Holiday Card

Awww Shinx, we missed you around the tree this year,
But we're not all that Grumpig about it.
Here's hoping you have a Swellow Christmas,
And a Happiny New Year!

One Shot - First Snow

There was something very important about this night, she thought.  It was something that made this a night she would keep in her memory.

The forest should have been beautiful beneath the midnight sky.  Even with the deep cover of fluffy white clouds above, the forest should have been alive, should have been vibrant to her usually well adjusted eyes.  But it was not.

The entire world was devoid of color.  In the shallow frame of her face, her eyes were hazy silvery disks, staring blankly as though she saw nothing.  Beside her, the slight frame of her Espeon leaned against her side, supporting her.  She was thin, and she was weak, each foot stepping in front of the other a small bit at a time.

She was free, wasn’t she?  They would leave her alone and she would never have to see the bowels of the laboratory again?  Her hands trembled and she felt her knees buckle beneath her.  Gone was the bold young woman who had less than an hour before left the laboratory that had been her home.  Who then, had cast those who had been her caretakers to the winds as though they were grains of sand falling between her fingers?  Held them, suspended them, and then simply walked out?

No, it had been a different her.  A girl lent the strength to become a woman by the stark realization of what she was bound to become under their control.  Slowly with those thoughts still churning through her mind, she sank downward to kneel beside Eris, half falling, as she wrapped her arms around the neck of her companion.

It was only the support of the Pokémon beside her that kept her from falling on her face.  Though, even that support could not stop the salty tears that streaked down her face.  With her face buried against the warm throat of the Espeon who stood patiently as a mother would, she wept.  Whether it was hours or minutes that passed, she was uncertain.  She wept the tears she could not cry for the birth that never should have been, and she wept tears for the pain they had inflicted on her as her body grew far too rapidly.

Beyond the pain, there was barely controlled anger, but it was almost nothing in comparison to the realization of what she had done.  She had truly left them.  And now she had nothing but the clothing on her back, the little money she had shoved into her pocket, and her friend supporting her.  As her tears eventually dried, spent, she realized that beyond the warmth of Eris, it was growing colder.

She lifted her head to find the Pokémon staring at her, black eyes filled with the unique understanding that was shared between them.

“Are you better?” The voice was a whisper across her mind, and slowly, she nodded.  “I will be, in time.”  She reached to run a hand across her eyes, fingers brushing the tears from her face, running her damp hand across her jeans to dry it.

Slowly, the girl brought herself to her feet, hands brushing up her arms in an attempt to warm them.  “It grows colder,” she said, her eyes turning skyward.  “It was always so warm in the facility.”

The Espeon shook her head faintly.  For a human child to not know of the changing of the seasons was pitiful.  To consider that other humans had inflicted this state on her was unthinkable.

“You will see,” Eris said, looking upwards at the girl beside her.  “It will be even colder soon.  We will need shelter.”

Parvana stared at Eris with a confused expression on her face, and attempted to delve into the mind of her closest companion, but gently.  Eris allowed her mind to shield itself, and Parvana instantly withdrew, no strength left in her to fight the battle that would be required to know the mind of her friend.

“There are things in this world,” Eris began, “That you will have to learn for yourself.  And no amount of brushing my thoughts will teach you the things you need to know to survive.  They made you grow and I watched.  They taught you things about their world and I watched.  Now I must watch you learn to live on your own.  Otherwise your escape will mean nothing, and neither will the strength you gain from it.”

The girl frowned down at her companion and exhaled a deep sigh, her eyes almost crossing in front of her as she stared at the breath coming from her mouth, now soft puffs of white visible with each exhalation.  It was cold.  What season was it?  They had told her that seasons changed, though she had never seen it.  No, inside the climate controlled laboratory it had always been warm.

She glanced behind her, to the direction where warmth still lay; knowing that if she returned her life would only grow worse.  Still, taking to heart what Eris had told her, she began walking again, one foot in front of the other.  It was only in this way that she would manage to make it to whatever her destination would be.

And so on the road they continued in relative silence, only the sounds of the night, and the steady thud of Parvana’s boots on the ground accompanying them.  Just head of them, the forest they had been moving through spread open into a wide field.  Whether led there by the path, by Eris, or by some unknown thought of her own, she entered a field of tiny white flowers.  Their leaves a deep green, each flower was delicate and gentle, with six white petals bursting out from the center like a star.  And in the growing wind that passed the clouds across the moon, the petals began to dance across the field.

It was the first time in her short life that she had seen something so pure.  Something that was so easily capable of taking her breath away.  And so in the middle of the field, she crouched, easing forward to catch one of the tiny flowers as the wind pulled it from its stem to drift across the field.  A Star of Bethlehem, a flower named for a star that was meant to represent hope.

Parvana’s eyes closed and Eris said nothing, merely looking skyward.  With a nod of resolution at the first stirrings in the sky, she nudged Parvana’s elbow.  Eyes blinking, the girl looked around the field.  Impossibly delicate and thick flakes drifted from the skies above, landing on her skin, cold, and melting.  She glanced at Eris then and stood, a slightly shaking hand reaching out to try and grasp one of the little fragments of ice, only to find it melting as it touched her palm.

“This is.. snow?”  Her voice was full of all the wonder of a child, though despite her body, she was like a child in most regards.  The cold was forgotten in the wake of the wonder of the sight of the world being covered so gently.  Eris body shook with a soft chuckle, and she nodded.  Soon, the blanket of flowers became a blanket of snow, deep white and winter green.

Parvana slowly laid a hand on Eris head, and for a time said nothing, letting the snow fall around them, catching in her brown hair.  The silvery light of her eyes had long since faded, but was replaced with a new shine, and perhaps even a new hope.  That maybe not all the world was as she knew.  Here, in the grip of winter, surrounded by the brilliant purity, suddenly, she knew.

There was something very important about this night, she thought.  It was something that made this a night she would keep in her memory.

Edit: Added a carol, two haiku and a holiday card. @_@ Rawr.... and a story.

AAAAANNNNDDDDDDDD, I'm done. OTL You guys write too much. And, as usual, the haiku contest was hard to judge. There is a condensed list of who won what at the bottom of this post.

To the people who got first place: You tell me which of the two Pokémon you want here. If you don't care which, the second place winner will decide which they want instead. In either say let me know what you want to do here.

To people who need to claim items: It is any item in the shop other than Key Items. You may claim them here simply by posting what you want.

<3 I hope everyone had happy holidays!

CAROLS-------------------------------------

First place goes to Jechocochan, with:

Watch, the Spoinks are All Bouncing (Hark, the Herald Angels Sing)

Watch, the Spoinks are all bouncing
Looking for a shiny thing
Where to find pearls in the wild
When Clamperls live with the tide
From the Jagged Pass they jump
Bounce to cause their hearts to pump
On a long journey to the sea
Bouncing along merrily
Watch, the Spoinks are all bouncing
Looking for a shiny thing

Trainers watch your pokéballs
Trainers hear those spoinking calls
When you sleep a Spoink does pounce
Stealing round things from your pack
Amplify the psychic spring
Wait, this is a useless thing
Ditch the stolen orbs and then
Pick the pearl from where it fell
Watch, the Spoinks are all bouncing
Looking for a shiny thing

Spoink, they made it to the sea
Spoink, avoid calamity
Calling Clamperl from the depths
Deep sea scales and deep sea teeth
Evolving both left and right
Huntail and Gorebyss take flight
Traded for the pearls all round
Spoinks leave with their brand new crowns
Watch the Spoinks are all bouncing
Looking for a shiny thing

Second place goes to Dischord with:
