cover art that won't matter indeed :)
