Today I decided to clean my pond since it was a nice day out and all. I climbed in with all my fancy ponding attire and proceeded to trim back the plants. I was all done and gave things a quick look to make sure that I didn't miss anything. Sure enough, I had. I stroll over to get those two last plants and that is when it happened. Down I went and my hip boots filled with water. Shall I mention that the water (pond water with fish poop of course) was cold. I went clear in up to my, well, my "girl holder". Arm pits soaked, front and back soaked, inside my boots soaked. By the time I got to the door of the house Mr. DH checked on me. He says "did ya fall in?". Yep, I says. He then starts laughing. At first I wasn't too happy about it but what can you do, it was funny.... I do not intend to repeat it though.......... :swimfishy: |

I did pond work today, too, but I didn't fall in. pppft I drained the lily pool, drew down the pond and did a permanent repair on the crack I sealed this summer, put all the lilies in the pond, captured all the baby goldfish to give away, trimmed all the reeds and cattails, and did a general cleanup. I put the heavy duty bubbler in the remaining pond water and will go out at midnight tonight to start the pond refill. I use chest waders. Those might have kept your "girl holder" dry. Marcia took a picture of me in the waders. I'll have to get it from her and post it. She thought it was pretty funny. See, I get laughed at even when I don't fall in. She laughs at me just because I'm me. B) |

Did a little wading myself this past week end. Added a planter to one of my smaller ponds incoporating a center pole which will allow the netting to cover the pond like a tent would but still allow enough room around the edges for the frogs to come and go as they please during the warmer months. Leaves also tumble to the edges for easy removal. It was always a chore keeping the netting out of the water. I use chest waders also but mine are boot less. I then slip on water shoes that hopefully have ended my Oh S**t here I go. I will attest it's not a lot of fun. |

I did have the video recorder out in the pond doing some underwater video. I had thought about placing it in the pond and leaving it there so I could show everyone how the fish swim around me when I'm in the pond. I figured it wasn't that big of a deal so I didn't do it. Would have been pretty funny to see me fall down for SOME people I guess. |

I don't want to scare the poor fish.
I still have 4 but they are camera shy :red: . No, really they were in the video but the camera lens distorts the fish so it's hard to tell them from the goldfish at times. The Orfes are the biggest fish. Even the bigger koi look small and the small koi looks big  . Don't ask me why that happens cause I don't have a clue :noclue: |

OK, T, no more waiting. Here are two pix of me in the drained-down pond with my chest waders on. The first is me scrubbing algae off the wall and the second is me looking at Marcia taking my picture. Note the banner in the first picture, "Welcome to our pad". That's a present from Frogman3 when he visited in June. Posted Image Posted Image |

No. I removed the algae from the three areas where I had a concrete crack. I had found three last spring and, not wanting to drain the pond for a permanent repair when the pond water was warming and the days were hot, had drained it down and used hydraulic cement to fill the cracks. The hydraulic cement hardens in a matter of minutes, so I didn't have to keep the pond drained down for more than a couple of hours when the water was warm and oxygen levels were critical. Now that the water temperature is down, I could permanently patch the cracks with a layer of fiber-reinforced concrete and, in the case of the one larger crack, with metal reinforcement as well. The problem with doing that in the summer is that the concrete has to set at least overnight and that's best done when the water is cold and holds more oxygen. Not so stressful on the fish. Removing the algae allows me to adhere the concrete patch well beyond the crack itself to make a strong repair. Unless one is going to put a new sealing surface on the entire pond, it is never a good idea to remove the algae patina from the walls of the pond. It is an important part of creating a balanced pond. A scrupulously clean pond is not a healthy pond. |
