Rock beats Scissors.
How long does it take you from coming up with the storyboards to the final production of each comic?

HA!
It's all smoke and mirrors. Ape Entertainment currently has only 5 full time employees. We just all work really, really, really hard and ALL the time.

The hard part is to remember to STOP working and do other things... like play Pocket God. :)

Each page of the book takes about 8-10 hours to produce and goes through the hands of about 8-10 people on average-
writer, editor, penciller, inker, colorist, letterer and Dave/Allan at Bolt for approval at most stages.

It's a ton of work and a ton of people for that $0.99. :)

Hello David! Thanks for coming along! :)

How did you become the CEO of Ape Entertainment, did you set up the company yourself?
Yep. Ape Entertainment was a company I formed with my business partner, Brent Erwin, about 6 years ago. When we started, we had about $2 to our names, a lot of know-how, and a WHOLE lot of stubborness.

Today, Ape Entertainment is owned by myself, Brent, and a group of amazing investors who support everything we do 100%.

I feel very lucky to have such great partners/friends to work with getting to do what I love to do- CREATE STORIES!

Sounds like you've had to do a lot to get where you are today.

Who comes up with the plots of the comics? Bolt Creative or Ape?

The initial storyline was plotted by myself along with writer Jason M. Burns. I was also responsible for assembling the art team. Naturally, we had lots of input and feedback from Bolt and they also had a general idea of what the personalities of the 6 pygmies were like from the start. After the GEM OF LIFE storyline, Bolt started getting more involved with the plot and, now, they handle most of the plotting with Jason. I have been relegated to cheerleader. :)

One of the reasons for the comics success is the great partnership we have with everyone at Bolt. They really care about the comic and about creating stories that they think their fans will love. We've got plans up to issue #25 and beyond at this point and as long as the fans keep buying the book, we will keep making them!

Let's see what I can tease...

There are ghosts in them there hills.
We haven't really learned much about Doobie or Klak...
The girls aren't going anywhere.
Newbie is not done.
A pygmy will DIE (and that is more significant than you might think at first).

On the non-creative side:
We are almost finished with a complete re-design of the Comic App. The new app is going to be super sweet and has everything needed to accomodate the large number of issues we will have by the end of this year and beyond.
Pygmy Peril #13 is out shortly and the winner of the KLIKS SIX challenge is announced!!!

Whats the story behind the name of the company?
A famous comic editor, Julius Schwartz, long ago said (and I'm paraphrasing) that sales on any comic with a gorilla on the cover double.

So, we named our company APE Entertainment and I created a logo that guaranteed that every book we do has as gorilla on the cover. Just one of those internal jokes that still makes me giggle occasionally.

Plus, having a company name that started with an 'A' put us in front of the big distributor catalogs.

We had all sorts of submissions for KLIK SIX- Art, fan fic, cupcakes, clay models, you name it! I won't spoil who the winner is but I think we got it right.

Anyone have ideas for the next contest?

You could do a contest where people can submit an idea for a single pocket god comic and the best one gets made.

Mostly Jason M. Burns, the writer... unless you like them. If you like them, then I wrote them.
:D

Besides Pocket God, do you already, or intend to, create other comics?

Maybe a one-page story. Continuity in Pocket God is very tight and almost everything we do in each issue has a purpose and a reason and will have repercussions in later issues.

One-page story ideas. Best one wins. I like it. Maybe the winner gets the original piece of art? What do you all think?

That'd be cool, though it could become too much like Klik's Six

Thanks for answering our questions though :D I'm sure you are a busy person!

Apart from releasing new comics on the iOS application, do you have any plans to extend the Pocket God Comic franchise? Maybe publish box sets for retailers, etc?

LOL.
Check our website- http://www.apecomics.com for stuff we do.
Kung Fu Panda, Penguins of Madagascar, Strawberry Shortcake, Casper the Ghost, Shrek, Megamind, Puss In Boots, Richie Rich and, launched... CUT THE ROPE!

And that's not even touching our original stuff we create in-house!

We are very, very, very busy kids.
