Can Things Ever Be Normal?; Open

What was normal, depending on who you asked, you’d likely always get a different answer. One person’s normal could be another’s strange or odd, or perhaps they had matching views on what normal was, but what happened if you didn’t know what your normal was? For two years, Thomas had abandoned everything he believed to be normal due to guilt and fear, and had run away to create a new normal for himself. Where he use to feel like transforming into a dragon and flying around or fighting alongside the X-Men was normal, his new normal had shifted to creating an emotional walk around himself and shutting others out and being a galactic protector. He had found himself going from planet to planet helping prevent or end conflicts, and if he ever found anything dangerous, bringing it back to S.H.I.E.L.D. for safe keeping. Though he knew that wasn’t normal, or at least not the normal he wanted, then again he still didn’t know what he wanted aside from the guilt to end.

He knew blood was on his hands, the blood of those he couldn’t save back during the incident, and all those he couldn’t protect while being the so-called Protector of the Universe. He thought distance would help, but all that did was intensify the issue due to his ability to dwell on it alone, and he had found himself unable to really confront those he felt he needed to apologize to. He had a team then, and he knew he let them down and abandoned them, but he also knew it wasn’t easy to face them. Though he had decided to stay at Graymalkin, he didn’t feel he could really let anyone in, after all he had failed them and he wasn’t sure he could own up to that yet. Despite all that though, he still had a connection to Manhattan, and had found himself in a usual haunt back when he resided at Xavier’s Institute.

Starbucks, he had found himself here a lot in the past, usually drinking a espresso or tea and reading a book. Today, he found himself in a corner alone, sipping on a Piña Colada Tea Infusion while trying to catch up on the past two years worth of events. He sat there in a white t-shirt with a fully unbuttoned black shirt over it, his broken necklace resting on his chest. Instead of jeans he favored a nice pair of black slacks, a pair of black and white sneakers adorning his feet, his Quantum Bands ‘invisible’ to everyone around. Though he did truly like the design they had taken, he knew the power they held, and didn’t want them finding the wrong attention. So as he sat there drinking his tea, he scanned the room quickly, though doubted he’d recognize anyone there or that anyone would recognize him.

He sat his phone down, having given up trying to find out what had happened, finding it a bit tedious and frustrating to be honest. It doesn’t seem like the world has really changed in two years, then again I’ve only been back a few days now, and I’ve mostly kept myself busy trying to settle in.

Excuses, that’s all it really was, but the truth was he was afraid of what he’d find out. He was worried he’d find out people he had been close to had died, he also feared that he had come back to find some allies had become enemies, though he knew things had changed with the X-Men since his return. For started they were now at Graymalkin, and though their encounter was brief in the past, he did recognize a change in Mika. To be honest, all he saw in the few familiar faces he’s seen since his return was change, though if it was change for the better was still unclear. He knew he had changed, and though he felt it was for the best, deep down he knew shutting people out or putting a mask on around then wasn’t helping him any.

Nathaniel Janith was a young man who had been in what some called the civilized world for a couple of years now but even then he still wore his usual attire, though he'd been toning it down just a little though not completely. He came into the coffee shop with long black pants and a short sleeve white button up shirt, upon his head sat his Amish hat which covered most of his head but his medium length hair still poked out below in it. The young Amish man had gotten used to things within this world, he'd even started drinking the stuff known as coffee sometimes though his wasn't as regularly as some did there days.

He'd come in and ordered his drink and looked around for a seat, spotting the man in the back who was scanning the crowd. But that wasn't the only thing that caught Nathaniel's eye, as the bands on his wrist seemed to be quite extravagant. And given that no one else was looking at them in any fashion, he figured they weren't noticeable by others. He found a table near the man and put his coffee down on the table and leaned over a little with his hat down, knowing he might have to throw down as some call it if this man was a bad guy.

"Please tell me, that you mean no harm to these people. With those rather interesting bands of yours, I gather no one else can see them. But things can't be hidden from me, and I'd rather not find another coffee shop by revealing my other self here" informed Nathaniel with a simple tone that wasn't harsh or some kind of authoritative wording but a simply question and hope that he wasn't there to cause trouble.

Since joining the Avengers, Kate had surprised the others at the way she had been able to continue maintaining her low profile, even though she didn't wear a mask or disguise beside her shades. But she had long ago asked the Scarlet Witch to help her out, back when she was still part of the YA. She had put an enchantment on her shades, that made her face unrecognizable when she wore them. If anything, it was probably better than a disguise, because MAGIC trumped everything, according to Billy. She felt a little wistful, thinking about her old teammates, but when the Young Avengers had fallen apart yet AGAIN and Carol had asked her to step up, it had been the right choice, if not the best choice.

Today, she was just walking around Manhattan, taking the afternoon off. Fresh out of the gym and shower at the Mansion, she was looking good, and feeling good too. Skinny jeans, a purple blouse, and a leather jacket gave her the right air of sophistication, especially with her hair back. She wouldn't have looked too out of place at a Parisian cafe or walking around in Rome. But the day was cool, if not exactly cold, and the archer ducked into a Starbucks, to get a coffee to warm up.

While she was waiting, she caught an odd sight. A guy wearing an old-fashioned hat, like something she would see in Lancaster County. But then again, Breaking Amish was a thing, and maybe he was getting his chance to experience the outside world? And the guy he was talking to, he looked kinda cute, if maybe a bit old for her. She put the pair out of her mind, as she came to the counter and ordered her venti white mocha, and looked at them again while she was waiting on it to be made, smiling when she caught their eye.

Tom knew in the back of his head that scanning a room could come across as odd, but it never actually occurred to him that someone would confront him about it. Insert Kid Amish taking a seat beside him, causing him to freeze a little as he leaned in, calmly and quietly speaking about the Bands and hoping he meant no ill will with them. Before he could respond however, he took notice of the young woman walking in and catching their attention, their gaze briefly connecting as he couldn’t help but notice how attractive she was. Though unable to shaking the odd feeling he was getting from the man beside him, he returned his full attention to him, taking another drink from his tea before leaning back in his chair calmly.

”How you can see these Bands baffles me, but if I meant any harm, I would’ve done so already. I can assure you, these Bands are only used to protect people, though for obvious reasons I’d rather that not get out. The fact that you can see them surprises me, but due to that I can safely assume you’re a powered person, and I bet you’re a young hero based off your interest in stopping me if I meant any ill will.” He made sure to keep his voice down, not wanting word of the Bands getting out, setting his cup down as he sighed a little.

Though his intrusion did annoy Thomas, he couldn’t help but admire the fact that he first thought of protecting the people here, however foolish the method of going about it was. The kid had no knowledge of just what the Bands could do, which put him at risk had Thomas turned out to be a villain, but that was a trait several heroes seemed to have. Hell, back when he had powers without the Bands, he had done some rather foolish things like that. Perhaps it had more to do with youth and lack of experience, or perhaps it was that desire to carve a name for oneself in a world full of heroes and villains, but either way it was foolish to act without intel; a lesson he wished he had taken to heart long ago.

Taking a moment to divert his attention, he found the young woman and quickly excused himself from the table, getting up and heading to the counter while she ordered. Pulling out his wallet, he smiled at her and pulled out his card, handing it to the cashier. ”Hope you don’t mind, couldn’t help but notice you looking at us, so I at least wanted to introduce myself and couldn’t think of a better way. The name is Thomas, but please, call me Tom.” He smiled politely, putting his wallet away and looking back at the table briefly, returning his attention to her briefly with an apologetic look.

”Feel free to join us, this place is pretty crowded today, and I know it’s a bit cold outside.” He sheepishly smiled, knowing how cheesy he sounded or at least felt with that, and turned to head back to his table. He needed to know how the Amish guy knew about the Bands, it wasn’t so much that the fact that he saw them bothered him, but it was more how he did that intrigued him. He had said things couldn’t be hidden from him, but just what that meant was cryptic, though he assumed it had something to do hiding things or he had a method of seeing cloaked objects. Perhaps there was more to it, but Thomas had learned a long time ago to never assume anything about another person’s power, because acting upon a false assumption could always lead to disaster.

Looking at the kid again, Thomas had a serious nature about him, his gaze focused on him as if he were trying to read him. Keeping his voice low so as to keep talk of powers between them, he knew he had to make it quick, as he had just invited the young woman to his table. ”So, how can you see the Bands, how does that work? They’re programmed to bend the light around them so others can’t see them, but you can see through that, and you’re the first person I know of aside from past wielders that can do that.”

The man responded, surprised that he could see his bands which was something Nathaniel was used to by now. People being shocked by what his powers can do, had the main truly meant ill will then all Nathaniel had to do was touch him. And that would take mere seconds, but thankfully the man had specified that he meant no ill will though his adding of having already done it if he had was a little much. "It's a part of my powers, I see the truth in everything" replied Nathaniel, leaving the rest of his words in the air for the moment just so as not to reveal his own self to the man.

Then the man excused himself and went and helped out a young lady at the counter, he didn't get a good look so he couldn't comment on her appearance all that much. But he guessed she was good looking and the man was feeling like he wanted out of the conversation or something like that. Maybe he wanted to flirt with the girl, either way the man returned and spoke once again this time he seemed much more serious in his tone.

"It's just like I said before, I see the truth in everything and because your bands are essentially lying. Not just in a general sense but those around you, that then makes it so I can see them. It's that simple, nothing more nothing less" added Nathaniel to the man hoping this wouldn't turn into one of those misunderstanding things he'd heard other heroes speak of.

Kate had gone back to minding her own business when the guy had walked up, paid for her coffee, introduced himself, and then invited her to sit with him and his friend. She felt her face go warm, because he had outright said he had seen her looking, and while she was confident, she still had a certain shyness about guys. She had been hit on before, but her lack of interest in anyone at all the past few years had meant a blank stare and her obvious closed body language had usually gotten the idea through without her saying anything. MVP had gotten her to pay attention, but that hadn't gone anywhere, and he had seemed not to realize she was maybe interested.

But the cute guy, no, Tom, he had her a little bit intrigued. She watched him walk back to his seat, looking away before he saw her looking. Only for the cashier to smile at her. "Go for it, girl. That man is fine." She didn't say it loudly, but she made a show of checking Tom out and got Kate to laugh along with her. She took her coffee, holding it in both hands, letting it warm them, as she decided. I was looking at him. And he seems nice, and he's cute...and how bad a judge of character could an Amish be? The presence of his Amish companion settled it for her. Kate walked over, a shy half-smile on her lips.

Setting down her coffee, she pulled a chair out and sat down, so that the two males were on her right and left, respectively. "Hi. I'm Kate. Thanks for the coffee, Tom." She wasn't good at flirting. It had been years since she had done it. She looked at the Amish guy and the blurted out, "Nathaniel?! What are you doing here?" They were teammates, but Kate was very new and hadn't really had a chance to get to know him. Or even process that he was Amish. In hindsight, she could've guessed, but it wasn't as though they were besties already or anything. Looking back at Tom, to let him know how she knew Nathaniel, "We just started working in the same department."

”Fair enough, so in a sense, you’re a living lie detector. That’d be really useful in numerous situations, and I’m sure thanks to that power, you’ve prevented many a....” Tom truly found the power fascinating, though he had a feeling there was more to him than he expected, he cut himself off at the young woman approached.

Before he could get a chair for her, she had pulled her own up and taken a seat between them, smiling over at her as she introduced herself. Before he could reply, she reacted to his Amish ‘friend’, and he tilted his head as he realized she might’ve been looking at him. They apparently knew each other, or at least she knew him, and perhaps the look was the brief glimpse of familiarity. It didn’t matter in the long term, after all her gaze did connect with his, so it couldn’t have been a simple familiarity with his ‘friend.’ Turning to Nathaniel, Tom extended his hand and smiled, fully intending to introduce himself now. ”So that’s your name, it’s a pleasure to meet you Nathaniel, my name is Tom.”

