Canon/Original: Pre-made by Comb
Codename: Jack O’ Lantern
Real Name: Steven Mark Levins
Nickname: Mad Jack, Jack
Age: Mid to Late Thirties
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance: The stereotype for most psychotics is that “they look just like everyone else,” and that is indeed the case with Steven Levins. Standing at least 6’2 with a thin, strong physique, he makes quite the handsome figure with his mass of dark brown hair (always combed back), the persistent five o’clock shadow, and his deep set, dark eyes. Always there seems to be a slightly wicked smile on his face that implies that there is more going on than he will admit. He is disarming, charismatic, and an ideal person to run into in the dark of night. But that is only one side of the coin.
When doing something he truly enjoys, Steven’s face will alight with devilishness, his eyes possessing a type of mania that chills many deep into the marrow of their bones. Worst yet are the scars that adorn his pale, slightly muscular figure. Old scars that have healed over, ranging from gun shots, scratches, knife wounds, even a couple of burns dot his chest, arms and back. But none of that compares to the madness behind his eyes, the true evil that he lets nestle there behind those dark orbs. And those that see it and live, well, they are rarely the same after.
Clothing: Outside of the Jack O’ Lantern persona, Steven dresses just like everyone else. He prefers the comfort of jeans and sneakers, but his shirts are usually nice, button up shirts of a variety of rich colors. However, when Steven is dressed-to-impress, he can wear nice suits, usually black, with a fine tie that always seems just a little off-kilter in order to make him appear more charming and roguish. Lastly, he does has a small collections of hats and beanies that either goes with what he wears or are for appropriate weather conditions.
Jack O’ Lantern is a whole different wardrobe. Currently he wears the original Jack’s uniform, consisting of a dark green, mesh/Kevlar mix that allows him protection from most enemies. The armor fits over his body perfectly, protecting most of his body. Over his feet he wears thick boots with metal in the heels that allows him to stay attached to his hoverboard. Over his hands he wears deep green gloves that are similar in appearance to his boots but do not possess the same metal. A belt with several pouches and attachments for pumpkin bombs circles his waist so he always has an arsenal at the ready. Lastly, on occasion, he will don a tattered, deep red or purple cape that only adds to the nightmarish figure he cuts.
Weapons / Armor / Gear: Taking the leftover items from Jason Macendale, the current Jack O’ Lantern has all of his paraphernalia and a few new things that he has added himself:
Weapons –
- Pumpkin Grenades: Much like Green Goblin and Hobgoblin, Jack O’ Lantern main arsenal does revolve mainly around grenades that come in a variety of “flavors”. These grenades include: Concussive, Smoke, Tear Gas, Hallucinogenic Gas, and Knock-Out Gas. Each of these bombs either look like pumpkins or are either spherical and orange.
- Wrist Blasters: Jack does also possess wrist blasters. These weapons allow him to deliver a shot of electricity that can range upwards of 35 feet. Additionally these blasters have a special compartment that both houses and fires smaller grenades called “Ghost-grabbers” that, upon contact, explode and cover the victim with a thick, sticky, semi-translucent film. When used correctly, Jack O’ Lantern and lock someone in place or even asphyxiate a person if the gel covers their face.
- Heat Scythe: The last weapon of his arsenal is a single-handed, curved scythe that he carries on his belt. This weapon is incredibly sharp and made of vibranium. Beyond just the wielding the weapon expertly, there is a button on it that allows the weapon to heat up, making it red and looking as if it is casting off waves of fire. When this is enacted, the weapon both burns and can slice through most metals.
Armor – Additionally with his weaponry, Jack O’ Lantern is perfectly protected due to the body armor that he found. To this day is still strong and only requires minor upkeep from him to keep it in working condition.
- Body Armor: Jack’s body armor is made to last. Originally worn by Jason Macendale, the armor is made of a metal-mesh that is covered in Kevlar panels. This means that his armor is bulletproof, and flame proof, offering him a great deal of protection, even going so far as to stop a 7-pound bazooka anti-tank warhead. His armor can take a beating but even that has its limitations as the rigid uniform that slow most quick movements.
