I'm sure his inability to "fix" Burnett and the whispers that Burnett, Hughes and Joba didn't like working with him did him in.

Burnett is inconsistent as hell and Hughes and Joba are busts. What the hell could Island have done with those three piles of shet?

That's what everyone, myself included, assumed, but when you think about it realistically, the two of them dominated before they got to Trenton/Scranton, and always had the stuff to make minor league hitters look stupid. He didn't change or improve anything for those guys. I'm sure the promotion was a combination of Ron Guidry not being a real pitching coach and Hughes/Chamberlain being familiar with Eiland.
