PokéFiends |
|
PokéFiends is an open and expansive multi-region Pokémon roleplay that welcomes both canon and original characters. From the regions in the main games, the anime and side games, and even a bit more, you can travel anywhere. Be wary, a darkness lurks in the night, a sinister creature haunts the edges of the moonlight. Turmoil brews, traveler, so take your first step with caution. |
Four months ago, terror held the world in stand still. The attacks on both Saffron and Castelia have concluded... and despite the growing darkness, the people of the world band together to throw an event in the spirit of world unity and the courage to stand against this new foe.

The season is currently Spring. There winter snows have thawed and new growth springs up across the world. Periodically, chill remains in the air, but never for long does it hang about. |

So, okay. I've been away for awhile. But I haven't forgotten you, my babies. I have been working on ideas while I was away. (We all like ideas, right? Right?) I'm going to pan them out here (Harlem, show/relate the item system to Shiay, it needs her okay for me to implement it) so that you guys can comment and help build on them if you want. I'm going to put the smaller sections first, because the Item section ended up being... quite large. (Forgive mon typos. I'm working from a school computer (I hate IE) and it has no browser spell check. Yes, guys, I love you that much that I'm working from school. Not really. My professor gave us a walk and I needed to post something to prove I haven't just been sitting on my ass while I was away. (<-- Lie.)) Contests SO YOU PEOPLE WANT CONTESTS? What hard to please jerks you guys are. (I love you guys, really! ;w;! <3!) As Shiay said, we had thought about them. But PF is a big site, and they got shoved aside as we attended to other things and to life (more so in my case!) so, I apologize. The only problem I have with contests is that I just don't know a lot about them. I am not a contest person and neither is Shi. I know how they operate in the game, I have played them for shits and giggles, but it seems that it's likely we'd need to blend or fully use the anime's system for them for PF. And I'm blocked for that, because I haven't kept up with the anime since Ash defeated Whitney. So, lo and behold, we need help on these. It's a big part of Pokémon, and I want contests present somehow in at least the four main regions. Ideas? Got em? Post em. New Region South of the Orange Islands and Hoenn, where the climate begins to grow mild and then cold once more, a new Region has been settled. Two large islands, Albero and Rhume (based on Iceland and Greenland respectively) are what me and Shiay were plotting. I have a rough map sketched out, let me give you some rough details, and I'll try to finish the map around my NaNo. Albero: The northern, larger, island. There is a small temperate-jungle (not a rainforest, mind you, go to Fiore and OI for that!) at a northern peninsula, though it's likely only the size of Kanto's Viridian forest. A town lies at the end of the peninsula and it is Albero's northern most port town. South of the forest is the foot of Albero and Rhume's mountain chain, which hooks west and curves south down to Rhume itself going through the strait that divides the two islands. The majority of Albero is a type of plains, dotted with steely-grey rocks and plateaus. A river snakes through the Albero plain lands and feeds off in the east. A town lies a both the river head, in the mountains, and at the river foot, on the cost. Another number of towns are on the plains. On the east coast of Albero is a set of islands, where another town lies, as well as a crystal filled under-water cavern. Rhume is the smaller, southern island. Separated from Albero by twenty miles of ocean, with only the dotted tops of the underwater mountains to suggest they are even connected, Rhume is drastically different than it's northern sister. While the plains are present on the north, they eventually spread out into a scrub land and on the southern most part of Rhume, an outright tundra. The mountain chain cradles along the northern edge of the island and hooks down to it's southern most point. The league of the two islands lies at the peak of a snow blown mountain, the tallest in the region. The southern most point of Rhume is a town (a Gym town) that survives at the coldest part of Rhume due to the arctic volcanos found there. Should get you guys going on how it's going to be. Hope it fits everything you might (or might not) have been hoping for! We tried to fit in biomes that hadn't been done before (which is why, though I really wanted to, we avoided an outright jungle [83 We can always make another small region if I feel crazy again later]) so that's why it's arctic and scrub lands and temperate jungle (the jungles of Chile, for example). The concept is Greenland/Iceland based, credits to Shiay for that. I just came up with the idea for the new region, she added fuel to the fire. After that, I started exploring how to make the believable climates and ended up taking from the Falkland Islands and New Zeland as well as the aforementioned countries. ANY ideas, at this point, since I'e got the whole land mass more or less plotted out, are good and game to shoot my way. We don't want desert-y type stuff. Orre, thanks. When I say ideas, I mean stuff like the cities themselves (general themes to make them different) and the areas between where Pokémon might appear to make the routes different. The ideas can be rough. usually I can pick things up and a-go-go. Avoid city/town names if you can. And yes, yes. Gym Leaders will be original for this region, so anyone that missed out on our last original Gym Leader contest can have a chance and anyone that didn't get a slot in Orre can have a go for this region. (I am not sure, at the moment, if it's a half league or a full