Zane Burnlight sat on a bench, a haze of smoke forming a sort of cancerous halo around his head. A Haunter, almost as dark as the night it floated through, entertained itself with flitting through the smoke. Around the pair, Olivine City rested to the lullaby of lapping surf and the cries of nocturnal Pokémon. Towering over the city to the south east was the lighthouse, a burning beacon that flashed in the night. After taking a final drag on his cigarette, Zane let it fall from his fingers. Without so much as a glance to make sure the ember wasn’t a fire hazard, he stood and walked down the street. Haunter was quick to follow. Zane spoke over his shoulder to the Pokémon. “Alright, buddy. Find a good one.” Haunter gave a quick bob and sped off into the night. Zane kept walking, confident in Haunter’s ability to follow his orders and return without a problem. It was only a few minutes before Haunter reappeared out of the darkness, beckoning his partner forward. When Haunter finally stopped, he pointed to a nearby apartment complex. Zane surveyed the building with a careful, experienced eye. Olivine City had a reputation for low crime rates and that translated to security measures being either extremely lax or altogether nonexistent. “Good job, buddy,” Zane told his partner. “We’re gonna hit that one there,” he continued, pointing at a ground level residence. “You can eat one dream of each resident, got it? And don’t go wandering off into the other apartments.” Zane cracked his neck and started towards the target. “Let’s roll.” He carefully opened an unlocked window and silently slipped in. Haunter followed just as quietly through the building’s wall. Zane gave the Pokémon several quick hand gestures and the pair set to work. When the owner of the apartment awoke, the only evidence of Zane’s passing would be a decided lack of valuables. Less than an hour later, a different window in the apartment opened. Zane poked his head out and glanced around, making sure there was no one nearby. He exited as quickly as he had entered and, as soon as his boots hit the ground, was simultaneously closing the window with one hand and checking his backpack with the other to ensure it was undamaged. He walked a distance away and lit another cigarette. After a few minutes, Haunter returned to Zane’s side. “You get your meal?” he asked in between drags. Haunter responded in the affirmative by imitating a belching sound. “Classy.” Zane left it at that, having nothing more to say. Haunter would follow him wherever he went, and right now he just wanted to get back to his hotel room so he could sleep. |

Vincent Light walked a dark street a hood over his head and his eyes left to scan the world around him. His Pichu sat upon his shoulder and watched the night sky as Vincent walked the cool streets. The night air was nice and he was glad to be out and about finally. It was time to leave this place behind him soon. If not tonight it would be tomorrow for sure. This was his home but it all just seemed like a cage to him now. This place was just a spot to supply for the coming travels. Feeling the face of Pichu against his own Vicent let out a light chuckle before patting her head gently. No matter what he would make it through all this and will become stronger. This was the only thing he could be sure of. As he passed more and more houses he realized how so many people may not expect a thief. A lot of windows were left open or unlocked at this time of night. Vincent of course not one to normally steal didn't put much thought into it. Other than the fact that the people should at least try to keep there stuff safe. Never know when maybe one of those Pokémon crime teams may come about. Though it couldn't really be helped. Vincent saw life in a way that everyone is free to make there own choices. As long as it don't effect his path of life it's none of his trouble. Especially when it comes to money. Vincent found a lot more things worth while than money. Letting out a sigh he continued to walk the streets listening to the sounds of all the nocturnal Pokémon as he finally reached a new area in town. Fixing the straps around his shoulders for his backpack Vicent spoke softly to his Pokémon as her ears perked up. "When we leave this place Pichu lets make a promise to one another. A promise to say that no matter what we won't give up and never do anything alone." "Pi~" Stopping for a few a little while Vincent started to stare up at the sky as he made mental notes in his head of everything he would have to be sure to do. After all with two younger Pokémon he had plenty of responsibility when it came to taking care of them. Though as usual Vincent found himself realizing how much money he will be spending to feed a certain someone. His Munchlax sure was a problem at times though it will only be worse when he becomes a Snorlax. Teaching him a bit of self restraint will have to be in order. The two looking at each other knowing what they thought at the same time and laughed a little. As the two partners smiled at each other Vincent soon heard the steps of another person only a little ways away. A bit interested to find out who else may be out at this time Vincent made a direct path down the street to intercept the sounds. Once he reached the street Vincent found himself looking at a man walking down the street at him. It wasn't to rare for travelers to come around this time but normally they would of got a Hotel and that was in the other direction behind Vincent. Though if he was heading there now they are probably full for the night so he must of already had a room. Making this a bit more interesting to why he would be out so late. Possibly training his Pokémon or even trying to catch one. Vincent also noticed the Pokémon near the man. It was a ghost Pokémon. If he was correct it was a Haunter. Though they were scary at times most were just very mischievous. Feeling like it would be the polite thing to do Vincent decided he would say hello and see what someone would be doing out here so late. Pichu on the other hand was a little put off by the ghost Pokémon and slipped inside his hood curling around the back of his neck feeling more secure and safe. "Hello sir. How are you on this fine evening? Would you be a Trainer passing through for the League Battles?" |

