October 11th, 21:47 JST Joint Base Oceanus, B Dock The transport that had brought them back had been one of the first handful to head back to Seafoam's waters from Unovan territory. Hunter-Two had been on the ship due to medical needs and because the squad's primary mission had been fulfilled. It also helped that Plasma had all but disintegrated in Castelia after the block on radio had been lifted. It also helped that this particular vessel was equipped with Seafoam's upgraded medical wing, complete with Misriah technologies built into it. Which meant that Hunter-Two could be quite sure of Sheraden's safety and continued health, now that he was in the hands of wonderful medical staff. Hunter-Two had also been assured that they would be informed of which hospital their squad mate would be transferred to after the vessel docked at Oceanus. Kayzen breathed an uneasy sigh as her foot set down upon the grounds of Oceanus and she cast a glance back to the ship behind her. She wanted nothing more than to be debriefed so she could go back to her dorm and sleep. Not that she hadn't slept on the ship, but the fact of the matter was that any sleep she had managed had not been comforting... and most of the voyage home she had just forced herself to stay away. Still, she hadn't walked more than two or three yards before a man approached her and Hunter-Two. He looked mildly irate, but it might have just been because he had been corralled into delivering a menial message. "Ensign Hudson?" Kayzen nodded to him silently. "I've been instructed to inform you that you and the rest of your squad will be debriefed in the Navy Operations HQ. You're to meet Commander Nelson there immediately." The man turned on a heel and left and Kayzen watched him go for a moment before glancing to Reilly and Vincent with a shrug. "Let's get this over with so we can unwind, yeah?" --- October 12th, 03:24 JST Joint Base Oceanus Five hours and thirty-seven minutes later, Hunter-Two was finally released and off-duty. If Kayzen had had a headache before the After Action Report, by now she had a full blown migraine. So when she stepped out of the restricted area they had been in and was greeted by two Navy MPs who stopped in front of her, shge was understandably irate and frustrated beyond measure. One of them opened their mouths but she cut him off. "If you're not about to tell me I can go home and sleep, you'd best turn on your heel and walk the other direction." The man in front of her looked cowed at the remark and shut his mouth, but they stood strong. The other man with him chuckled a bit and slapped his companion on the shoulder. Then he glanced at Kayzen and spoke. "You've got a package, and it requires your attention. And unless you want to be responsible for the guy with it being held here over night while you get some z's, I'm afraid you will have to handle this before leave. It's on the way out anyways, ma'am." Kayzen concealed visible rage, and the fact that she would punch the first guy in the face is the thought it wouldn't get her restrained by the military police from her troubles and followed them in exasperation. Her attitude was alleviated, however, when they reached a small unused breifing room where a rather scared looking Fed Ex employee was seated and shouldered by two more MPs. Kayzen's personality took a turn for the curious. "All this for a package?" "You should see the address." That caught her attention and she walked towards the man. The package in his lap was a square wooden box with FRAGILE plastered all over it in red. And then another tag that caught the girls attention. LIVE CARGO. What the actual fuck? The Fed Ex guy looked up to her, his voice quivering with tentative fear as he asked, "Are you Mrs. Hudson?" "Mrs. Hudson was my grandmother. I'm Kayzen Hudson." The man stood... slowly. The MP to his right reluctantly released his grip from the man's hand. Kayzen could see wrinkles in the mailman's uniform. The man held out a clipboard and a pen to her. "Sorry for the inconvenience. I was instructed at the gates it could only be delivered to you. ...That was three hours ago. They wouldn't let me leave when they saw the address and I can't leave the package unaccompanied because of the labeling. Sign here." The girl was too tired to listen to the Fed Ex employee's rambling and she looked down at pad in front of her. She signed swiftly in an illegible scrawl. Then she noticed the address. "Oh." China. Probably from Sae Han. Still, the man handed her the package and all to soon she was left alone, or with whatever members of Hunter-Two had accompanied her, all four MPs escorted the man from the room and away from her. The girl looked down at the package... and released the windiest sigh she could manage. "Why now?" |

The list of military events Vince didn't like was not inconsiderable. Formal functions, for example, were a particular brand of suck. Shitty food was another. Lack of sleep was no fun, but fairly low on the list if truth be told. If there was one thing he absolutely could not stand, though, it was being on a ship at sea. The further from deep water Vince was, the happier he was. Being on a floating piece of metal in the middle of extremely deep water, and he suddenly became something akin to a locomotive: not always moving but trailing smoke wherever he went. This was how he entered Hunter-Two's AAR. As he had countless times before, he sat through the damn thing, commented where applicable, and generally wished it would end. When it finally did, almost six hours later, he was relieved. Sore and exhausted, he just wanted to sleep for a few days or so and recover. That desire was pushed to the backburner as the team came face to face with a pair of MPs. Vince looked between the pair and the LT as they spoke, noting her irritation. "Ma'am, I know they're annoying as hell, but maybe try just a little less belligerence next time?" he suggested, leaning in close so she could hear his whisper as they followed the MPs. "Leave that kind of shit to me." Smiling, he gave a light squeeze on her shoulder as they entered another briefing room. He stood toward the back of the room as she handled the business. When the MPs and deliveryman left, he strode forward and came to sand next to her. He gave a whistle and dropped what was left of the cigarette between his fingers to the deck, stomping it out as he lit another. "China, huh? That's gonna suck for you to explain," he remarked with just the tiniest hint of mirth. He gave her something approaching a sympathetic look and asked, "What the hell's in there?" |

Kayzen hadn't offered much of a word when Vincent leaned in to try to quell her irritation. Partly because she hadn't had time between getting the package to respond, and partly because she didn't want to snap at him. Vincent definitely didn't deserve being on the end of her irritation, and she was definitely afraid he might be if she tried to reply to the comment. So all she had offered him at the time was a nod and an illy forced half-smile. Still, getting the package, and with it, knowledge that it was probably from a friend so far removed from anything to do with the military had turned her surface thoughts thankfully away from her job. "China, huh? That's gonna suck for you to explain. What the hell's in there?" Kayzen sighed and shook her head and yanked a chair, one of those folding plastic kinds, over and set the crate on it. "When I was in college, I took this course over summer one year. We went to Mongolia to help with a fossil dig site. That's how I got Bulwark. At the end of term we each got a fossil. Anyways, I made friends with a woman there, her name was Sae Han. She's Chinese. We've had on and off communications since which has never been much a problem because she lives in Mongolia most of the time." Kayzen squatted down and looked over the package as she spoke. The lid was secured with one of those melded plastic bindings that had to be cut off, so she reached into her pack pocket and withdrew her pocket knife and began snapping the bindings. "I don't know what possessed her to mail from her parent's home address, though. God, you don't know how hard it was getting clearance just having been to Mongolia. Or explaining a Chinese friendship, like how does the government even know about that." The last binding popped loose and Kayzen stood and pulled the lid off. The musty smell of straw filled her nostrils and she looked down. Gently, she dug into the straw with her finger tips and began to clear it aside. There was a note, and Kayzen picked it up... to reveal a faint patch of color. The girl's face paled and she brushed the straw aside further to uncover three eggs. All of them were different colors and patterns. One was brown with black swatches over it and small specks of vanilla color at the top. The other two were both solid colored, one also brown and the other blue, both with stripes and bands of black. The eggs shifted gently, as a child might in slumber. "Oh fucking... Sae why." Kayzen was frowning quite visibly now and she unfolded the letter and read silently.
Kayzen looked up at Vincent with almost near exact motion and expression as Dr. Alan Grant and every bit of real fear. "They bred raptors." Edited by MizuJakkaru, Jun 20 2013, 09:26 PM.

Nodding at the Lieutenant's explanation, Vince inspected the box. It was a simple matter, really, but he had no doubt that the higher ups would make a mess of it. His own curiosity got the better of him as she lifted the lid off the crate. Within were eggs of some sort. Vince leaned closer for a better view of them while Kayzen read the enclosed letter. He smiled as they shifted, obviously alive. Whatever they were, they would hatch soon. He looked at Kayzen as she lifted her own gaze away from the letter and his smile died. Her face was a mask of terror once again, bearing far too much resemblance to how she looked just before the team had jumped into Castelia. And then she said the words. Three words that sent a chill down Vince's spine and lit his imagination ablaze with potential. "They bred..." The question succumbed to a bout of hysterical laughter. He'd seen the movies countless times - even the comparatively shitty third one - and had never failed to be captivated by the animals. "This is great!" he nearly shouted. "Can you imagine them on a battlefield?" He picked up one of the eggs and held it like the priceless treasure that it was. "The perfect little evil bastard guerrilla soldiers, that's what they'll be." |