league. It will depend on the members we have upon the region's completion and if there is enough for a full league (8+4) or a half league (4+1)) Item System I've been trying to find a way to simplify this puppy almost since day one. And, short of us having a programmed one, which isn't likely to happen, and before anyone offers/goes "I have a friend that could", don't. If you want to offer, deliver. I don't want to sit around on a crappy system waiting for a programmed one that might never come. Make a prototype if you really can program, and show it to us. Otherwise, the point is null. Continuing. Simplification. I actually like the system we have now. It reflects the game quite well, I think, and I did put a lot of thought into how it should be built. But people tend to average at around 4-to-5-ish characters (I'm discluding me and Shiay in that, lol, we have like, way too many between us) and that makes/will make updating a real pain in the ass. The other woe is this. How many people using Items/Poké Balls out there even knew that there was a thread to tell the mods you had in the Trainer's Guide? I'm not coming down on you guys, Arceus no, it's as much our fault as anyone elses. And while I could tell you to go back and tell us what you had used, the flaw still stands. Eventually, the site will become too large for us to edit Data Posts silently. I'm not even sure if they have been in the month I was away, I was trying to do it while I was around, but. Eventually, the system will break because it relies on too many people posting in this thread saying they want this item or want to use this time here, etc. etc. I love my baby. The item system was a whole weekend of my life petered away copying and pasting image codes. But the thing is almost more of a hassle than it's worth. So. I'm suggesting editing it. (What? No. I'm not throwing it out. Sheeze!) It wouldn't be much different than it is now, thought the main differences are large. What I'm suggesting is a Data Post per PLAYER. One bag to encompass all a person's characters. Don't get no panties in wads yet. I'm still working on making it so it won't be (too?) abusable. I'll show you. The other difference would be the removal of item amounts and the RAISING in prices to balance this. What this means is: once you buy an Antidote, you have the ability to RP with an Antidote in any of your threads. The catch? It's more expensive than our current prices that reflect in-game price tags. (Prices would likely be 1.5-2 times higher than in-game prices, depending on the item in question. Lol. Antidotes won't cost you an arm and a leg, I promise.) The items to retain item amounts will be Balls. I've bounced the idea off of one person and that was likely the thing we came back to the most concerning abuse. I have to agree. And with that said, Balls would also retain their normal prices. The other type will be Valuable Items (Nuggets, Star Pieces, Shrooms, Etc.) as they're found at role play completion randomly and can be sold for big bucks. Berries, conversely, will not retain item amounts. Before, we would draw based on post amount. I'm thinking, now, we will likely still do the same, but raise the amount of posts required for us to draw multiple times. Why? Because they won't retain counts and eventually, through this method (because we would redraw if we drew a berry you already had on your Data Post) you would obtain all the berries. (And the Apricorns, because I'll finally shuffle them in when/if we do this system.) When you find an Apricorn, you'll be able to purchase the coresponding Ball. Key Items and achievements would still be by player and will be the only thing to remain in the posts we have currently, should this system get okayed and we switch over. (Some Key Items would likely get lowered in price.) Hold items would be listed for all characters on the member's new data post, along with any EV'd Pokémon. Hold Items, once purchased, could be attached to multiple character's Pokémon across a person's account. (I might limit the number of Pokémon a Hold Item can be on at a time, should I?) Repels will lose their lockage. It's a users choice to waste their time running if they want, and I don't see the point in keeping them locked any more. They were limited to avoid abuse, but no one has even used one yet and it's really up to a person to decide if they want to waste their time fast traveling like that. Boat tickets for outer region travel will be listed on the new Data Post. ~~~ I think I covered it all. Now, yes. I know, this system seems more flawed than our current one (>: our current one actually reflects the games almost to a T, if I can toot my horn a bit) but I have an argument against the "it should be like the games." If this was a place to be exactly like the games, then I would just go play the games. This place is a place to RP and to have fun, where story is valued more than actual game mechanics and where fun should, really, be the main focus. Right now? There's way too much updating, tallying, "making sure I can buy this item", going on. It should be about fun, right? If we could sacrifice the item amounts and the million backpacks spanning across our site, I think it would likely be more fun. It should be about unlocking the use of an item completely, and not about trying to scrounge the money to get just five of them. Threads take considerably longer to complete here than a battle in game does. Ten days vs. ten minutes. It's a big difference. I think the system would likely balance itself. The prices would still be there as would the tally of money for each post you make. I don't think people would abuse it as much as it seems it could be. Most people on this board seem to value a good story over a win or loss in battle, which is why I love our members. So yes, I think this new system could be abusable, but I don't think it will be. *steps off her soap box* Input? |

