That is a cute planter. I've never seen one like it before. Yep, there are some nice people around still. Hard to find sometimes since the bad ones are the ones that really stand out. |

So far so good. No heron today and I hope never again. Your right at least the alarm lets me know trouble could be brewing. I was sure thankful yesterday when it sounded. You know something really amazing. The remaining fish were spawning in the planters by the waterfall. Do you think they know how sad I am??? :boohooguy: Just joking. Maybe some of the babies I have now or the ones to come will have some shubunkin or sarassa in them. As far as the plastic heron it is still in one piece for now. I asked my daughter to come and get it. She can put it in her flower bed if nothing else. Even if it wasn't the reason the heron came I still don't want to see anything resembling that bird pppft Hopefully the fish will make use of the cave. At least they have a place to hide. I am still thinking about alternatives for hiding them. |

Spawning is when they are most vulnerable to Heron attack since they themselves spend time eating their own eggs and are near the surface hence they are easy pickings. You can take a piece of corrugated drain pipe add a rock inside and it will do. It gives them a place to hide but I doubt they will take shelter until after one of their brethren has been snatched. I have watched great herons feed for years at my works pond and if the fish are accessible in shallow water they are lunch I'm afraid to say. |

How big of a piece of pipe do I need? Right after the attack they seemed to stay in the center of the pond where it is deepest so I could put a piece there. |

A six to eight inch works fine sunk to the bottom with a rock inside. The trick is keeping the rock from falling out before it settles to the bottom.I stuff batting in one end so that does not happen. Just a cheap and easy way to give them shelter and easy to remove for cleaning if you ever vacuum. Rocks on the bottom are a pain to move around once they are sunk. |

I went over to the pond store yesterday to pick up the fish they offered me. First thing they had to tell me was a heron was there in the morning. They had not had a problem with herons before either. Seems to me like they are preferring this area or maybe the same one that got my pond. :swear: The store is only about a mile from me. |

Not so far. :hapydnc: The last time he was here I had the alarm turned up on high and it did startle him away  Also, we made it out there each time he back so maybe he is thinking twice about stopping for lunch..... I do still worry some because Indianapolis has an awful lot of retention ponds. Especially in this area so maybe that is what is keeping him around. I am not planning on turning the alarm off anytime soon so if he does decide to visit again I will be ready for him. |

I dropped by the pond store again yesterday. It is always so relaxing to visit. They have a large waterfall and stream and a bench nearby. They keep the fish they offer for sale in large tanks outside the store. I had mentioned to them that day I picked up my fish that they should cover their them because they seemed to easy to get into. Well that night before he got a chance to make the covers the heron raided their tanks and took a lot of fish. The next morning when they came in scales and blood everywhere. They have some long tanks for plants and the heron even got all the fish they had in those tanks. It must have been there a while because it did a lot of damage. I think he is ready to :boom: the heron. |

Sounds like the bird almost wiped them out. He is doing what he does to survive but a person sure wishes he would do this fishing someplace else. :swear: I do have a few extra goldfish if the pond store guy needs them   :swimfishy: |

I found a piece of tubing out back from an old snapper riding mower bagger. It was a perfect size for the fish to hide in and cheap too  Thanks for the help Froggy. |

Hate to say this but I think your pond store was raided by something other than a Heron. Herons swallow the fish whole and other than stabbing a large fish with their beak and leaving it cause it's too large to swallow, they will not leave much signs of their visit. Minks and otters chew their prey and will wipe out a pond many times before moving on. Raccoons do also but are not near as efficient at catching fish. Their are other birds of prey that are fish eating but normally fly away with their prey before tearing into the fish. |
