US and USSR sign SALT II
In Vienna, the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks have concluded with the agreement on a new treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union to limit the production of additional nuclear arms. The new agreement would see bans placed on new missile technology, although some have criticised the exceptions made in this regard for the American Trident program, which will continue unaffected. The treaty is expected to be ratified by the US Senate in the coming months.

Italian General Election Sees "Fractured" Parliament
Italians and commentators across the world have been shocked by huge electoral upsets in the nation's recent poll. The Italian Socialist Party (Partito Socialista Italiano), once the nation's major leftist political grouping, has seen its support evaporate from 9% to 3%, a change which commentators have attributed to perceptions of the PSI's "cosy" relationship with the governing Christian Democratic Party, which has ruled unchallenged since 1945. The Communist Party of Italy, meanwhile, has seen its support rise from 34% to just over 41% of the total vote, outpolling the Government by a small but significant margin. In order to hold onto the Treasury benches, some are saying that Prime Minister Andreotti will be forced to make concessions to minority far-right groupings such as the Italian Social Movement (Movimento Sociale Italiano), which is widely regarded in the West as the successor to Mussolini's National Fascist Party.

Mexican Oil Spill
At least 600,000 tons of oil has been released into the Gulf of Mexico following a blowout at the Ixtoc I well, the largest uninentional spill in history. The well was operated by Pemex, Mexico's state petroleum company, and it was hoped that the discovery of such large quantities of oil might provide vital employment opportunities for Mexico's poor as well as alleviating the effects of decreases in production in the Arab world.

Hussein Assassinated
In Iraq, Vice-President Saddam Hussein of the Ba'ath Party has been killed by Kurdish nationalists while visiting the city of Erbil in the country's North. President Hassan al-Bakr has vowed to "restore order" within the Kurdish-majority region, and has blamed neighbouring Iran for supplying arms and funds to the Kurd minority, re-igniting tensions in the region.

Lord Mountbatten Celebrates Birthday
Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, has celebrated his 79th birthday at Frogmore House, his place of birth. His Lordship, who served as the last Viceroy of the British Indian Empire and then the first Governor-General of the independent nation, said in a brief speech to the assembled guests that although much had changed since the glory days of the British Empire, he was confident that the Commonwealth of Nations could still be a powerful force for democracy and human rights in the world.

Sweden Outlaws Corporal Punishment
In Sweden, the Riksdag has voted to outlaw corporal punishment within the home, becoming the first nation in the world to do so. Although the right of parents to spank their children was first removed in 1966, the new law is the first piece of legislation that explicitly prohibits the practice. The legislative change has received criticism from parents' groups, but children's welfare groups across Europe and North America have expressed support for the move.

Nudist Beach Closed
In Brighton, Britain's first nudist beach has been closed after lengthy protest from the National Anti-Pornography Movement, an offshoot of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association. The Movement's leader, a Mr John Beyer, declared that the closure of the beach was "a victory for decency", while civil rights groups have already criticised the Movement's methods, which included the harassment of the families of the operators.
