"...Hi, yes, I have a problem that I need some help with...Yes, that's right...Okay, I understand that, but see, I was explicitly told that I would have power by the time I arrived." Elisha switched her phone from one leather-gloved hand to the other. She pushed her hair away from her face and leaned an elbow on the table with a sigh. "Okay, but I was promised that I would have the power turned on today...Look, I hear what you're telling me, but I was told that it didn't have to be on Friday, that it could be activated on Saturday." Another short sigh, and she pressed her fingers to her temples. "There has to be someone there - just one person in the entire building. I mean, it's just a switch. All it needs to do is be flipped." There was a clear tone of bottled up agitation in her voice, that sense that she was being careful to keep her tone neutral and relatively pleasant. Her shoulders were tense, her face tight, and she was bent forward stiffly in her seat. She didn't look quite as haggard as she felt, though. Her long hair had several flyaways in the breeze and it draped around her like a curtain, but it wasn't unkempt. Her sweatshirt and jeans weren't nearly as wrinkled or frumpy as they felt after her long morning drive. Her hunger and fatigue...yeah, that was real. "Seriously? There isn't a single person on the premises who can get inside? Not even you?...Right. Of course not...Yeah, okay, thanks...Thanks. Bye." She snapped the phone shut and let her hand drop with it to the table's surface. "Your roast beef sandwich and French onion soup, miss?" A young waitress timidly approached with a black tray bearing the simple items, taking note of her customer's mood. "Oh, yes, thank you." The sight of her order made Elisha's shoulders deflate, her exasperation giving way to the full force of just how hungry and tired she really felt. Trail mix and a bagel with cream cheese and lox just didn't cut it after six whole hours. "Um, hold on." There were no less than five maps on the table, two of them unfolded partway, and she hurried to clear them off without knocking over her coffee. The waitress set her food down and, with the assurance that she didn't need anything else, retreated back into the cafe, leaving Elisha to her meal on the terrace. Luckily it wasn't so cold a day that eating outside was impractical, but the hot food helped. Only a couple other tables around her were occupied, and she tried to let the quiet atmosphere calm her down and make her forget about her new apartment's lack of electricity. Slipping her gloves off and setting them aside, she eagerly sampled her lunch. Edited by Cheshirewocky, Jan 24 2013, 23:50.

| Falque | Jan 25 2013, 00:11 Post #2 |

Anxiety could only stave off the effects of hunger for so long. Whatever ill fortune brought Falque to downtown Penngrove to begin with, it now led them to endure a missed breakfast and an eager desire to get something in their stomach. Perhaps waking up late was not the right thing to do when Falque had to be at a conservatory early morning, and about to spend several hours staring at sheet music. It almost wasn't...no, it wasn't worth it. The kid tugged their winter coat closer against their body. It wasn't that cold out, but a lot of Falque's wardrobe was more suited to Canada, and so when they put on winter gear, it was usually fairly heavy. At least in terms of coats. The pants and dress shoes didn't do much against the cold, but Falque was used to it. The blouse underneath the coat was rather thing, but the coat itself was quite thick, lined with white fur along the colour that blended with the albino's hair. It was distinctly feminine, the pinkish coat. To their terror, Falque had never really been this far from the campus by themselves. Falque didn't recognize the cafe, and certainly didn't recognize anyone inside it. Falque already missed the last time they ate out, with Evy. Even if the girl had encountered someone perhaps...a little more interesting than Falque, it was at least easy on the nerves. Now they were alone, and though the waitress said “Hi” Falque hardly managed much more than a little whimper and crooked attempt of a brief smile. Falque rushed to find a seat, at an empty table adjacent to Elisha's map-ridden platform. “May I take your order?” The waitress was already at Falque's table, and the kid nearly gave themselves whiplash turning from Elisha's maps to the waitress' eyes. “Uh uhm,” Falque looked to Elisha's food, noticing the onion soup in particular. They looked back at the waitress and pointed at Elisha's dish. “That...?” Though bemused, the waitress did her best to be courteous. “Great choice! Would you like something to drink with that?” “Water...” “Coming right up.” Falque sighed, left alone to their own brain. Solitude was a condition they long since came to manage, but it did wear Falque down at times. In particular, it made them curious. Falque's eyes went back to Elisha's maps, nearly staring at them at this point. Their lips parted a little, Falque's main functions geared towards the imagination and curiosity of what Elisha was doing with all those maps. Maybe she was some city planner. |

