Tony Stark at one point trusted James so much that he was given the role of Iron Man, a sure sign of his character by being given such job. His ability to finish his mission is from his determination to finish what he starts and follow orders, being a well-trained soldier.

History:
Stationed in South Vietnam during the United State’s involvement in the Southeast Asia, James Rupert Rhodes was a pilot for the Marines. On a routine mission over the jungles of South Vietnam, Rhodes’ chopper was shot down by an enemy rocket. However, managing to land his aircraft due to his expertise piloting, Rhodes began to fix his aircraft to make it flyable once again. While making fixes to his chopper, Tony Starks dressed in his IronMan armor was running to the US defense perimeter after having just avenged an old friend. After figuring out IronMan was a friendly after a skirmish with the VietCong, Rhodes allowed Stark to charge his armor by draining the Helicopter’s battery. Continuing their journey to the defense perimeter, the two uncovered a hidden enemy rocket base and thus destroyed it and stole a helicopter, heading back to the US base. After the incident, Rhodes was offered a job by Stark as his personal pilot and James declined. However, later on Rhodes accepted said job and also became Stark’s chief of aviation engineering, and helped IronMan battle several enemies.

When Tony Stark fell into alcoholism and was unable to perform his duties as IronMan, Rhodes donned the armor in order to perform said duties. His first was to protect Starks International from Magma, after which Starks told Rhodes to continue as IronMan as he continued his troubles in alcoholism. Learning to use the armor, Rhodes duties made him battle many of Stark’s enemies, but eventually Obadiah Stane managed to take Starks International. However, Rhodes found a way for Stark to keep the IronMan armors, and Rhodes then worked as a mercenary in order to make money and pay for his adventures and armor. Once Tony Stark recovered from alcoholism, he started Circuits Maximus with Rhodes, but Stark told Rhodes to retain his role as IronMan, allowing Rhodes to enter the ranks of Earth’s superheroes. Eventually approached by Hawkeye, chairman of the West Coast Avengers, Rhodes was recruited into the group. It was after he earned his stripes in the group that he told them the truth and disclosed he had been Tony Stark’s replacement.

The New IronMan

Early in the use of the IronMan armor, it was discovered that the cybernetics in the armor were not tailored for the use of Rhodes and thus had led to Rhodes having severe headaches after use. After working with Stark for some time, Rhodes began to become delusional and believed Stark didn’t want him to have the armor anymore and he became irritable and hostile towards Stark. After Rhodes behavior led to the endangerment of many innocent and civilian lives, Stark donned a new armor he had created and stopped Rhodes. Ashamed and embarrassed, Rhodes left to cure his headaches since the recalibrating the helmet didn’t fix the problem. While Rhodes went to get healed by Shaman, an Indian mystic, Stark tendered Rhodes resignation to Hawkeye who invited the original IronMan to use their lab in order to make a new armor. Upon returning, Rhodes assisted Stark in battling Obadiah Stane who had created new machines to attack Stark, but was injured in an explosion that destroyed Circuits Maximus. He was thus unable to help IronMan on the last assault on Stane which ended up killing the man.

Still ashamed from his previous irrational behavior and worried about his injuries, Rhodes did not work with the Avengers and preferred not to don the armor anymore. However, upon hearing that Tony Stark had “died,” Rhodes was appointed CEO of Stark Enterprises. Upon being named CEO, the company created the War Machine armor and Rhodes briefly replaced IronMan in the Weat Coast Avengers. When Rhodes discovered Stark had not really died, Rhodes became furious and resigned as CEO as well as ending his friendship with Tony. However, using his War Machine armor, Rhodes would team up with Tony to battle evil but their friendship was never the same.

Going on his own solo career, War Machine started by traveling to Imaya in African in order to free a peace activist. It was at this same time that Cable and Deathlok headed to the war torn country and Nick Fury sent a team from SHIELD to help stabilize the country. As a result of the war and violence, a revolution led to the overthrow of the dictator but a mysterious character murdered the peace activist. War Machine stayed and worked for Worldwatch for a while until his need for someone to repair his armor led him back to Stark. The two butt heads about each other's recent escapades but was interrupted by a attack from the Mandarin. The two defeated the Mandarin and War Machine's armor was fixed afterwards.

When visiting family in Philadelphia, Rhodes discovered that a group of armor wearing hunters. He tracked the hunter leader down and after witnessing the atrocities committed by said group, he had to warn World watch and Force Works.

After that he was called to investigate some Neo-Nazi activity and was accompanied by Nick Fury. Upon arriving they discovered a evil group trying to send modern weapons to WWII nazis. Rhodes went back in time and met with a young Nick Fury, Howling Commandos, Captain America, and Bucky Barnes. Unfortunately after their mission was complete, the War Machine armor was lost back in that time era.

Now Rhodes has earned a new set of armor, more updated than the previous he had. He's currently working with SHIELD, and is on the Pro-Registration side of the debate.