Zane had noticed the kid from the moment the boy had turned onto the street. One of the virtues of being a confident criminal, he supposed, was being willing to walk with his head held high. Zane had found long ago that people didn’t often question those who looked like they knew what they were doing, and so he always endeavored to maintain a sense of absolute confidence. Now, his proud, self-assured stance and swagger were more natural than a slumping posture had ever been. As Zane approached the only other person on the street, he sized the boy up. He was tall and slender, but not without muscle. A Pokémon – Zane couldn’t tell what kind in the dark – was perched on his shoulder. As the pair came even closer, the small animal on the kid’s shoulder darted inside its partner’s hood. No doubt it had been spooked by Haunter. Zane shifted his backpack and chose against doing anything untoward. There was no need to be any greedier than he already had been tonight. "Hello sir. How are you on this fine evening? Would you be a Trainer passing through for the League Battles?" The kid said as they came within easy earshot of each other. He sighed inwardly, wanting nothing more than to continue on his own way. Zane took a long puff from his cigarette and flicked what was left of it – just the butt, really – twirling into the night. “Hi. I’m well, and no, I’m just a man out for a late night stroll. All that League crap never held much interest to me,” he responded, unsure about what the kid wanted. If the boy was just trying to be polite, the Zane would be able to go on his way. That, however, was the best case scenario, and Zane had learned long ago that hoping for the best case was a long wait for a train that rarely, if ever, comes. Zane stopped walking just outside of arm’s reach from the kid, assuming that the boy would have more to say. Burnlight was not truly interested in a conversation, but had to stay as unremarkable as posible. He casually slipped on hand into a pocket, easily finding his 3 inch pocket knife. He thumbed the safety off and took the weapon into his grasp. All he had to do to prepare it was pull it out and put a little forward pressure on the thumbstud and the blade would shoot to a ready position via spring power. Zane hoped he wouldn’t have to use it. Behind him, Haunter sensed his partner’s tension and drifted closer to his partner. The two had been together since Zane was seven and were well-accustomed to each other’s tells. Before the Pokémon floated too close, his partner held up a hand, balled into a fist, out and away from his body. It was one of their non-verbal signals and it told Haunter to stay back. “Haun,” the Pokémon responded, letting Zane know that he understood and was following the order. With that, Zane let his hand drop, grateful that he wouldn’t, for the moment, stress out the kid’s Pokémon too much more than he already had. |

