Banette [Male]: Banette was given to Leonard by Melissa when they first met in Mt. Pyre. He is shown to be incredibly playful and friendly which allowed for his trainer to get over his fear of ghosts. Despite being the oldest to be with his trainer, he is not that great when it comes to battles. Leonard believes that the Marionette Pokémon is a perfect example of how Ghost-type Pokémon are benevolent instead of malevolent in nature. Ability: Insomnia Moves: Shadow Ball, Screech, Will-O-Wisp, Night Shade, Shadow Sneak, Feint Attack Dusclops [Male]: Dusclops was caught by Leonard during one of his many visits to Mt. Pyre. Unlike Banette, Dusclops is more serious and protective of his trainer. He is also considered by his trainer to be the strongest battler on the team. Leonard is fascinated by the mystery behind the Beckon Pokémon and hopes to discover his origins soon. Ability: Pressure Moves: Shadow Punch, Mean Look, Foresight, Astonish, Ice Punch, Night Shade, Pursuit Spiritomb [Female]: Spiritomb's keystone was discovered and caught by Leonard during his time spent in Sinnoh on his business as a Pokémon Professor. She is the most powerful Pokémon on Leonard's team but never listens to the orders of her trainer. This leads to Dusclops being the main fighter on the team. Despite her hatred of him, Leonard keeps the Forbidden Pokémon around to study her keystone. Ability: Pressure Moves: Dark Pulse, Ominous Wind, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Feint Attack, Confuse Ray, Shadow Sneak, Pursuit Rotom: Rotom was caught by Leonard when he investigated the Old Chateau for paranormal activity. Rotom chooses to calculate how it will battle ahead of time and hates form time. Although a prankster at time, it chooses not to prank its trainer due to his intelligence, which Rotom respects. Leonard is fascinated by the Plasma Pokémon's ability to possess inanimate objects and believes that could be a trait shared by all Ghost-type Pokémon. Ability: Levitate Moves: Discharge, Thunder Wave, Charge, Thunder Shock, Shockwave Golett: Golett was caught by Leonard during his time spent researching in Unova. It is the newest member on his team and is known to being very scared of anything new. Still, it has the desire to protect its trainer despite not being as strong as Dusclops or Spiritomb. Leonard believes that the Automaton Pokémon was one of the first Ghost-type Pokémon in ancient history and could be key to discovering the origins of other ghosts. Ability: Iron Fist Moves: Mud Slap, Defense Curl, Mega Punch, Iron Defense, Shadow Punch

Leonard stands at five feet and nine inches and weighs around 135 pounds with a slim figure. He has slick, jet black hair that is cut short. He has blue eyes and wears a pair of bifocal eyeglasses to help with his vision. He carries a satchel with him wherever he goes which carries his research and Poke Balls which contain his Ghost-type Pokémon.
Leonard is usually seen wearing a white lab coat that reaches down to his black boots to show his status as a Pokémon Professor and scientist. Underneath the lab coat he wears a violet collared shirt that buttons up and is tucked into a pair of blue jeans. On his left ring finger is his wedding ring: a small, golden band with Melissa's name inscribed into it.

Leonard is very outgoing whether it involves research or meeting new people. Despite wanting to meet new people, he is shown to be socially awkward when discussing topics outside of his line of research. Despite wanted to talk about his line of work, he resists the urge to bring it up without being set up for it to be polite. He is shown to be humble and does not brag about his occupation or intelligence.
Leonard is shown to lack any fear after his time spent in Mt. Pyre and rushes into danger without a plan if it furthers his research. Yet, this kind of bravery makes it impossible to turn away from threats that could be lethal. He is ultimately obsessed with his research, leading him to shut away friends, family and even loved ones. Although he does miss them, he knows that his research may be what it takes to go down in history.

Leonard was born in Lilycove City to Ray and Adella Patel, two scientists who worked at the Weather Institute. As a child, his parents took turns working at the institute and homeschooling their son, thinking that it would be best for them to teach him instead of a school. His intelligence grew quickly but he lacked friends. It was around his early teens when both his parents trusted him enough to leave him at home. So, Leonard started to sneak out in order to make friends. It was when he was around 14 when he was dared to travel to the top of Mt. Pyre, which he was told was haunted. Believing ghosts to be myths, he gladly accepted the dare.
At Mt. Pyre, Leonard quickly discovered how wrong he was wrong. The Ghost-type Pokémon were quick to take notice of an adolescent who dared climb higher and started to haunt him. Although he was scared, he wanted to impress his friends and kept moving forward. Fortunately, on the third floor, Leonard met Melissa, a young girl around his age who befriended the ghosts in the tower. She told him that the Pokémon were not as scary when they are your friend and gave him a Poké Ball containing Shuppet. Although he never made it to the top, he did make frequent visits to meet with Melissa. Over the years, their friendship turned into love and he proposed to her near the peak of the tower when he was 20.
Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved into an apartment in Mauville City. Seeking to take a path similar to his parents, Leonard started studying to become a Pokémon Professor. When selecting what he wished to study, he decided to study Ghost-type Pokémon, specifically their origins. Melissa was somewhat against this, enjoying the mystery of ghosts, but supported her husband regardless. After four years of studying and researching many theories regarding Ghost Pokémon, he gained the official credentials to become a Pokémon Professor.
With his new status, Leonard quickly began mapping out his travels. Over the next two years, he traveled to various spots of paranormal activity as well as kept an open ear for supernatural rumors. To help with his research, he captured different Ghost-type Pokémon for his team. Yet, as time progressed, his visits back to Mauville slowly dwindled and his only form of contact with Melissa was an occasional phone call. Despite growing apart from her, he still loved his wife. Yet, Leonard will not rest until he goes down in history as the man who solved the many mysteries behind the Ghost-type Pokémon.

Leonard looked at the tower before him, fondly remembering his time spent in Mt. Pyre. The Pokémon Tower was its counterpart in Kanto and had similar paranormal activity. It served as a graveyard for Pokémon, but there was apparently a radio station on the top floor. The station called him in to help investigate the Ghost-type Pokémon in the tower. Asides from the research, he would also be given a chance to speak on air about his most recent study.
The radio tower in the tower was a perfect example of how Ghost-type Pokémon could be benevolent. Although, leaving humans alone is not really a sign of good but rather not caring about them. At least they were not malevolent spirits who would hinder the radio station. Regardless, what he learned here would go onto further his research. Were the ghosts the spirits of past humans or Pokémon? Or were they an entirely different being? He entered the tower, determined to find out the answer one way or another.
