Overdosed the Koi Clay

Yikes, I accidentally tipped the Koi Clay over in the pond. I was doing a dose and my clumsy self knocked about a quarter of a 2 lb tub of Koi clay into the pond. Water is pretty murky right now and I am kicking myself for doing it.

Please, does anyone know if this will hurt my fish?

I've never done it myself but heard of it happening without any ill effects to the fish. That all would depend on how much was dumped in. How big was the container?

Never mind, I reread read your post and see it's 2 pounds.
Is there any clumps you can scoop out?

I found this article that says you can't overdose: http://www.thrivekoiclay.com/dosing.html

I'm betting once your pond clears up in a day or two it will sparkle.

I hope your right T. I tried to get some with a net but a lot of it dispersed with the filter running and a more fell through the net.

If I do end up with a sparkling pond I will be happy but didn't think of doing it like this. :idiot:

This is what you can expect to happen if you overdose the Koi clay.

I went out today and the string algae looked sort of funny. Not sticking out from the sides like it was. It appears the clay has caused the algae to start dying off. Most was settled in the lowest part of the pond.

I used the net and scooped out a lot. I bet no joking there must be at least 5 lbs in a pile in the grass. That stuff is really heavy. Instead of being hairy like it was it now is sort of slimey pppft

It would be a breeze to clean up if I had a pond vacuum. Maybe I will try the shop vac this weekend.

One good thing is that I found all my Japanese trapdoor snails. The algae even came off their shells. I had not seen them over the winter and figured they died but they were in the algae at the bottom. :amen:

Is the algae dying or just clumping up and becoming "unglued"?
If it's turning brown and dying then you need to keep a watch on your water quality. Too much dead stuff is a bad thing as you may already know.
If the algae is actually dying, can you do small water changes this time of year?

I'm not trying to freak you out but just a heads up. :)

Take all that algae that you scoop out and put on your flowerbeds. They will love you for it. :sparkflwr:

The algae is still real green but not sticking. I would say it is clumping and becoming unglued. The consistency of the algae has changed so it is a nasty sort of mess.
I will do a partial water change in the morning just to be safe.

Strange thing is I was feeding the fish and saw a pair of sissors in the bottom of the pond. This was very weird. They were not there yesterday.

I have not been losing water yet and am hoping that someone did not try to puncture the liner. I know the sissors are not mine because they have blue handles. Small like a childs pair but sharp. I didn't realize the algae was so loose until I tried to get the sissors out.

Why in the world would anyone throw a pair of sissors into the pond anyway. I do have some strange neighbors around here but what the heck?

Once you get it all cleaned up I bet you won't have any more for a while ;)

That is strange about the scissors. I bet it was a kid. Could they have been out cutting flowers?

You don't have more fish than what you used to have do you, like maybe double? :thkg:

Very, very weird! :scopeout:

The good thing about string algae is that is goes away after things warm up OR if you dump in a whole container of koi clay

My theory is the fish just became tired of all the string algae ordered a pair of scissors on line, trimmed the algae and forgot to put the shears back in the drawer. Try this test when your lilies need divided. Add a small shovel to the pond and see what happens.

On the serious side I would be freaked out to find scissors in my pond to the point of setting up surveillance cameras but that's just me. :swear:

I like your theory frogman.

My husband has a cam on the pond 24/7 but unless we are watching it then we don't see what is going on. He needs to set it up to record.

I just don't know about young people these days. I was taught respect and if it is not yours don't touch it.

I have 2 mares that are ready to foal in the front pasture next to the house. A couple of days ago I caught 4 young kids that just moved in our neighborhood walking up to the fence with sticks and one picked up a rock. I hate to think what they were going to do if I had not caught them.
We have several no trespassing signs for what good they are.
And today I heard a bunch of teenagers laughing and when I got outside to find out what was going on I saw them trying to feed the mares potato chips.

I wish spring break was over already.... :swear:
