Car Repairs Scam Another One

Ever wonder why people dread leaving their automobile at a repair garage? It isn't because the part itself costs too much to afford. But not even by the time you arrive at home they are ALREADY trying to jack up the price through labor and time.

So after I had my friend put a patched up tire back on my car I noticed it wasn't balanced. I didn't take it in straight away but rather waited for the A/C to stop working before I decided it was time to take it in for repairs.

All I said was to balance the tires, change the oil, check the fluids, and maybe put to refill the A/C because it's just blowing hot air (all it needs is a little Freeon).

I get home and straight away I get a call. He asks if I noticed the car shaking when I drove. Then he told me it needs a new drive shaft. (He still hasn't named a price for that getting fixed.) He told me to dye and repair the A/C would be around $190, and another $200 to wield the Y-joint in the exhaust because it has a leak on the passenger side which if left unattended could lead to further problems. The oil change is a simple $15 deal. But he also tried naming something wrong with the barrings in the tires (he can kiss my ass if he thinks I'm laying out anymore than $500 -- enough of a scam at that).

So yeah just figured I'd vent a little of today's frustrations and see if anyone here knows the REAL pricing on those issues being resolved. Because quite honestly I think it's just a scam like most automotive repair joints are.

Seems like this car is worth more in repairs than the actual purchase value. Paid $7000 for this '98 Ford Mustang SRS v6 only about 4 years ago. Spent $200 to repair both headlights because during an accident they got cracked and water got inside. Then I had my driver side window fell off the track and inside the door itself. Another $120 for them to replace that and install a new power-window kit. And I won't even get started about the $350 paint job after rear-ending someone whom stopped too short.

All in all I don't trust repair shops. If it was something I could handle myself I would do that or take it to a friend to do and just pay them on the side.
