Joe Torre cost the Yankees a World Series in 1997 and was a non-factor in their 1998 title.

At least according to David Wells.

The former Yankees pitcher again had strong words for the retiring Dodgers manager when asked about his time with New York.

“We won it 1998, but we had such good pitching, everything else was there we could have had Mickey Mouse manage that team and we would have won,” Wells said of Torre’s role for a team that won a franchise record 114 games and swept the Padres in the World Series.

“It didn’t matter who was managing. The player and the product on the field were so good.”

Wells’ problem with Torre stems from the previous year, the pitcher's first with the Yankees. Wells was frustrated that Torre decided not to start him in the opener of the ALDS against the Indians. Wells instead started and won Game 3, but was not available for deciding Game 5, in which Cleveland prevailed.

“In ‘97 I felt we were going to win it all,” Wells, an analyst with TBS, told The Post. “I felt I should have started the series off against Cleveland because you look at my track record against Cleveland in the playoffs and we go to play them and I’m pitching third.

“I just didn’t think that was a smart thing to do. I owned Cleveland. Those guys couldn’t beat me for anything. I knew that, they knew that. And that’s what’s disappointing because we had the best team in baseball.”

For the record, Wells was 20-4 with a 3.78 ERA against the Indians in his career, but 0-1 with a 6.91 ERA in three starts against them in 1997, according to BaseballReference.com.

In an interview with Yahoo! last week Wells called Torre a “coward” for having pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre deliver the news to him.

"I don't like him at all. As a manager, I think he's terrible,” Wells told the website. “He wasn't a fair manager. He didn't treat people the same. He definitely didn't treat me the same ... If he tells you anything else, he's a liar."

Torre, who made some harsh comments about Wells in his book last year, told MLB.com he had no idea Wells held such animosity toward him and thought the two were fine when he met him at the ceremony for George Steinbrenner last week.

"I don't even remember that," Torre said. "I feel badly David think he was picked on or not treated fairly. That was not our intent. When he could have left after '98, he chose to come back. It must not have been too bad. I saw David in New York. We shook hands. I thought everything was OK."

Wells said that was more about paying respect to his former owner, not his former manager.

“We were at an event and we had to respect the man who we were honoring and that was George Steinbrenner,” Wells said about the recently deceased owner having a monument put in Yankee Stadium.

Even though Wells had more harsh criticism for Torre, he said it’s time to move on.

“As a player-manager sometimes you don’t see eye-to-eye on things,” Wells said. “The tension between him and I — sometimes I’m outspoken — but they should be put to rest. It’s more about baseball and the postseason everyone’s exciting. It shouldn’t be an issue.”

Joe Torre is a master at tugging at the teardrops of the fans and media, and that statement is proof of that. David Wells is 100% right, yet NY fans and media will take the side of the poor innocent old man who was a mastermind (in their eyes) in the dugout.

Don't these people know that it's the manager who wins the games? Ask the Dodgers.
