Hoar means "grey hair". In biology, if a plant leaf or stem is fuzzy, it is described as hoary and hirsuit if the hairs are coarse and stiff.

Anyway, hoarfrost is ice crystals that have the appearance of hair or grey hair.

That is true WW. I think I like my pond more in the fall and winter. Less work for one thing but peaceful too in a way. Everything has slowed down so you can really inspect the beauty of it all. I find myself so busy in the growing months that I don't really get to stop and smell the roses so to speak. In the winter I can just go out to sit, watch and not feel like I need to do a thing.

OK, T, you want ice crystals? Here's what my pond looks like today. I haven't used the floating heater yet and the aerator hole is slowly being encased in an ice dome, so when the subzero stuff hits next week, I'll probably have to put the heater in. My ice crystals aren't nearly as pretty as yours, though.

Where are your ice skates? :o

How thick do you think the ice on the pond is? Looks pretty thick.

Appears to be about two and a half inches. Temps are supposed to go below zero at night in a couple of days, so I put the floating heater in today.