There was a moment of quiet from the Ensign at Vincent's reaction. A beat, if you will, while she stared slightly open mouthed at the man's sudden excitement over the eggs. She wasn't sure he was sane anymore, but then, he'd never been around the creatures like she had. It wasn't like the movies. It was worse than the movies... primarily because they were smaller can could literally get into everything. They were also smarter than the raptors from those movies. Kayzen slowly folded the letter in her hands back into its original form. She tucked it gently into the envelope and then folded it half ways and tucked it into her pocket on her pants. She foresaw only one shining ray of hope at the end of this tunnel. She knew for a fact that they imprinted on the people they were born around... if they could get them to imprint on Vincent and the rest of the squad, hopefully they could become what Vincent was larking on about. Maybe. Probably...? The girl sighed gustily. "Miles, I've been around them before... and while they scare the living day lights out of me... you might be able to get them to imprint on you and, by extension, the rest of the squad. If we can do that, they'll be viable allies. ...Maybe." Kayzen then gestured to the box. "Take another one. Two will fill out your team, won't it? I know someone who can find the other a good home. Surely a load toad or AMMO grunt will want one, because if you're going to raise two, I certainly don't want to raise the other." |

The look he received took some of the wind out of Vince's sails at Kayzen's look. Then again, being looked at like one has grown a new phallus-shaped organ out of one's forehead will do that. It turned out to be a fair trade, however, when she started in on him raising two of the animals. It would not be inaccurate to say that he gave her much the same look. "Wait, you want me to what now?" he asked, incredulous. "Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the opportunity, but they're yours." He gently replaced the egg in the straw. When he looked back at her, he saw the certainty, tempered with a healthy dose of fear. "You really think I can do it? I've killed cacti before," he admitted, only half joking. The reality, though, was that he hoped she said yes. Besides, with Luke to help out, it wouldn't be that hard to keep the little ones in check, right? |

""Yes." The reply was simple, but, to be honest, Vincent had faced worse than what was going to amount to a very vicious puppy for the first few months. If the beasties imprinted on him and respected the squad because of it, the girl had no reason to believe that they wouldn't be vicious towards, well, her teammates. If they didn't? Well. That was nothing a forever locked in a Poké Ball spiel couldn't fix. "Just make sure you're there when they're born and that you're there to introduce us. So long as you give them pack mentality and teach them you're the boss, Boss, then nothing will make them betray you. As for the cacti, well. These things won't let them kill you. In the sense of... if they get hungry and you forget to feed them, they'll remind you. With teeth." She paused, tilted her head and shrugged before adding, "And Sae Han sent these to me with the knowledge that I'm in the military. She probably sent them because she thinks they'd be useful in my job. Granted, all she knows is that I was Navy EOD, so I don't know why she thought raptors running around while I tried to defuse things would be a good idea... but... the point of the matter is that they're mine to distribute. ...So, yes, I think you could raise them. Please. Take one. Two. All of them." Edited by MizuJakkaru, Jun 29 2013, 07:19 PM.

Staring at the eggs as Kayzen laid out the facts and how the whole situation would work, Vince couldn't help but feel anxious. He'd dealt with difficult Pokémon before; Patience was proof enough of that. If he could make a mean bitch like her take his orders, a pair of pack-hunters raised from the egg shouldn't prove any more difficult. With one final pull on his cigarette, Vince dropped the butt to the deck and stomped it out. "Well I'll be damned if you aren't convincing, that's for sure," he admitted as he turned back to her. "Alright, Pockets. You've got yourself a deal." There was one tiny detail he had to straighten out first, though. "Now, I remember reading about these things when they were first resurrected, but the truth is I don't know shit. You spent time with living ones though. Anything I should know before I get started raising my very own angry little saurian hit squad?" |

Kayzen grimaced at the words. "'Spent time with' is putting it nicely." But she thought for a moment as she nestled the three eggs into the straw to keep them warm. "Well. I'll tell you one thing, they eat a lot. More so than other baby Pokémon, I mean. Bastion had a voracious appetite, and I've raised most of my team from baby age." She thought a moment more then added, "and I'll say this just from having a lot of puppies around when I was a kid. Don't teach them to play bite with your hands. Just sticks or toys or balls or something. The last thing you want to teach them is that biting you is a game." The girl smiled, a tired expression, though not half-hearted. "And I'll help you, I just don't want to be, you know, their mom when I have what they consider their primary prey on my team already." Kayzen lifted the box gently and wondered the best way to split off the third egg so she could take it to someone else to care for. She'd need to get another box. "I need to split off the third egg, but I don't want it to get cold. I don't carry shoe boxes in my kit, either. Ideas?" Edited by MizuJakkaru, Jun 29 2013, 08:29 PM.