Grr, you have to bring up programming before I even get to my programming classes...haha... but, ideas for a toooown~~ A big fun-city 8D Like with lights, game stands (ring toss, water-balloon shooting, wack-a-diglett, etc.), prize stands (plushe/novelty item vendors), snack vendors (tasty fair foods, num), CONTEST HALL (teh evil), and, and, and...rides. Oh, and Buneary Races (brownie points to anyone who catches that reference) There can be a Gym, but...tha's up to you <.< I could design a map, if you like, as I still have MS Paint (and access to looots of sprites, not just Pokémon, haha!) and it would help lessen your busy load (if only by a bit). I won't name it, though 8D |

Sorry, kicking Harley off the computer for this. I don't care what he says at the moment, since this is my business and I did go over it when he was viewing the thread, I still do have my right to be inputting what I can into this. And then I can go off and be back on my merry-airy hiatus and play games and draw all day with the occasional sitting down and getting at my school studies. Harley and I are going to raid Fry's sometime this week and buy all the Pokémon anime DVDs when we can. Yes, we're going to watch them all, no matter how long it fucking takes. We're going to take the anime and take a lot of the things from there, list them and see what we can work with from there for contests. That, and I'm going to start taking Contests more seriously on my Diamond since I have nothing else to be doing. I'll keep playing till I clear all different appeals and... whatever they're called (Cool, Tough, Smart, Beauty and Cute). Also, thanks for the new information on the new region. I'll try sketching what I can based on what I've read. Though... maybe you should get the maps uploaded first before I start getting rough sketches of areas scanned in and posted. My mind's been everywhere these past couple of days. XD Concerning items and how they'll work. I understand giving a player one immense bag of stuff to split between their characters. I'm not sure how this'll be more simple, though, that's just me. I quite like the item system that we have currently, and it would be a pain to see it go (in a sense). Not to mention I would be silently raging for all the times that I've had to go back and edit those darn things. >: Though... maybe an example of how they would work and seeing it first hand would be best before I give my final thoughts on it. We should probably have a discussion on it in the Staff Lounge or something (or make a Staff Lounge, first -- since the other one is an Admin's Lounge). Yes, Harley, you can have the computer back D< |

hmm well i used to be great at in game contests. Those things were hard though. Anyways, though this is biased for obvious reasons, i really think that the new system will work and have the Pokémon available in this new region been decided? |

@Bori Anything you want to do is welcomed. I only have a few town ideas, and I like the one you have going (considering the only other festive type town is way up in Orre D8). </3 I wish we knew someone that could program. I would abuse that like crack. @Shiay
Hence why I want to simplify it. If we removed the item counts, it would mean they only have to by an item once, thus reducing how many times we have to update, and removing all together the fact that members have to alert us when they use an item (which hasn't been happening in the first place). It would be simpler in that money would all be collected on one profile, instead of many. All tallies would feed to one place per an account. The only thing that would be different for each character would be Badges and Key Items. I'll make a mock up of it when I can. I have 2,000 more to write today. >': @Xana No, they have not been decided. Though they will likely reflect the biomes and hopefully be diverse as much as we can make them to make it more or less like a real region. We did decide that some of them will have nifty unusual colorings (think Orange Islands and West/East Shellos) though. |

Yay, something for teh Bori to do in class tomorrow~~ I'll nag at my uncle to grab the laptop before he leaves to pick me up. Maybe I can find a program and tamper with it until I get my programming classes scheduled in. **proud as hell she's going to be a programmer** |
