A knock sounded on Indri's door and a smile lit her face. Had Zanzibar come back? "Come in," she called. The door creaked open and a small boy stood in the doorway. He looked like Maenill, and Indri suspected some relationship, but she wasn't really paying attention to the boy.

"My Lady, Zanzibar returned, but she is unwell and cannot come to you right now," the boy murmured. Indri glared at him until he squirmed nervously. She sighed. She could leave Zanzibar, if that was what the unicorn wanted, but she would not stay in Kratyo until Zanzibar made up her mind.

"Zanzibar is fine. Take me to her." The little boy's eyes widened, but he nodded slowly and turned around. Indri followed him to the stables. Zanzibar was in there, but not facing the door... she faced some horse. Indri's frown deepened.

"Zanzibar! If you do not want me with you anymore just tell me. Stop this dancing around the issue... Just because I am a noble does not mean that you should treat me differently, or exclude me from your travels. But if this is what you wish, please tell me. I cannot stay here forever," Indri called angrily.

She had realized she had taken her shoes off, and she did not dare enter the stables barefoot. Zanzibar could come to her, or she could shout across the room - it made no matter to her.

As Zanzibar was quietly chatting with another horse in the next stall and being groomed down good, a voice floated across the room and drifted down into her ears. It was Indri.

Oh crap.. what do I do now? Well, there is no way I can ignore her forever. So, here we go.....

Zanzibar's achy body slowly turned to face Indri across the stable. She stood at the doorway with barefeet, hands on her hips, and a increasingly deep frown slapped on her face.

Zanzibar nudged the stall door with her nose and Evan came up to her and unlatched it letting it swing back. Zanzibar's massive, sleek body moved with grace out of her stall. Her freshly groomed body was magnificent coupled with her great size of 17 plus hands. Her black as coal coat glittered with new found shine, her tail which had just recently dragged the ground more than a foot, was now combed and neatly trimmed up to just below her fetlocks. Her mane was brushed out and conditioned but left long below her shoulders. Her gray horn was also sparkling with some polish. Long feathers still hung from her fetlocks but the whiskers on her face had been trimmed back because they were excessively long. When she reached Indri at the other end all she could say was, "I'm sorry."

Zanzibar hung her head in shame and waited for the petite girl to answer her, probably with anger.

Indri watched when Zanzibar stepped daintily toward her. Daintily, even though she was a giant unicorn, who should have had heavy footsteps. It was not so. It was like looking at a different Zanzibar. Indri had only seen her traveling, with a somewhat dirty coat, tangled hair, and no adornments. Now, she looked like the king's own mount - or she would have if Indri had ever seen the king's mount. Even nobles never saw the Sagacious.

Zanzibar bowed her head, ashamed, and said, "I'm sorry." It shot through Indri's heart like an arrow, but she refused to cry. This magnificent beast, nearly like a dragon, big enough to crush Indri and kill her with just one hoof probably, was apologizing to Indri. She felt a kind of pride she had never felt before. It was not a prideful pride, but rather a humble kind, although that made no sense.

"No, I'm sorry. I should not have lied to you. I swear I will not keep anything from you again. I pledge you my true services, Zanzibar, if you will have me." Not caring anymore about the flies, or the hay, or the dirt, or even stray animal waste, she walked up to Zanzibar and knelt before her, just the way any vassal would to his liege lord.

She wondered if she should bow. People often bowed to dragons when begging for mercy, which is what she was doing in a way, but dragons had terrible tempers. Zanzibar did not.

She noticed that she had failed in keeping back her tears. They were streaming down her face, so she kept it lowered in an attempt to hide them from Zanzibar.

As Indri's words floated from her lips, she walked forward and knelt in front of Zanzibar. Indri's face was turned away from Zanzibar. Not wanting to risk crying when she spoke, Zanzibar just lightly lowered her head in front of Indri. Her newly groomed muzzle just barely reached below Indri's shoulders. Zanzibar let out a deep sigh causing Indri's hair to rustle. She quietly nudged Indri's left shoulder with her muzzle and let her forelock run down onto Indri's hair.

The stable hands and grooms had now quieted down to no more than a whisper and most were watching in amazement and were stunned. Pitchforks, shovels, and buckets full with water were still in their hands but they couldn't believe what a kind and meaningful relationship these two creatures had together. The giant allicorn had just stood there and did nothing. They knew quite well that Zanzibar could have crushed Indri if she would have been angry enough.

As the two stood face to face, but not acknowleging each other, dead silence overcame the stable and only when Maenill walked in unannounced was it broken. Cheerily, the jolly nearly skipped in because of his springy step and welcomed the solemn community. Only when he realized that something was not right, did he stop dead in his tracks and stare all around him. Zanzibar was standing dead still, letting her muzzle rest on Indri's shoulder. Indri, herself, was kneeling before the great beast who was immacuately groomed, he couldn't help noticing.

Something is definetely not right here, my normally cheerful, bouncy community is stunned into silence. Mayor Maenill noticed after examining the quarters.

Zanzibar looked up from Indri slowly and painfully. Deep sorrow penetrated her eyes. They fogged up with sadness as she looked at Maenill without saying a word. He moved toward Zanzibar one slow step at a time, his own eyes distraught with confusion. The stable silence was broken.

Zanzibar came to Indri, placing her nose on her shoulder. As her forelock mingled with Indri's own hair, she knew she was forgiven. She declined to rise. As she knelt in the muck with Zanzibar there, she felt more at home than she ever had in her mansion with servants answering her every beck and call.

She was dimly aware of the silence, and she assumed that the stable hands were staring, but she did not mind. She was not on the same plane of existence as them, it seemed. She knew she would soon reenter the usual plane, when they left to find the flower to heal Zanzibar of her curse. Then, Indri knew, they would have to kill Cazador. There was no other choice. They could not leave him to expose others with the same pain. For now, though, she was contently apart from the world, enjoying these few moments before trouble arrived again.

Somehow, it came sooner than she expected. She here trotting human footstep behind her and the rustle of people turning their attention away from her and Zanzibar. She nearly stood and whirled around to demand why anyone would interrupt their peace. She stopped herself, though. Instead she slowly detached herself from Zanzibar and turned.

Half-heartedly wiping away the wetness of tears, she saw Maenill. Assuming a haughty air, she gazed at him. He looked confused, and much too joyous at disturbing her peace. "Why do you come here in such high spirits, Maenill?" she demanded sharply.

She wanted to leave Kratyo now, she decided abruptly. She did not like this blustering jolly man. He should be more stern or solemn, for he had a whole city to keep safe. With so many lives in his hands, he should be more... more aware.