Ticking the items she listed on his fingers, Vince made his mental notes aloud. "Ok, so lots of food, hands are not chewtoys, and don't let them eat anyone important," he smiled as the list came to a close. "Easy enough. Just have to teach them that Bastion and all the others are part of their pack, right?" His confidence in this endeavor was growing by the second. He would have to get in touch with some of his friends back in the US. He had met more than a few K9 handlers during his service. Their animals had all been loyal and kind to their handlers, but an absolute nightmare once given the command to let loose. His newly-acquired raptors would need the same aspect: gentle to friends, hell on two legs to their enemies. Vince came back to the present at Kayzen's question. The idea wasn't long in forming, but it did so fully developed. "Stay here, I've got an idea," he told her before taking off at a run back to where the team had stored their gear. It was easy to find his own and grab what he needed, and it was only a matter of minutes until he was back where he had left Kayzen. He came to a stop next to her and held up his prize: a helmet. "I hope we never stop finding uses for these things," he commented as he scooped out a generous handful of straw from within the crate and piled it inside the helmet. Two of the eggs followed. "Problem solved, problem staying solved." |

Kayzen evened out the straw once the other two eggs were taken... and noticed that Vincent had taken both of the brown specimens. Good on him, he'd get a male and female pair that way, if she could judge the markings correctly. The girl then situated the lid back on top of the box she was holding and looked back at Vincent to say something. But she was interrupted by one of the biggest most well earned yawns she'd ever had in her life. "Okay. I was gonna say when they start to get their feet it'd be hilarity to introduce them to the squad room, but now all I want to do is curl up in my own bed for about the next week. We're good now, right?" |

Laughing, Vince put a hand on Kayzen's shoulder in what he hoped she would take as a reassuring manner. "Yeah, I'd say we're good," he assured her with a laugh. "Get a few hours of sleep. I'll let you know if anything huge comes up." He turned to make his way back toward one of the observation decks, where he could at least get fresh air - even if it came at the cost of risking sea sickness. As he started off, he remembered what he had followed her for in the first place. "Hey, Pockets," he called, turning back to the young woman. "You did a damn fine job out there. We're lucky to have you on the team. Now get the fuck out of here before I drag you to your bunk myself." A few minutes later, he was standing on the observation deck, the helmet with its eggs tucked under an arm and a cigarette between his lips. The team had done spectacularly, truth be told. He hadn't expected them to come together so quickly, or so well. The fact that they did spoke volumes about their training and the individuals themselves. When Hunter-Two had first been assembled, Vince had worried. He had lost his last team with the US military. If it had happened again... Vince shook his head to banish the thought. It wouldn't. Not this time. Alone with his eggs and his ghosts, Vince flicked the cigarette butt into the sea and lit another. |

Kayzen gave him a smile in return at his laughter, knowing she must look weary at the moment. As Vincent turned away, the girl began to make her way out as well, until his call came and she shifted, turning halfway back and looking at him. The words caused a feeling to rise in her chest as he said them. Not a fluttering or faint of heart or any such silly nonsense kind of feeling, but that warmth or tingling that one felt when they were a mixture of embarrassed and praised and accepted. That tingle of accomplishment someone got when they realized they had lived up to someone's expectations... and just how much it had meant to live up to them in the first place. She groped about in her mind for words, thanks, to say in return, but she opened her mouth and found that her throat was tightened to the point she was mute. She swallowed, nodded in respond to him and managed to say a simple humble, "Thanks." Kayzen wasn't sure if the word quite did him justice, and she prayed the state of her voice when she said it got it across. She turned her head in that kind of jerking motion that suggested she was not sure where to let her eyes settle and she nodded again. She swallowed to loosen her throat more and spoke. "You bunk down soon too, Miles." With that, she walked off as Vincent made his way to get some fresh air. The walk back to her apartment was a long one, but something about the crispness of the air and how clear it was tonight, and something about the past few days and all the trials and challenges she and the rest of her team, people she loved now like family... though she had known them only a short while, made that walk an earned one. |