After his overdue introduction, he turned back to face Kate, listening to her explanation of their knowing each other. So, they started working in the same department, or perhaps she meant team. He knew Nathaniel was powered, but he also knew that didn’t automatically mean Kate was, after all a powered person could have non-powered friends. Mulling it in his mind for a bit, he couldn’t help but picturing Kate as the heroic type, but then again it could be because she did look athletic. Perhaps that was all it was, they were co-workers, and she didn’t know about his powers. Though he had a feeling their department was really a team, he didn’t want to take a shot in the dark and freak Kate out. After all, if she didn’t know Nathaniel was a hero and he ousted the both of them, there was no telling how she’d react. Besides, he wasn’t too sure if she had arrived in time to hear them discussing Nathaniel’s powers or not, and he’d rather not out a powered person if he didn’t have to. It had happened to him once before, and due to it, he had made the hugest mistake of his life.

”Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you Kate, and don’t mention it, I’m just glad you decided to join us.” His lips formed a soft smile, sitting up in his chair a little more, briefly looking between the two of them before settling his gaze on Kate. ”So, where do y’all work? I’ve just recently gotten back in town after a two year work trip, so I’m just trying to readjust, and I’ve noticed a lot of smaller shops have come and gone.”

Of course, by work trip, he meant he had be out in the Universe stopping all kinds of conflicts; both big and small. However, should questions get raised, he had a cover should he remain unsure if she knew about Nathaniel. If she knew Nathaniel was a hero, or if she turned out to be one too like he somewhat suspected, he’d be honest about the past two years. Either way, he wouldn’t be lying, he just either be telling the real truth, or a portion of the truth. For now though, he just sat there, listening to them speak about how they worked together.

"Yes it comes in handy" replied Nathaniel just as Kate came to sit with them and Tom stopped mid sentence, because he didn't know her and secret identities were something most people liked to keep secret. The girl spoke to Tom first and then turned to him and he recognised her as his team mate but they hadn't done a lot of talking or getting to know one another "Good to see you as well Kate" added Nathaniel with a nod and a smile. With his name out and in the open Tom also made an introduction and offered his hand, Nathaniel shook it and replied to his introduction also. "Yes, sorry for not introducing myself earlier" he said in a friendly manner.

Kate had covered her blurt out with saying they worked in the same department, outside of the hero teams Nathaniel's only work was with the church and it's charities. So that would be the way he was going to respond "Well it's more a charity then work, though they too need people behind the scenes" expressed Nathaniel having little knowledge of what shops were here before his arrival in town. Being that he was from Amish country he knew only so much about the town with which he was mostly found, sure he'd learned an awful lot since coming here some of which he didn't like to learn such as all the evils here not all of it revolved around the supernatural.

"Did you go travelling, I've only gone so far and most of it was in the United States" commented Nathaniel who wasn't a fan of lying for many reasons but it was true to a certain degree, he hadn't done a lot of travelling outside of the country that was the United States. But he had been to the end of the universe and other space bound places, however he couldn't speak openly about that since Kate's secret was her own to tell not his.

Charity? Kate glanced at Nathaniel, wondering how much he knew about her past, to have given that answer. On the plus side, she did have years of experience helping her late mother with her foundation, and the Avengers did work for free(the stipend they got was because NYC was expensive, not payment), so it was true enough. She wondered what Nate had said before she had gotten here; he was polite but that also made him oddly direct, too. She decided to go with someone close to the truth. "We work for the Maria Stark Foundation." That could explain away Nathaniel's powers, if he had revealed them. Who better to evaluate other people for a charity?

She kinda looked down at her coffee, shyly as Tom looked at her directly, feeling entirely off her game. The sad thing was, she was maybe the worst person to talk to about shopping and stores, even though she enjoyed it. For her it was just awkward small talk, of places she half-remembered and others she didn't know at all. The travel talk sparked her interest though. As a rich girl, she had done a lot of traveling when she was younger, and sometimes still did, with her father. "Oh, you get to travel for work? Sounds wonderful. So, what do you do, and did you go anywhere exciting?"