"The League isn't for everyone. I just wish to live life free." Vincent made a short comment in reply to this strangers and it would seem from the looks of him he was a bit older than Vincent. Though it wasn't something ran to see. All ages would be seen traveling this world. Some of them even a lot older then this guy here. Watching him and keeping a very calm appearance Vincent watched each one of his motions. All the way up to the point where he signaled the Haunter a light gesture. Gazing at the Pokémon for only a second Vincent went back to looking at this new face in town. Pichu managed to finally peek her head out of the hood at the side of Vincent's face watching the two talk. Knowing that strangers here could either be a good or bad thing Vincent didn't know what to expect but being brought up by his father he knew that times like this would be a regular thing while traveling so he would just have to handle everything the best he could and hope this meeting ends well. "Well my name is Vincent Light. This is my hometown and I was planning on leaving to go see the world. If your not traveling through for the league perhaps your looking for someone? People come through this town often and normally stop at my place for a meal or for my fathers breeding and training." It wasn't rare for travelers in this town but it was rare for one to go through unnoticed by Vincent. After all his parents had a good reputation in this town. Even if they weren't here for the league they would always stop in for a meal. This guy had more of a lone spirit type appearance. His Haunter seemed to have a great understanding of his partner just by gestures. It was an amazing and possible frightening sight. Though Vincent had that same bond with his Pichu. Having raised her from an egg Pichu and Vincent have a sense of understanding that don't require words. Sensing Vincent's confidence in the situation lead to her being able to now fearlessly watch the two. After a few short moments Vincent shook his head and looked up to the sky letting out a light sigh. "I'm sorry if I'm keeping you from what you were doing before I arrived. I guess I need to learn not everyone is going to need or even want my help. Though you should be a bit careful around this time of night. It isn't rare for me to spot some of those Poke criminals from those large organizations around this time of night. They don't only kidnap Pokémon. Sometimes people as well. It's very rare in such a peaceful town but with us having this port here not many other good places for sea travelers to come." Vincent felt it was only fair to warn him if he was going to travel around so late at night. It was good for Vincent to just say it to clear his own mind of it. Then to not say a word and then next thing you know this guy gets jumped by a bunch of them. Patting Pichu on the head she took the sign to shuffle down the back of his hood and come out around his back. Standing on the ground by his feet she watched the two humans and also the Haunter. This was a very interesting meeting for Vincent seeing as he always seemed to be able to judge people Vincent couldn't seem to tell if this other guy was good or bad. He seemed to be someone who had possibly his own way of looking at the world. He obviously worked well with his Pokémon but had no interest in the league. A stranger like this doesn't come around often that is for sure. |

"I'm Zane," the older man replied, not comfortable with giving his last name for several reasons. One: last names were traceable. Two: their family names too closely resembled each other – something that Zane took as a sign. He didn’t know how or why, but he felt as if there were some grand, cosmic power at work. He kept quiet about his yearlong journey to find his sister, as well. It wouldn’t do to destroy the kid's wish to travel with a tale of woe. At the very least, Zane was a little pleased to see Vincent's Pokémon, a Pichu, had chosen to peek its head out of the safety of his hood. "I'm sorry if I'm keeping you from what you were doing before I arrived. I guess I need to learn not everyone is going to need or even want my help. Though you should be a bit careful around this time of night. It isn't rare for me to spot some of those Poké criminals from those large organizations around this time of night." Again, Zane got a sense of fate disguised as coincidence. This time, it was almost funny though. He briefly toyed with the idea of telling Vincent what it was that he had been doing, if for nothing more than to see his reaction. Inevitably, common sense won out in the end and he kept quiet, waiting for Vincent to stop talking so he could go on his way. "They don't only kidnap Pokémon. Sometimes people as well. It's very rare in such a peaceful town but with us having this port here not many other good places for sea travelers to come." The mention of people kidnapping other humans brought renewed life into Zane's heart and eyes. This could be the break that he had been looking for for so long. Someday, he might be able to look back and say that meeting Vincent Light in the middle of a dark Olivine City street was the turning point. Zane reached into a jacket pocket and withdrew a photograph. From another pocket came a small but bright flashlight. He stepped closer to Vincent and turned the flashlight on, pointing it at the photo. "Have you seen this girl?" he asked urgently. "She went missing a year ago. If you know anything, I can reward you," Zane added, more than a little hope crowding its way into his tone. In the picture, Serenity clutched her Sentret to her chest. They were both smiling as the wind caught her long, raven hair and made it billow behind her. Her eyes set her apart from her brother. His were orange, like their mother's, whereas Serenity appeared to have received her icy blues from their father. It broke Zane's heart to see the picture again – the only time he looked at it was when he showed it to others. It had been taken mere weeks before her abduction. Her Sentret had just been accepted for a local Pokémon contest. With difficulty, Zane tore his gaze from the photo. Fond memories weren't going to get his little sister back – but the veritable horde of valuables he had gathered over the past year might. He looked at Vincent and waited for the kid's response. He desperately hoped for any sort of recognition, but knew the chances were slim at best. The only people he'd met so far that recognized his sister had been those families that were close to his back in Goldenrod. Behind him, Haunter took on an excited air, too. The Pokémon missed Serenity just as much as Zane did and, regardless of what his own hopes and dreams may have been, wanted to see her returned to her family more than anything. |

Vincent watched Zane go through his pockets to get something and watched as what appeared to be a picture and a flashlight. Watching closely Vincent looked down at the picture when showed to him and took in the face of a girl and her Pokémon. Pichu also climbed back up on top of Vincent as the two looked at the picture. Hearing Zane's words it became very clear to him just what was going on now. Looking long and hard at the picture Vincent came to the conclusion this girl couldn't of been in this town unless she didn't want to be found or was being hidden. Vincent has been going out every day for the past few years and spent a lot of his time around the roads leading here and the ports. She wouldn't of been able to walk in and out without him noticing her at some point in time. After looking at Pichu for a sec the two looked to Zane as Vincent started to speak. "I'm afraid I haven't seen this girl Zane. Though if it helps any. This girl couldn't be here in this town unless she was in hiding. I'm always at the two ways in and out of this town." Vincent placed his hand on Pichu's head who now had a sad expression on her face realizing what was going on. That reaction he got when he mentioned the kidnapping must lead to this girl. If she was kidnapped and was brought out of town there would be a good chance Vincent may be able to help a little. Thinking for a few short moments Vincent wondered if she may of been kidnapped by one of the Pokémon Thief Teams. It wouldn't be to out of there way to kidnap a girl her age and then possibly use her in one of there schemes or hold for ransom though if she was held for ransom then she would probably of been at least known of by now by Zane. "I'm assuming you already checked her home town so she would have to be out of town. No normal kidnapper would take the time to take her out of town. She may be a victim of a kidnapping from one of those Pokémon crime teams I mentioned." Vincent wasn't no Sherlock Holmes but he was a very bright kid and he knew that a normal kidnapping where the person would have a Pokémon sure does fit the chances of it being a Pokémon Crime Team. On top of that if he did check the hometown where she is from and didn't find any trace of her and is looking out of town no normal kidnapper would do it or be able to pull it off. Seeing as if it was one single traveler they wouldn't be able to transport her. Pending on how long she has been gone for it could make things very difficult when searching for someone. The real big reason is with each day the chances slim. "How long has she been missing Zane? More activity from the crime teams have been seen in the past year so you may be able to at least know where to look. On top of that anything crime related they would have track of I bet. Probably even more so than any cop." |

"I'm afraid I haven't seen this girl Zane. Though if it helps any. This girl couldn't be here in this town unless she was in hiding. I'm always at the two ways in and out of this town." The kid seemed genuine – he really didn’t know anything about Serenity. Zane felt his shoulders sag before he put the photograph away, mentally admonishing himself for getting so worked up over a coincidence. It only took a few seconds for his cold sorrow to turn to blazing rage. He wanted to scream and shout and cuss at the top of his lungs, to find the people that would dare take a 16-year old girl from her home and rip their throats out, to let the world and the universe at large know that Zane Burnlight was one man that was not to be trifled with. Instead, he kept a tight rein on his outward expressions, put the photo and flashlight away, and pulled out another cigarette. The only sign of his inner fury was a slight tremor in his hands. Due to his being caught up in his own little world, he completely missed Vincent’s suggestion to search Goldenrod – something he had done for two months before setting out on the road. "How long has she been missing Zane? More activity from the crime teams have been seen in the past year so you may be able to at least know where to look. On top of that anything crime related they would have track of I bet. Probably even more so than any cop." “Where can I find them?” Zane asked in a cool voice. “Do you know of any of their hideouts?” He took a drag on the cigarette. Just over his shoulder, Haunter took on an agitated air. He recognized Zane’s new mood. Somewhere, someone’s day was going to be violently ruined, and quite possibly soon depending on whether Vincent knew anything. |

"Well Team Rocket is the top crime syndicate around here. Goldenrod City was a big place for them and any other big city was a real hot spot for these guys." Vincent looked at Zane and could tell how upset all this made him. It was the body language he gave off that just screamed how hurt he was by not being able to find this girl. The exact hide out spots for one of these crime syndicates was not so easy to find seeing as if just anyone knew them then cops would of busted them by now. Rumors are all people hear these days. Though sometimes the most unbelievable rumors or the most truthful. After standing there in thought for a little while Vincent realized maybe there was another way he could help Zane. It was obvious Zane was really desperate to find this girl. If that is the case Vincent would have to do anything he could to help him. "Zane why don't we work together and find this girl? I bet if we found a rocket base we could find out just where this girl is. With all there resources they have to know something." Vincent snapped his fingers and Pichu went digging through his pack while he held up his hand. Pulling out a map Pichu handed it to Vincent and received a warm pat on the head in return. Unfolding it to reveal Ecruteak City Vincent read a few of his notes to make sure. Seeing that his father use to tell him of everything he learned and saw on his trips Vincent made notes to all the towns to look out for from Pokémon to more dangerous things. Holding it out to Zane Vincent spoke out in a calm tone as he waited to see what Zane had to say about his idea. "Ecruteak City was another place where it was rumored that these guys were up and about. My dad told me he saw someone from Team Rocket there before. I bet if we went to this city along with maybe a few of those other cities they were seen in we could help you get close to finding that girl. What you think?" Vincent didn't exactly know Zane and didn't even know what this could turn out to be. He could tell that someone like Zane couldn't bare to look at that girl the way he does without being a good man at heart. Vincent would have no idea how he would handle losing Pichu or Munchlax. If he lost them it would be like losing a child after raising them from eggs. He just wanted to help Zane and if it meant traveling with him and helping him investigate everything he would. |

Again, he was pointed towards Team Rocket. It made sense, really. They were the largest crime syndicate in the region. How they managed to stay in business after so many were beaten by trainers half their age was a total mystery, but Zane supposed that determination had to count for something. The problem with using them, though, was finding them. If they had been in Goldenrod, then either they were well hidden, or he was just plain stupid. Neither option was very appealing. "Zane why don't we work together and find this girl? I bet if we found a Rocket base we could find out just where this girl is. With all their resources they have to know something." Zane fixed the kid with a sad, almost pitying look. Someday, Vincent was going to be too nice to the wrong people, and they were going to screw him over for his troubles. The kid just kept on talking, though. "Ecruteak City was another place where it was rumored that these guys were up and about. My dad told me he saw someone from Team Rocket there before. I bet if we went to this city along with maybe a few of those other cities they were seen in we could help you get close to finding that girl. What do you think?" “What do I think?” Zane asked, almost mocking. He looked at Haunter while inhaling on his smoke. The Pokémon had a hopeful, if pleading, look on his face. It had been a long time since they had had a companion on their travels. Zane exhaled while he spoke, expelling smoke with every word. “Well, for starters, I think that you’ve gotta stop trusting people on impulse. Aside from that, two heads are better than one and it’s been a while since Haunter’s had a chance to play with anyone new. If you think you can keep up, then you’re welcome to join me, kid.” Zane started to walk past Vincent – he could follow or not, it was his decision to make. He made it only a few steps down the road before he turned back around. “I will warn you, though: when I find the people that took my little sister, the gloves’re coming off. There will be blood. You try and get in the way of that, then some of it will be yours. Are we clear?” It was the same warning that he had given to his past companions and every word of it still rang true. Zane hoped the kid fully understood his meaning and would stay out of the way when the time came. Young Vincent could learn more about Zane’s path in the world in due time, but the standard disclaimer would be enough for now. |

"I understand Zane but I trust you. At least I trust the fact that I know you really care about this person and so I'll do everything I can to help you." "Pi!" Vincent and Pichu both replied to Zane's remark almost instantly and at the same time. Knowing well that maybe someday this heart of his will get him into trouble but stopping from listening to it wasn't going to come easy. Rather it was something Vincent didn't plan on doing. Watching Zane walk past him Vincent turned and started to follow right along only to stop in light of Zane's words. Looking at Zane Vincent knew that this was going to turn into something awful at some point. Though if these things had to be done to save the life of this girl then that is fine. Vincent won't get in his way but Vincent won't back down from helping him. "I understand Zane. I'm here for one thing only and that's to help you get that girl home safely." Vincent was still young but he understood one key thing. That was he would have to make choices only he could make. His parents couldn't choose what he would do from now on. It would craft the person he will grow up to be. Vincent would live with the choices he made. He had no problem in trying to become strong and help Zane and with that he would know now that him and Pichu would now have someone to travel with and goal. He would continue to better himself along his path to become a strong trainer but now that reason was not for facing in the league but for facing off against criminals. Walking forward once more Vincent watched as Pichu jumped of his shoulder onto the ground and started to run around from side to side on the street as they passed all the side roads. She was excited to know we were finally leaving and he knew that he would have to teach her to be more serious at times but for now she should enjoy the fact that she now has some new people to be around. "So when do you think we should leave? I'm ready to leave at any point in time. Everything I own is on my back already." Vincent didn't care if it was time to leave now. In fact leaving now could give them a bit of a head start. Though Vincent had no idea how tired Zane may be. A day has gone by and he could be tired from searching or doing whatever is he does. Either way Vincent felt like it would be a good idea if they talked a few more things out and Vincent would also learn of where he might be heading. This Team Rocket base would most likely have a decent amount of Pokémon in it. Some training will surely be required along the way. Munchlax will not like all the extra work but will enjoy the reward if he works hard. |