- Flaming Pumpkin Helmet: The most important part of Jack O’ Lantern’s gear is his iconic helmet. Made to look like a real, carved Jack O’ Lantern, the round, bulletproof helmet is surrounded by a constant ring of fire, adding to his hellish look. But the helmet is more than just for show. It is equipped with hi-tech circuitry which provides telescopic, infrared, and night vision. Additionally the helmet provides Jack with a 360 scanning capability which allows him to see things from all around. And, even though the helmet looks to be on fire, it is a low temperature, low-density flame that does not harm him. Lastly, the helmet can provide up to 3 hours of oxygen, both allowing him to breathe and stay cool.
Gear –
- One-Man Hovercraft: Another important piece of equipment is the orange hovercraft that Jack O’ Lantern utilizes for his transportation. Looking much like a top, the device allows him freedom of movement; by tilting forward, backward, left, or right, the craft will carry Jack O’ Lantern in the corresponding direction, even going so far as traveling up to 70 mph, or allowing him to hover in a single spot. The magnetic surface links with his boots, making it harder for him to fall off, yet if need be, he can easily disengage from the device, kick, etc. The hovercraft runs on a high density, lithium battery that can be run for 24 hours before it needs to be recharged.
Skills / Education/ Training: Skills:
- Boxing / Street Fighting: Due to his early induction into the criminal world, Steven learned fast how to defend itself. First it was just how to throw a punch, and later it evolved into grappling, street fighting, boxing, and some minor judo. While not the most skilled fighter in the world, he can definitely hold his own one-on-one.
- Mechanical / Electronic / Chemistry: Steven does possess a surprising amount of technical and scientific school. Though he only had a mild interest in it growing up, being an effective thief and saboteur meant that he needed to learn how to get past alarms and hotwire vehicles. Additionally, this knowledge grew when he discovered the original Jack O’ Lantern’s blueprints and chemical formulas. Over the years he has read them extensively and has become quite proficient at maintaining all aspects of his gear.
Education: Steven only possesses a high school diploma as he quickly decided that college was not for him. He has a basic education, except for when it comes to mechanical devices and chemistry. Those are self-taught from a combination of books and Jason Macendale’s leftover blueprints on Jack O’ Lantern paraphernalia, which have been studied extensively over the years. Training:
- Boxing / Street Fighting: He learned his fighting skills on the streets and continuously trains in order to maintain his fighting shape.
- Flight: By reading journals from the original Jack O’ Lantern, he has learned how to accurately fly his hovercraft with little to no issues. Time and practice make great teachers.
Powers: Absolutely no super powers. Steven is a normal man with normal human frailties for someone of his age and physique.
Weakness: Even though Steven has not superhuman abilities, that does not mean he does not suffer from weakness. Like any human being he has his limitations:
- Sociopath: Steven clearly has several issues that stem from his past. Because of his undiagnosed problem, he is prone to some rather disturbing behavior. He enjoys seeing others suffer, he is a great liar, and extremely intelligent, unfortunately all of this is mixed in a dangerous cocktail. He has no problem putting innocent civilians in danger and is willing to take money for the harm of others.
- Ego: Even before donning the Jack O’ Lantern persona, Steven had an ego on him. He believes he is better than most people, especially those in law enforcement, government, or the heroic business. He loves to match wits and physically prowess, but this, sadly, that lead him into many dangerous situations, many times causing him to bite off more than he can chew.
- Oh the Humanity: Despite the ego and thrill-seeking tendencies, the armor and hi-tech weaponry, Steven is still just a man in a suit. He suffers from all the same frailties such as hunger, sleep, bodily harm, etc. If he is attacked outside of his armor, or even faces against an opponent stronger than his armor and weaponry, Steven can be harmed or die as easily as any other normal man.
- Criminal Acitivies: Because his lifestyle requires a constant upkeep for day-to-day living, new and better equipment, etc., Steven has little chance of being reformed. He has grown accustomed to his way of life which is a constant cycle of stealing money and spending money so that he can steal more money. Because of this Steven really doesn’t want any other life, especially since this line of work allows him to harm others.
Personality: Psychotic thrill-seeker. Steven has always been on the cusp of madness, trying to retain who he is in a world that thinks his every way of thinking is just wrong. But Steven does not let that get him down. He is the type of person that knows when to play rules, and certainly when to break them. As a matter of fact, both his public and secret personas brings out some rather interesting behaviors:
- Public –
While out in public, and not in costume, Steven looks and acts just like everybody else. He usually seems to have a smile on his face (even if it does seem fake at times), he likes to crack jokes, he can even appear to be soft spoken and kind. He is the quintessential definition of a normal man of his age and appearance being absolutely normal in society; he is even an avid coin collector. Of course, such behavior only adds to hide certain aspects of who he really is.
- Secret –
When left in secret, Steven has proven to be a far darker man than he lets on to be. He is closed off, quiet, and a times a bit demented. He wants to see things suffer, takes joy out of harming life itself. He is greedy, power hungry, and anxiously awaits the next thrill as he goes toe-to-toe with those people who seek to only do good in the world. For him, Steven simply does not like the majority of people, finds their habits annoying or bothersome. Steven though feels the most comfortable when he dons his Jack O’ Lantern armor and mask. It feels like his true self. He cannot wait to get his assignments started and even seeks out to take more dangerous routes in order to draw attention of authorities and heroes alike. However, that does not mean that he acts stupidly as Jack O’ Lantern, quite the contrary. Yes he will boast and take verbal jabs at his opponents, but despite his inclination for thrills and to cause harm, Steven wants to both succeed and live and he will do so however is necessary.
In the end, Steven is sadistic, clever, and not afraid to challenge the authority of whoever gets in his way.
History: Little is known of the true history of the 2nd incarnation of Jack O’ Lantern. The only facts that have come to light are that the man behind the mask is named Steven Mark Levins, and he was born in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois. Rumors state that Steven was a troubled young man, taking pleasure in the harming of animals, starting fights, and being emotionally detached from his two loving parents. Some would even go so far as to say that it probably would have been better to assign a full-time psychiatrist to the troubled boy, maybe even lock him away. Sadly, parents who are trying to be good rarely commit such acts and instead try to compensate with love and attention. Neither of those attempts would keep them alive much longer. However, as said, there was little people did about Steven when he was young except utter “that poor boy”. Being as clever as he was, he used this to garner sympathy and manipulation over the people of his small, sleepy little town. Steven learned that in order to do what he wanted, he needed to keep playing by the rules on the outside, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t break them when no one was looking.
Troubled throughout most of his life, a combination of his past and his being put into the foster-care system, Steven would eventually find himself in New York City under the care of new, less-than-caring parents. It didn’t matter to him, though; less watchful eyes meant that there was only more that he could get into. And that was exactly what led to Steven to a life of crime. Growing up in New York, Steven was indoctrinated early on into criminal activities. Theft, assault, sabotage, you name it, he was involved. Steven had a knack for crime, even going so far as to call it his “calling” in life. Things he wanted, he took, and there was never any fear of retribution from the law. Sure, he did a couple of stints in jail but they never lasted long as he knew how to behave himself and carry on the sheen of a good citizen. However, eventually Steven would find that there was even more that destiny had in store. It was during a particularly bad heist. The pair he was working with were incompetent and set off an unexpected alarm. Because of this, Steven found himself separated from the group and on the run. But, as it turns out, blindly running through alleys and sewers would eventually find him something far more valuable than just money. While dodging into a sewer grate to escape a passing police cruiser, Steven had unknowingly stumbled across a former lair of Jason Macendale, at one time known as the nefarious villain Jack O’ Lantern, before abandoning his gear to take on the identity of the Hobgoblin. With the gear and weaponry just lying there, unused, Steven decided that it was time for the Jack O’ Lantern to make a comeback! The next few years would see the return of Jack O’ Lantern to the skies above New York and, quite frankly, anywhere he was paid to be. Hiring himself out as a terrorist, assassin, even a simple thug or saboteur, to the highest bidder, Steven found a small nitch of wealth, recognition, and some good times! However, his outings as Jack have certainly garnered him villainy amongst the superhero population. Many times he has squared off against the likes of such people as Captain America, Spider-Man, and several others. More often than not, Jack O’ Lantern has lost, either barely escaping with his life or being locked away in jail, but every time Jack manages to find a way back, settling once more into his place in the world of crime.