Elisha glanced up when the sound of quick, anxious footsteps caught her attention. What she saw was an albino girl nervously rush to claim a seat at the table near hers and jump when the waitress tried to take her order. There was squirming and stuttering, a helpless shifting of eyes until she noticed Elisha's bowl of soup and latched onto it as her only response. The waitress was kind enough not to give the girl any strange looks and soon left her to some peace while the food was prepared. Elisha didn't so much as flinch the entire time, simply taking another sip of hot soup and bite of her sandwich as she discreetly watched the exchange. Then the girl's eyes wandered back to her table again. Ah, her maps. It was becoming so standard for her to just work around them that they were easy to forget at times. Elisha brushed the crumbs off her fingers and picked up her tea. "French onion," she said softly, waiting to get the girl's attention before she explained. "The soup. It's French onion. Just so you know what you're getting." She gave a small, kind smile to allay any jitters or stuttering that started up, her own relaxed posture contrasting the bundle of nerves. The kid certainly seemed shy, or maybe she was just hungry, too. The world became a wondrous place when one's stomach stopped being empty. Elisha nodded slightly down to her maps, the object of the kid's curiosity. The one unfolded showed an overhead of the downtown area where they were, with several street paths marked in red pen and a few establishments circled. One happened to be the very cafe in which they sat. "I'm new in town and have a horrible sense of direction, hence the excessive planning. I'm Elisha, by the way." |

Falque just stared, at first. The name of the soup wasn't much of a change in paradigm for the young student, nor was it really relevant to their interests. Well, not quite. It's just that Falque knew what the name of the soup was. Probably didn't manage to vocalize it if Falque remembered, but one could imagine a French person would have an inkling of an idea of what French Onion soup was. “Thanks.” Falque muttered nonetheless. Their voice was rather masculine for a girl, but feminine for a boy. It certainly didn't lead to any good indicator of just who Elisha was dealing with. Naturally, of course, Elisha made up her mind as soon as she saw Falque. The albino looked back at Elisha, noticing her calm smile and relaxation. It made them self-conscious, and eventually Falque's shoulders eased somewhat and the kid took another breath to relax some more. Still, there was a twitch every second when their body was desperately wishing to sprint out of the café and wail. Falque managed to keep that to themselves, though. Leaning over towards the maps, Falque could see a bit of the red circles and lines indicating the roads. It seemed like Elisha was trying to play a little bit of Connect the Dots to figure out what routes to take and how far each thing was. Falque didn't know that much about the town either, though. “I'm new here too.” Falque slowly unzipped their coat, revealing the blouse underneath. “I'm Falque.” The waitress showed up to give Falque a glass of water. The kid took it promptly and took a gulp. They were a bit hot in that coat, in this relatively mild weather. |

Elisha took another sip of her drink. It was still too hot, so she set it aside and instead absently set about folding her map. She'd just have to unravel it again once she was done and ready to go, but for now it was just taking up space. "Oh? Are you a student?" she asked curiously. "I'm going to Gillespie Medical," she tacked on by way of explaining why the question would be of interest to her. |

Falque nodded slowly. As it turned out, so was she. The fact she was going to medical suggested she already had a degree too, much like themselves. Of course, Falque's had little to do with their old degree, “In music. Um...” Then they wondered if they should explain more. Falque sipped their glass of water for a moment, sitting uncomfortable in the silence, and blurted out, “I have a degree in Math too.” Falque looked towards the maps again, itching to try and 'solve' whatever they could solve from the bundle of paper and routes. “...” Falque opened their mouth, but little more than silence drew from it. Falque didn't close their mouth immediately either, rather they struggled to think up exactly what to say to Elisha. Finally, after some struggle in their brain, “Do you need help?" Falque pointed their eyes at the map, specifically. |

