“For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearance
as though they were realities and are often more influenced by the things that seem than by those that are”
Darkrai is a terrible creature to the outward eye. To most, he seems a monster or a devil, a wicked spirit, or something out of one of the nightmares that his power creates. Some few have reported him as being able to stand with hidden legs beneath his long flowing body, while others attribute it to the manipulation of his body's overall form. In any event, Darkrai is a slightly larger than human sized spiritual creature that seems to be made of the stuff of shadows, torn black cloth, and wisps of ethereal power. It has 'hair' formed of white energy, and flickering dark flames that move along its shoulders and wrists.

Darkrai's color is primarily black. Most of its features are black or grey, though it has a red collar around its upper body that gives the illusion of being part of some kind of armor. Its eyes are its most striking feature; brilliant green that glows in the light of the new moon, it is said that the eyes of Darkrai can peer into your spirit and your dreams, and visit all kind of misfortune. Whether this is true is unknown, but those who stare long enough will say that Darkrai's eyes are at the very least, shadowed with great age, and a great many memories.

"Language... has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone.”

Darkrai's personality is not well known by many for very few ever see it. It has an air of loneliness about it, and indeed, it chooses its solitude. Darkrai, for all of its incredible power, has the misfortune of having a gentle heart underneath all of its pain and solitude. It truly loves the world it is part of, and it understands humans that choose to walk alone to benefit others, rather than those that isolate themselves to hurt others. More than any other Pokémon, Darkrai understands the necessity of walling yourself off, of shielding others from pain by moving away from them, and living by yourself. While he understands the necessity of his existence because of the balance, he sometimes wryly wonders why Arceus would create such a creature as him. He has no anger towards his creator, unlike Giratina seems to; no, rather, he is saddened because he exists, not that he was brought into existence.

Darkrai avoids contact with others because he does not wish to harm them. Whenever he delivers bad dreams to others by accident because of his uncontrollably huge level of power, he does his best to eat those dreams, allowing the humans to lose a memory of them rather than have to dwell on them. Because of this, however, many see him as malicious and evil, a creature who brings misfortune on humanity and Pokémon alike just to feed. In truth, Darkrai hates his power, and isolates himself from the world, in a far away place. He dwells near only one other Pokémon, his 'Sister' of sorts, the polar opposition to his power; Cresselia. As she is immune to his powers, being the ruler of gentle dreams, she is the only Pokémon he regularly speaks to when he wants to no longer be alone. Darkrai also has a bond to a single unusual human, which has given that human a high tolerance for his power as well; because of this, at times, they are known to mentally discourse across great distances when Darkrai is not in meditation.

"You have to know who you are; if you don't you have nightmares."

Like all Legendary Pokémon, Darkrai is essentially immortal; as the personification of nightmares, it is unknown if he can even truly die. Some have said that as long as at least one being alive has a Nightmare, Darkrai will come back to life. He has been alive as long as he can remember, which is since the beginning. Oddly, unlike many others, Darkrai's power is thought to be connected to a source similar to Giratina's, yet unlike Giratina who is turned more vicious to a point by that source, Darkrai instead retains his heart, but his power spikes become uncontrollable, causing him to draw people into sleep and nightmares. Cressellia's power is a direct counterpoint to his, but naturally she can't be everywhere at once. Darkrai also is able to create vast quanitities of negative energy, and sometimes, even rip the fabric of space itself by splitting the real world and dream world in a single point, creating a blade of distortion. This is similar to Palkia's power, though it draws upon a different dimension of space than his distance cousin's power. In addition, Darkrai is able to fly, as well as phase through solid objects. It is thought this is because Darkrai exists simultaneously in both the real world and the dream world, and can choose which he is solid to at will. This, combined with his inability to fully control his power at times, and the ability to phase entirely into the dreamworld makes him extremely difficult to catch, another reason that among Legendaries, he is one of the most rarely seen.

"The most terrible poverty is loneliness..and the feeling of being unloved."

That feeling again. It was that heartbeat. The Pokémon's eyes slowly opened, blue-green orbs lighting up the night, as it stared ahead into the nothingness it slept in. There was a feeling of..wrongness in the air. An echo of something it remembered when it was born. Something it had reached out and touched, just briefly, before it came down upon the world. Yes, that feeling was truly familiar. And then there was the second feeling. A tiny pulse in the back of his mind. So, 'that man' felt it too, did he? He'd awoken from the same nightmare again. Ironic, wasn't it? The creator of nightmares, having a nightmare himself. He chuckled, the sound a soft echo as he floated, arms crossed, amongst the quiet stillness on his island. Always the same dream. The total, absolute blackness, from which the hundred red eyes stared out. The feeling of absolute malevolence, the urge to rend, to kill, to destroy. The desire to erase everything that the master had made, return it to the proto-matter and thought it had been before all became truth.

"So you feel it too, do you..Old Friend."

Again, the Nightmare-keeper chuckled. When they both had the same feeling, it was usually a sign of trouble. He could sense his old friend going on a journey. He felt it in the man's will. Perhaps, Darkrai thought to himself, it was time he went on a journey of his own. He wanted to find the source of all the disquiet, what he had touched so long ago. In finding it, he might find someone who was willing, and able, to help him at last return his power to what it once was, and allow him to see the sky from somewhere other than his island, at last. How long had it been? He couldn't remember. No, he could remember. If he had a mouth as humans defined, it would have moved to a melancholy smile. He did remember. And that..was why it was so sad being alone.
Oh ZUN, bless this thy Mini-Hakkero; that with it, thou mayest spark thine enemies to tiny p blocks, in thy mercy.