Though it was brief, Tom couldn’t help but notice the shift from department to charity, though he had to admit Kate did make a very good recovery by naming the Maria Stark Foundation. He knew the Foundation well enough, they funded the Avengers as well as various charities and renovation projects, but why would Kate mention that Foundation specifically. She had to know he had powers, after all that would be quite the coincidence using the Foundation that funded the Avengers, and Kate didn’t strike him as the type to lie. So, best he could come up with was either Nathaniel being an Avenger and Kate meeting him while doing work for the Foundation, or they were both Avengers; but that gave him even more questions than answers.

He’d have to navigate this conversation a little more carefully, for though he felt it save to assume Kate knew about Nathaniel’s powers, he didn’t want to overstep any boundaries by bluntly speaking about them or making assumptions. So turning to Nathaniel, he cocked his eyebrow, wondering if he’d he blunt with his answers, or if he’d be honest but vague. ”So, what exactly is it that y’all do for the Foundation, y’all aren’t Avengers, are y’all?” He knew asking directly might raise suspicion, but it might also tip Kate off that he knew about Nathaniel’s powers if she did, though it might also make her suspect he had them if she knew about Nathaniel’s.

When he was asked about his travels, he sat back and smiled a little, having not exactly expecting to be asked about it this quickly. He knew he couldn’t deceive Nathaniel, and luckily even though he didn’t plan on being entirely truthful about his travels, not a single shred would be a lie or deceitful. Sure, he’d leave out details like the entire Universe being what he traveled, and he’d especially leave out the parts about how he used the Quantum Bands to save planets and help prevent threats from reaching Earth. That’d also meant he couldn’t exactly tell them about recovering alien artifacts for S.H.I.E.L.D., but that was a little less about keeping his identity a secret, and a little more about being sworn to secrecy; and S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn’t an organization he wanted to cross.

”Well, I travel around the world helping out where I can, but I have also taken artifacts to places to be preserved and protected when I come across them. I once found a beautiful circlet this tribe believed gave the wearer powers, if I remember they said it could be used to control emotions, but I honestly believe it was just superstition.” He spoke as if he didn’t believe the tribe’s claim, but had witnessed firsthand what it could do, and was glad to see it stored away in a vault out of the wrong hands.

He glanced at Nathaniel, wondering if he’d pick up on and call him out on his deceit, though he did truthfully disbelieve the tribe at first. He had encountered several dud artifacts, but he did occasionally find the real deal that had some sort of gift, though he was starting to wonder if the Vaults of Asgard might have been a better choice than S.H.I.E.L.D., though it was too late now to change what had happened. Part of him did want to tell them about the Universe and all the fascinating planets he had encountered, but he didn’t want to expose himself or tell a potential civilian about the Universe. Best case scenario they’d believe him and he could be a little more truthful, though worse case scenario, that likely got him checked into the mental institute or something. I mean, it wasn’t everyday that someone claimed to travel the Universe, so of course crazy would likely be the first logical response.

Nathaniel mostly worked for his church but he also worked for other places too, including the Maria Stark Foundation but not even just as an Avenger. In his civilian life and work as a priest also come into play, he'd offer his time as a celebrant to those that couldn't afford it or were afraid how their families would react to their union. So what Kate was saying wasn't lying either, though he was only on the books with the Maria Stark Foundation as a come and go volunteer. But he was also an Avenger though that was something else entirely though the man decided to cut to that chase, and Nathaniel didn't really react surprised at the question responding quickly and succinctly.

"I'm simply a volunteer who works in the more religious and counseling side of things, occasionally I meet with those behind the scenes in order for them to feel less stressed if they need someone to talk too" informed Nathaniel who does a lot of talking with people who have problems as a priest, even though he's young many feel he's a good person to talk too. He's even had rather interesting chats with his friends on the Midnight Sons and Guardians from time to time not that any of those tough people would admit such things but that was part of his job to lend an ear where the words go no further.