Elisha smiled when the kid spoke up, but she trailed off rather than elaborating on her schooling. After a moment of silence, she nodded thoughtfully, "An art student. I guess the only way we could be more on opposite ends of the spectrum is if I was an engineer." The silence may have been uncomfortable for Falque, but Elisha didn't let it get to her. She sat as relaxed as ever, cleaning out the remaining drops of soup from her bowl with a little bread from her sandwich, a small smile playing on her lips as her belly slowly filled. Good lord, she'd really needed food. And now she'd have to live the whole weekend without a fridge or freezer. The small outburst from Falque surprised her, but the distraction from her current dilemma was welcoming. "Math, huh? Guess I was wrong. I graduated with kinese and English, so it seems we're both pretty eclectic." She might have added more, but the kid looked like she so very much wanted to come up with something on her own. Elisha simply watched her with patient curiosity, blinking at the question that came out and following her eyes down to the map. "Oh, you know the area?" She tilted her head as she looked down at the labyrinth that was the city, thinking for a moment before she realized what she would need. "Actually, I do need some help. Do you know any takeout or pizza or burger joints that are around this area here?" She pointed to a circled location a few blocks over from them, a small notation added that read 'Fairview Apartments.' |

Falque was indeed eclectic. Perhaps out of the double-edged virtue of boredom and loss of social life that allowed them to seek solace in knowledge and skill. It helped that the kid was just plain smarter than the average Joe, or at least could soak up and utilize information faster and more accurately than their peers. Falque wondered if Elisha was not all that different. A lot of people said that medical school was one of the most challenging academic paths, at least in terms of stress and demand. That said, Falque didn't know the area as well as Elisha would probably have wished. The albino didn't make a distinct answer, just blinked at Elisha and waited for her to continue. It seemed like she figured out something to ask Falque, after all. Places where Elisha could grab food, presumably on the go. Falque looked at 'Fairview Apartments', and the area around it. It was a bit of a small location, but given its location, there had to be something in range. “Well...” Falque didn't have any encyclopedic knowledge of the place, but the kid did have a smart phone. Falque pulled out their phone and simply searched for the answer. After guessing the range of the circle, Falque started to point on the map. “There's a Domino's here. Umm...a burger chain here...” The albino pointed on the map for a few locations before stopping. “Did you want to sort by distance? Or price? Or quality? Or everything?” It certainly seemed more interesting than just sitting there and pointing out places. Falque could use some real brain power. “Do you prefer a certain type of food?” |

Elisha quickly retrieved a pencil from the bag that sat on the ground by her feet and scrawled 'Dominos' where Falque had indicated on the map. Looked like the kid was going the easy way and using the internet. Oh, how much easier things would be with a handheld internet and GPS. Too bad it cost so much. "Price is a factor, though for just a couple days, I could shell out more cash for something a little better in quality. See, I just moved into my apartment today, but the electric company won't turn on my power until Monday." Elisha wrinkled her nose in a grimace. "No fridge, no microwave. Not even a toaster. I'll be living off of take-out all weekend. Oh, is there some sort of world market nearby or something that would have a salad bar?" |

Falque tired to take note of Elisha's particulars. What they did was hardly anything concerned with sorcery, but Falque did do the job quickly and accurately. Falque assigned each restaurant nearby with a few different values, summing a weighted total between price, distance, and various other potential factors, even including a little bit on Falque's guess of what Elisha might like to eat. “Um...maybe there's something like that here?” Falque picked out one large market a little ways away from the apartment. They had only stepped into it a few times, but it had nice vegetables. On the other hand, it was a little pricey. “That must be expensive, though. Can't you live with someone else first? You'd save money.” Falque assumed cost was one of her larger factors for the time being. It was always cheaper to just make meals rather than eat out. |
