Lady Mage Trilkiyri of House Aesyha was visiting in Arroka on behalf of Lady Renaiya of House Navalyd. Or so she had told Renaiya's father when she wrote expressing her wishes to visit their daughter. In truth, she was eager to see once again the aptly named Festival of Amity. Well, aptly named those hundreds of years ago when it started because of a truce made between Talacca and its extinct but back then powerful neighbor, Erahl. Now it had changed into two days set aside for lovers and fun. However, in Arroka and some other kingdoms, it had been taken to the extreme. In this kingdom, it was a required two weeks spent with eliable young nobles at the end of which, you must get married. This custom intrigued her, as did the young Renaiya who knew more of magic than many mages, but could not draw on any power herself. So Trilki had made her wishes clear, then awaited an invitation.

The expected invitation had arrived, but Trilki waited until The Festival of Ardor passed in Luekca. She waited for a single reason: Nalik Saron. Nalik was a servant, but a sweet man. She knew he was nervous of her older brothers, and of denial from all the nobles, and she knew it was improper, but somewhere deep down, she knew that he'd ask her. But Ardor came and went, and no more than the usual word left his mouth.

The whole trip over to Arroka was spent weeping or raging, but by the time she arrived, she had control over herself. Next year. Next year, she knew it would come. Oh, how wonderful it would be to be married! But no, Nalik was not ready yet, and she would accept that. Next year it would all be different.

She arrived in Arroka in a steely mood, covering up her grief only to discover that Renaiya had disappeared. Kidnapping was suspected but because there were no witnesses, no one could be sure. The next day, she went to town and wandered about, not paying any attention to where she was. She was careful not to wear white, the mourning color, which could indicate that she thought Renaiya was dead.

Everybody was gathered in clumps for warmth snickering and kissing and enjoying the time with their lovers. She really was sick of it when she saw someone alone. No lover, no friends, just wandering alone. She smiled, curious as to why anyone would be alone in the snow and cold. She trotted up to the person and saw...