The man answered Kate's question about traveling and much of what he said seemed to have grains of truth too it but he felt no need to hold him up on what he was saying. He understood the need for secrecy being a hero himself, though the part about the crown did tip some red flags from something he'd read about in the Avengers files. But he felt that it might not be the Serpent Crown and probably some other strange artifact, there were countless in the world that held strange and unique powers.

Kate burst into laughter at Tom's immediate and correct deduction. But even if she liked him, and he seemed to be OK, she wasn't willing to give up their secret quite that
quickly. "Avengers? I wish! No, I'm what you would call a socialite. Derek Bishop is my father." The way she said it made it clear that she expected Tom to have heard of her father, the publisher. "I work for the Maria Stark Foundation because I used to help my mother with her charitable endeavors. I needed a job, while I wait for my trust fund," she joked lightly, "and the Foundation was perfect! Getting a chance to maybe meet Tony Stark..." She didn't quite swoon, but she felt she made a passable imitation.

She gestured at her teammate. "And Nathaniel here, comes in very handy. For what he mentioned, and something else. A lot easier to see if people really need our help, or determine if they're scamming us when he can kinda see the truth of the matter." His powers sounded innocuous enough, being a living, breathing lie detector. "Oh, so kinda like Indiana Jones? But without the sorta sketchiness? Sounds exciting." Her tone was playful, making it difficult to tell if she approved of that sketchiness or not. She held up her hand. "No! No, don't tell me that isn't at all like what you do. Don't ruin the fantasy."

She took a sip of her coffee, then asked, "So are you gonna be in town a while, or just kinda passing through...?" Her interest could have sounded personal, or polite. She had accepted a strange man's invitation to have coffee with him, but that could be all it was.

Having deciding he’d hear them both out before commenting, he listened to them describe what they did for the Foundation, raising an eyebrow when he heard Kate’s father’s name. ”Hold on, you mean Derek Bishop, the man behind Bishop Publishing?” Though he had only heard of the Bishop family due to their status in Manhattan, he still knew the name, though that wouldn’t make him look at Kate any differently.

”So, Nathaniel here offers people his ear if they need it, and also helps prevent the Foundation from being scammed. I must say Nathaniel, that’s a very handy gift you have there, especially when it helps prevent people from being taken advantage of.” His compliment was sincere, after all, heroes came in all forms; and Nathaniel’s gifts made sure the Foundation’s resources were used for the right cause. ”So, what is it you do for the Foundation Kate, I assume you help them on the charitable side of it?”

He hadn’t forgotten the part about Tony Stark, for despite it being a good effort, he didn’t need Nathaniel’s gift to see that was an act. He didn’t know if she put that act on to hide anything, as he was still partially convinced she was and Avenger or at least worked alongside them, or perhaps she was Stark’s assistant or something. He knew Tony had a reputation when it came to woman, but Kate definitely didn’t strike him as the type to be easily swayed, so he immediately struck that connection off the list of possibilities. Though when she mentioned he was like Indiana Jones, he couldn’t help but to laugh, especially when she said not to ruin the fantasy. Oh, he was most definitely like Indiana Jones, except the entire Universe was his hunting grounds; not just Earth.

”Well, that’s kinda exactly like what I do, but Indy has nothing on me.” He wasn’t exactly trying to sound like a braggart, but he did find artifacts on a quite larger scale than Indy did in the movies, and his dangers sometimes had advanced alien technology behind it.

He laughed a bit on the inside at his own comment, realizing it sounded a lot more boastful than he was intending, though he couldn’t take it back now. He did pause though when Kate asked if he was going to be staying a while, and being unable to tell her reasoning behind the question, he gave it a little thought. He was admittedly attracted to her, and the fact that she was working for the Maria Stark Foundation for charitable reasons made it clear she was a great person, so he felt she deserved a little more truth than what he had been giving. ”I’ll be traveling between here and San Francisco quite frequently for the time being, I currently live at Graymalkin, but I still have ties here so I visit quite often. Though there’s something you should know first, I use to be a mutant and a member of the X-Men, but was depowered during a conflict with the Purifiers. I mean, I know mutants still aren’t exactly welcomed for the most part, so I'll understand if you aren’t interested in hanging out again sometime.”

