It's 42 and sunny today. Went out to the back yard to look at the ice melting off the pond. I saw one dead goldfish frozen in the ice -- first I've seen as a winter kill except for the bluegill last year.

Also saw a small turtle moving slowly in the algae along the side near the top of the water. Looks like there are signs of awakening.

Yep, there's a thin layer of ice back on the pond. Going to be cold with a possibility of light snow on several days this week. However, spring is coming. I was just thinking -- it was just a year ago that Denny and I were doing the final planning for his pond and we started actual work on it the last week of March. That's not far off, now. We can soon start to look forward to some nice weather from time to time.

However, spring is coming.

I keep telling myself that.

When Puxatony Phil saw his shadow I think he brought on the cold weather we missed this winter.

Snowing here today.... :'(

It snowed about an inch here today, too, and the temperature has dropped precipitously. It's now 13 degrees on the front porch and 15 degrees at the DeKalb airport. March will soon be here, along with the hope of warmer days to come.

Not much snow this year and above average temperatures for the most part. Still I have been hibernating for the most part, reading books to pass the winter.

I was thinking what gets you all revved up to start spring ponding?

For me it's the first spring pond catalog displaying all those blooming lilies. Yesterday it arrived non other than William Tricker catalog that claims to have been in business since 1892.
I happened to be in the vicinity of my local Lowes this evening and stopped in to check the pond supplies and to my joy they had marked down all their Tetra pond supplies 50% among the goodies I purchased was two 20 gallon lotus/water lily tubs for 10.00 ea. I was surprised at the selection was so good.

Ugh, I have to say that I'm not so revved up this year yet (for the pond part). I start to get excited about the lillies but then think about the :x aphids and it's all downhill from there. :boohooguy: I'm almost liking the fall/winter better. No :x aphids, clear water and not much work to do. I really enjoy seeing my fish swim to the top when they see the food person. :swimfishy:

I did get all excited when I got a couple of bulb catalogs here a month or so ago but that has worn off already.

Your Lowes is way better stocked than the ones out here. Trying to find a good selection of pond supplies is like pulling hens teeth.

Glad you scored yourself some good deals!

Tonight I found myself at the same shopping center that Lowes resides in so I just had to take another peek at the pond supplies. All the Tetra pond supplies were gone replaced by another manufacture at normal prices. As I made my way to the exit an Employee asked if I had found what I was seeking. I asked what happened to all the Tetra supplies that were on sale and he stated that they had been pulled and were being repriced at 75% off and would be back out for sale next Monday. Curious as to what was going on he informed me that due to Tetra not being able to keep Lowes supplied last summer corporate office decided to discontinue handling Tetra products going ahead. What's funny the discounted items they had last week was the largest and best selection I have ever seen them carry. This decision holds true for all over the USA. Monday I plan a return visit.

Thought I would check out our Lowes to see if they were having the same sale.
They stock Smartpond not Tetra so no cheap prices.

Yep, Smartpond is the new line that they had on display but they still have the Tetra to dispose of @ my Lowes. Here is hoping they follow through with the mark down again. :bud_beers:

Actually I am only planning on keeping the old fashioned pitcher pump. It has a filter and pump underneath. The pond is 6' x 18" and approx. 317 gallons. Comes with 12 goldfish :swimfishy: and water plants. The fish won't be hard to rehome.

Anyone need a preform pond ;)
