Hello everyone, as you may already know I haven't been around a lot lately this is due to the fact that I have been training for SAS selection. Which has been quite literally the hardest few months of my life! I am due to be finishing the last stage of selection over the next few weeks. I am going away on 2nd July for a week which will intel a weeks worth of endurance running and scenario based activities all of which are to be carried out with very little sleep, at most 2 hours a night which sucks! So that's why i'm going to be away, I know i've posted early but I had some spare time so decided to post now ![]() Wish me luck and see you when I get back (hopefully an SAS trooper) |

Where do I start? Well I arrived at my hotel Saturday night where I slept for about an hour due to feeling so sick with nerves. I then got ready to meet the DS at the barrack for 5am Sunday morning. The day started with the usual PT (Physical Training) then we headed out to the Brecon Beacons for the first part of the Hill stage. After 20 miles of walking through thick grass and wading through waste deep rivers we rested for a whole hour all still sick with nerves and fear that if we did not complete the hikes with in the alloted times, all that we had trained for would be for nothing. No one spoke. After our hours rest we set out for our night time hike. This was a lot more challenginging, sleep deprived, starving and sick with nerves didn't make for an easy 20 mile hike. Day 2: We finished our night hike at 12am midnight, after our debreif and cleanedour equipment ready for the next hill challenge it was 1.30am by the time we finally got to lye down. 4am, we were told to be ready and lined up in uniform for 5am sharp, that included breakfast, wash and full uniform all in an hour. Today we were going on another 20 mile hike through the hills but this time had to add a further 10kg to our sacks. Still aching from yesterdays 40mile round trip, we set off this time in pairs the hike was just as bad as yesterdays but worse, the guy i had been partnered was an 10 years older than me and had tried and failed 3 times before, he was enthusiastic and knew the system which may seem like a good thing but he was far to relaxed and comfortable in his surroundings for me so we argued a lot about different routes and the fastest way around. Soon enough we went our seperate ways and sure enough he beat me back but either way we still made it back within the permitted time. We waited and watched as many others returned tired and exhausted who were sent back home as they had failed the selection, by now there was only 20 of us from the original 38. After our hour's rest we then started night hike but beforehand we were lined up *this hadn't happend before. The second name of my partner was called out it had turned out he had crossed a river using a bridge opposed to crossing through the lake. He was chucked out, I felt so smug :p This was just what I needed as a little pick me up before we set out. The night walk this time rather than going back the way we had came we continued in the direction we had been going in all day. This meant a longer, harder walk on unknown terrain and didn't know what to expect quite as much as we would have had we gone the way we came. Day 3: We finished that nights walk at 2 am, once again we had to clean our equipment and be debriefed by the time that was done it was 3am, one hours sleep later we were up and getting ready to be lined up and briefed about the days hike. The time between cleaning our equipment and waking up was so short my boots sole were still wet from the water i had used to clean what really was just minutes earlier. Today was longest hike we had done yet, but were given a lot longer to complete. We were told to hike back to our base almost 40 miles away. This really wasnt something i was looking forward to after only 5-6 hours sleep in the previous 3 days. We set off on our own today armed with our maps and compass' a few hours in I was walking through boggy mud but every now and then hard clumps of dirt which twisted your ankle, everytime you stood on them. The first few times it hurt after about 10 times your ankle becomes very numb and hardly feel it anymore. However when i was almost out of this unforgiving muck! I twisted my ankle and SNAP! I broke it. I have spent the rest of the day in hospital now all plastered up. I am awaiting to hear what I can do now.. But that's the story. |

Received a letter today telling me I have failed the selection due to injury. However written in pen at the bottom of the letter was a personal note from the DS. It said "you have shown real strength and stamina to get this far in selection for someone of your age (18, five years younger than the next youngest) You would be a credit to the regiment and all of us here wish you luck for future applications" So all of that training since Christmas for nothing, but the small paragraph wrote in pen from the DS was a nice touch. Now i have 6 weeks of recovery while i wait for my ankle to heal. Hopefully i will not need an operation. |
