Christian Guildford defended the right of individual MPs to present private member's bills on issue personal to them and their constituents, to stimulate public and legislative debate.

"I have made it abundantly and unequivocally clear that I do not support any reform that attempts to make divorce easier, or make marriage a union entered into more lightly" Began Dr Guildford, who had already pledged to vote down the current bill. "I would, however, caution all parties in the house against further undermining democracy by denying the importance and right of individual MPs to present their own views and the views of their constituents on issues of conscience."

"Mr McCleod should be praised for his bravery in bringing this issue out into public discussion, something that is integral to ensuring our legal system is open, accountable, and subject to routine review"

"What we have hear is a party that seized office from the government with the most elected MPs, then failed to hold themselves to public accountability, deflecting their lack of action, lack of policy, and lack of concern for Canadian working families by striking at the core of our democracy"

"I have certainly put forward my view on this issue, but marriage law is certainly something we should discuss as a nation, as a legislature, and as families. I am proud of the bravery it takes for a member of this party to stand up and call for such discussions, which speaks volumes by contrast to Liberal government whose only policy is act like they're in opposition"

"I am equally proud of our united and strong caucus, that lives beneath our big tent of supporters, and, unlike the Liberal party, is unafraid to have the frank and earnest discussions needed to move this country forward"
