Took this today. The go pro camera does distort things a little bit with it's wide angle lens I have noticed. Anyway, you can see how full the stream is with all the plants that are growing in there. I've been watching it to see how high it will get and it's making me a little nervous  . I'm hoping this will be about it's limit. http://youtu.be/R7-tzALQCT4 |

If it makes you nervous, listen to yourself. Thin out the plants. They can, and will, establish a mat of root growth that will eventually clog the normal water flow within the stream channel, the water will rise and begin flowing over the edge of the stream. It can happen overnight. The roots are growing and filling in the spaces within the channel, but not enough to make the water rise. It finally reaches a point where the voids are not large enough to allow all the water to remain at normal levels and the water begins to rise and overflow the stream. That can happen literally overnight if the walls of the stream bed are not significantly higher than the water level. That's one of the reasons I stopped growing water celery in my stream. I had to trim it back several times a season and still had several incidents of losing water by overflow. You might also like to experiment with a modified stream design to accommodate the plant growth by putting a pipe under the the gravel in the stream to carry water unimpeded should the plants get too thick. To prevent the pipe from taking the water except when the stream begins to rise, put a 90 degree elbow on the upper stream end of the pipe so that the opening to the ell is at the normal water level. When the water begins to rise, it will enter the ell and flow through the pipe. You'll know when to thin the plants when the stream appears to be running dry, but water is still entering the pond at the bottom of the stream at the lower end of the pipe. |

We are on the same page. Thinning out the stream is on my "to do" list for Saturday. I'm not too happy about making a mess in the pond but you gotta do what you gotta do and the fish will just have to suck it up :swimfishy: It's just making me too darn nervous that it might overflow. DP, I don't know if I will ever get around to modifying the stream bed since that would require me to not be lazy. It does give me something to mull over on the rainy days when I can't be outside as much. I like the idea and I don't think it would be that hard to do, it's the "doing" part that is hard. |
