23-Sep-2011 - Runefest 2011 - Insider Sessions revealed!

With a main stage worthy of the West End, Insider Sessions are back, better, and with more content catering to what you have told us you want to know about. Whether you want to be first to check out next year’s content, say your piece on current issues or are looking to get your foot in the door of the gaming industry, the Insider Session at RuneFest 2011 will be the place to find all this and more.

Here’s just some of what’s on:

RuneScape 2012:

No crystal balls needed as RuneScape Lead Designer Mod Mark shares his vision for RuneScape’s future. With help from his fellow developers Mod Mark will share some thoughts, content, graphics and more than likely, some insights into the darkest recesses of his mind! Warning! This session will reveal future content!

Breaking Bots:

Bots are a much-discussed topic among many MMO players and, at RuneFest 2011, we’ll talk about the bots in RuneScape, our thoughts on them and our plans for combating them. The panel (including Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard) will then open the floor to your questions and comments. If you’ve an opinion on bots (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?) then this is a session that you really need to be a part of.

A Character Is Born:

Our forums are full of great suggestions and ideas for characters in RuneScape. So, for one weekend only, you’ll join forces with RuneScape’s designers to mix your creative juices and bring a brand new character into RuneScape. This will be no peripheral character, either! No, the character you create is already set for stardom in a major piece of future content.

You can see the full range of Insider Session over on RuneFest.com and, if you’re looking for the Main Stage’s full schedule, keep your eyes on the front page and follow us on Twitter (@runefest).

What is this nonsense? It caught my eye with this news post. Mostly the image that I could only imagine some girl being THAT into the game... Reminds me of Ability44 getting his RS name tattooed on himself. And some say I'm too into this game? Ha!

First thing that comes to mind with this photo... Mod Poppy.

Also with "Fighting the Bots" news posted last month. I've always been daily asking when will they follow up on this growing problem? It's not a one time issue. They must actively ban bots each and every day and review every report (some reports multiple times since many of us report the SAME bot). And to actually show they care about more than just cash funded by botters. They can still accept cash from bots, like they always have. But they can under their own Terms & Conditions ban anyone for any or no reason at all. THIS is as best a time as any to exercise that option to ban without refund.

My suggestion. And it may sound crazy. But infiltrate RSBot or PowerBot with a Jagex coder that makes the best bot on RS. While all the rest get "caught" this magical bot will be guaranteed untraceable by Jagex.

Charge for it and give the funds to Jagex for all I care. But give it a year and then issue a ban hammer on every single account to ever use that bot that will be infused with a particular coding that is easily traced by Jagex. End of story - no more bots and you've also took it down at the source! People will think twice before trusting PowerBot or RSBot ever again!

i agree with you, but i have a feeling that some of the mods on those forums go through the coding that "coders" want to post on their forums. if you think about it logically, powerbot and rsbot have been around for years now, they have survived somehow, letting codes into their worlds that would get their players banned faster probably wouldn't be allowed.

They need to combat the problem in a more direct fashion, with in game mods, and pmods actively pursuing the problem, somehow, they need to put a function for them to 'watch' the
player for suspicious activity, like camping at frost dragons for 13+ hours and not moving. or cutting the same yew tree for 36 hrs and gaining a huge amount of xp.

I believe that they just need to have mass server bans, go on each server, and goto big "botting areas" and wreck havoc among the **** head botters that are clogging up the rest of the system

The issue is banning bots does nothing, you need to hit the source, kill it at its roots not just cut down the branches.
Gold Famers don't care if an account gets banned, they just a make new on and farm some more, and the lazy guys who bot for levels don't care because they can get levels back by using the same bot on a new account. So banning does jack all. You can't IP ban because its too easier to alter your IP now, or mask it. So the only way to defeat bots is to somehow kill the sites/companies who make them.
Now Jagex is doing this by taking them to court (under what I'm not sure, probably copyright infringment of somekind - the coding or making money off their game). Of course, court takes a hell of a long time, years for cases like these sometimes. And with Jagex being 'we can't tell you due to the nature of the work we're doing to combat bots' we can't know for sure what the hell they are doing, so it becomes a 'trust us' game and hoping that their legal battle is resolved quickly. I'm sure details will slowly be revealed but till then we're in the dark.
I do like Erik's idea though. It's quite the perfect scheme, but relies on firstly building up that particular bots popularity, getting a Jagex coder into the bot companies in the first place and then somehow ensuring everyone buys that one. Even with that occuring, the companies can palm of the mass ban by saying 'looks like Jagex solved another one' and making more. Jagex could reply with 'we infiltrated them, how can you trust them' which might be a good reputation killer but, those companies can come back very easily under a new name.
Sadly, you can only do so much. In the end, bots will always be a part of this game. As gold farmers and bots plague WoW and Diablo 2, and most other MMOs (Including FPS games (though they are just hackers/glitch abusers) and other RPGs) so to will we always have to deal with them in RS. We can only hope we reduce their impact/prescence to a minimum.

Nova: Obviously not. Their website went down for about 7 days back on February 3rd 2011. I know because I wanted to post and see just how many would praise Jagex when they opened up unbans for cash through that dumb Banned Account Reinstatement policy Mod SteveW is leading.

Went to PowerBot and it said the website was down. Hopped on livechat and I overheard some discussing how the bot client was uploaded with a keylogger. So EVERYONE using the "updated" version of the client got 'hacked' as people love to call it. (It isn't hacking at all if you GIVE your password to a program that relays it to somebody else. Same goes for idiots that claim they got 'hacked' after sharing an account. There's other words for it - dumb, idiot, scammed.)
