The major television networks were suddenly interrupted by a pirate feed. A yellow circled X took over millions of tv screens for the first seven or eight seconds; just long enough to get everyone's attention. And then finally, a video feed was patched through. The X-Comm on Cym's chest doubled as a body camera. It was high enough to catch the faces of the X-Men as they sat strapped into their chairs aboard the Blackbird. Slowly walking down the center isle of seats, Cym's voice could be heard. "We interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring you the truth," he said. "There is a wolf in our midst, and it bears the Lamb's clothing. We, the X-Men, are going to root it out and expose it for what it is. You may know this wolf as the Purifier Church, but we know it as the Church of Fanatical Murderers." He stopped next to Jubilee, placing a hand on the young woman's shoulder before turning around to face the front of the jet. His body cam gave a view from behind the seated X-Men, capped off with a cloudy look through the cockpit windshield. Right then, he removed the X-Comm from his chest and held it out in front of him. The shot would catch his face; stern and angry, likened to a brew of storm clouds preparing to unleash an unforgiving torrent of rain and quaking thunder. "You want proof? Get the kids outta the room, because in ten seconds you'll see something beyond disturbing." That was the signal for Madison to enact the second phase of the broadcast hijacking. There was ten long seconds of static. And then, security footage of the meeting with Mother Contessa at Graymalkin was shown. Nearly ten minutes of insanity, as far as Cym was concerned. It went through how she showed the pictures of the alleged attackers who had destroyed one of their research hospitals, their faces unclear, and it also included the photo of six children who stared with fear directly into the camera, their faces not-so-unclear. Cym asked who they were and if they were leverage. She inferred that the children, who were clearly mutant, were born without souls, cleverly dodging a response to the question. That alone could be interpreted as guilt by many. Eventually, she went on to speak of a "mass exorcism", which could be loosely interpreted as "execution", given that the mutant children were supposedly demonic in nature, as the woman had inferred. And then, the next few moments were hell to watch. The children were devoured by the beast. The tail end of the video was corrupted, so the worst of it wasn't shown... but there was enough shown to turn the stomachs of even the most steeled individuals. When the static cleared, Cym stood at the front of the isle between the seated X-Men, holding the X-Comm camera at such an angle that it caught himself and all of the other X-Men. "There you have it," he said, his voice nearly a whisper forced from his dry, achy throat. Tears welled up in his eyes and he was not ashamed of it. "Tonight, there will be six empty beds with no one there to be tucked in... Six plates at the table that will go uneaten... Six empty desks in the classrooms, and a river of tears and pain. We are angry. So angry that it hurts. To the families of these six children... I say to you that I am sorry. We are sorry. We cannot bring your children back, but we can make those responsible for their deaths pay. And to anyone associated with the Purifier Church, know this: We don't believe that you are all bad people. We know that some of you are simply following what you believe, regardless of who it offends or who agrees with it. We have no qualms with you. But if you have ever taken part of anything violent, hurtful, or demeaning toward anyone who is not genetically like you, or even if you have witnessed it and stayed silent, well then you are the problem. YOU are the problem! We're coming for your leader, and we will crush him and everything he stands for. We will expose his true nature to the world and will let the world be his judge. So Mr. Leader, whoever you are, prepare to feel the wrath of justice. Prepare to live out the rest of your days behind four concrete walls. We are the X-Men, and we stand for justice, peace, and equality. We'll stop at nothing to take you down." Just before the transmission cut out and returned the stations back to their regularly scheduled programs, Cym looked over his shoulder at his team and yelled, "X-Men... AX UP!" And then, the transmission ended. |