Zane continued walking while Vincent spoke. Even though a small part of him hated to admit it, getting Serenity back was going to have to be a team effort. While mostly grateful for the kid’s help, Zane had to wonder just how long it was going to be before Vincent decided that he didn’t like Zane’s methods and either tried to stop him or quietly disappear. In Zane’s experience, there was a roughly even chance of either happening. His last travelling companion had tried to rat him out to the police. Her reward was a nightmare, courtesy of Haunter, so terrifying that she was nearly rendered catatonic. The guy before her had left on much more amicable terms: wordlessly in the dead of night. "So when do you think we should leave? I'm ready to leave at any point in time. Everything I own is on my back already." Zane just shook his head. Vincent was so eager, so ready to go. It was ridiculous, really. They’d only met ten minutes ago and the kid was willing to give up almost everything he knew to join some stranger’s quest? Zane wasn’t sure if it was bravery or idiocy that motivated the kid. That’s youthful idealism for you, Zane thought dismissively. He could tell now that when Vincent’s trial by fire happened, the kid would be forever changed. Whether he came out the other side for better or for worse depended almost solely on his determination – something which had yet to be truly tested, as far as Zane could tell. “We’ll leave tomorrow morning,” Zane said over his shoulder while waving his cigarette around. “I need sleep and have some business to take care of, so meet me at the bench out in front of the Seaside Hotel by 10 o’clock.” He didn’t add that this would be Vincent’s first test and that if he failed it, then Zane would leave without him. “Until then, go home, get some rest, and say your goodbyes.” That was really the best advice he could give. Zane tossed his cigarette and kept walking, making a beeline for the hotel just a few blocks down the road. He could practically hear the pillows calling his name. |

Vincent looked to Zane and listened to what he had to say. This wasn't what Vincent had planned but he did plan on leaving this place. If this was where he was going to be heading then he would play his part. Watching Pichu run around Vincent snapped his fingers and had her run back up his arm. If they were going to leave tomorrow that meant he could grab a whole bunch more supplies for cooking and stuff while out on the road. After checking his watch and setting a small alarm Vincent spoke with a light smile on his face and turning towards his road looking at his house in the not so far distance. "I'll be sure to meet you Zane, you can count on it. I'll handle a few things and get some more supplies. See you in the morning." Vincent started walking down his street heading home waving over his head. He knew tomorrow he would be leaving and just encase Zane was going to try something like his father usually did. He would be sure to get up early and be there early. Vincent had early mornings any way and despite what most would think of him Vincent worked hard every day and was use to working from sun rise to sun set. He wasn't lazy and was built to be a tough guy when times called for it. Though Zane would soon see that Vincent was someone he wouldn't have to really look out for. In any case Vincent hoped to be a big help if he could. Walking towards home Vincent started to look up at the sky and wonder just what would happen on this trip. Zane really wanted her back and from what he can tell there will be some dirty work involved. As long as no innocent Pokémon or people would be physically harmed and it was done for no reason everything would be fine. It was time to get out and experience this world and accept the good and the bad. "Lets go home Pichu we need to get a good shower in before leaving tomorrow and get some supplies from mom." Breaking out into a run Vincent was able to reach his house where he started to get ready for bed and start getting some things from his parents. It wasn't long before Vincent would set his clock after giving himself and his two Pokémon a bath. Setting it for 7 AM. Vincent would most likely do the usual and wake up five minutes a head of time like usual and relax in bed. After repacking he planned to head out and wait for Zane. Though for now he could finally get one last good nights sleep. Spread out on his bed with PIchu curled up on his stomach the two slept in wait for the next day. |