With a simple statement, he accomplished two things, both expressing his interest in Kate and giving himself an excuse if she rejected the thought. To the average person that hated mutants, once a mutant, always a mutant, so being depowered wouldn’t change that for most. If Nathaniel listened for any sort of deception or lie, he’d find no such thing in this statement, as even the thought of it still caused him pain to this day; noticeable by the subtle twinge and hand crossing his chest to rest on his shoulder. He still hasn’t forgiven himself for fleeing after that the Purifiers did, nor could he really understand why the X-Men welcomed him back after abandoning them, so he threw up this wall in case Kate had no interest in at least pursuing a friendship. He looked at Nathaniel, unsure exactly how he got his gifts, but he didn’t believe the man to be a mutant; so him having powers didn’t exactly cast a negative gaze upon him even by the mutant-hating kind.

Kate had followed his words about the job at the Maria Stark Foundation and the work he does there, she even added the part about using his powers without any prompts which was good for his story. He nodded to the man when he spoke about his job at the Foundation, though not entirely true it wasn't false either. Then it seemed that Kate was getting a little interested in the man, he had noticed in what little time he'd known her that she held interest in someone else but maybe it was unrequited. Either way he let them have their little flirting, he wasn't exactly naive about that kind of thing as people might think.

Plenty of girls liked him back home and he had dated here and there while in this civilized world, they liked his honest nature and different heritage. Then he spoke of his being a depowered mutant, which didn't ring any lying bells to him and he'd talked to several mutants with that issue before. It's very sad especially those who liked having their power, even though they weren't X-men some wanted to be and others just liked being different to their older selves.

"If you need any support for you depowerment, I've worked with several others in your situation back at my church. If you ever want to talk about it, though I'm not one myself I do understand it can be frustrating" added Nathaniel hoping to reinforce his councilor like nature though he hadn't admitted he was a priest as well but that didn't really matter at this point.

You're not the hero of this story. I am.
Avengers
"That's the one," she said as confirmation. "And that left me kinda poorly prepared for a real life, so like I said...socialite." Even if she wasn't, it was an OK cover and she did technically qualify since she didn't have a real job. "Me? I'm there to shakedown other rich folks, pardon me, solicit donations to the Foundation from polite society. I've been involved with my mother's charity work since I was twelve or so. I'm there because I know these people, know how to move among them, and know how to get them to sign checks. Parting the wealthy from their money, so we can put it to use for worthy causes, that's my superpower." She gave a winning smile.

Nathaniel was surprisingly quiet, letting her carry their end of the conversation, although she left a few spots where he could jump in as she and Tom spoke. She had a feeling that her teammate didn't want to intrude on their mild flirting, for whatever reason. "Oh, is that a fact?" Kate asked in mock outrage, although her eyes told him what was going on. She liked Tom so far, but couldn't let his 'Indy has nothing on me' comment go unchallenged. "I dunno...he's got that whole professor but ruggedly handsome thing down pretty well. And his reputation is at least a little bit shady. Do you have a shady reputation, Tom?" She arched an eyebrow, eagerly awaiting a response.

She was a little bit surprised when he gave his reveal about Graymalkin, being an X-man(ex-X-man? double X-man?) and being a depowered mutant. Her look over to Nate to see his reaction to Tom's story wasn't hidden in the slightest. She clearly wanted to see if he was telling the truth. It would possibly make things simpler. Kate laughed mentally, at the idea that him being an ex-X-man would actually be easier than if he was a normie. It would make the whole Avengers thing not a big deal. When Nate offered his counseling, she relaxed a little, satisfied that he would have detected a falsehood. While she processed that, it hit her, what he had said. He wanted to hang out again. "I'm OK with that. I actually was going to heading out West for a while myself soon..." She wasn't ready yet to admit to being an Avenger, ex-X-man or not, but at least it wasn't out of the realm of possibility now, either.
