Why Hughes at Yankee Stadium and Pettitte on the road?

1.24 WHIP - top 20 in the league, second on the staff to CC. Better K/BB ratio (2.52) fewer H/9IP (8.3) than Pettitte, and he was sharp his last 3 starts while Pettitte struggled after missing what, 3 months? But whether you think Hughes is the Yankees 2nd best pitcher isn't even the point...

Push come to shove Phil Hughes' only real problem this year has been giving up Home Runs like they are going out of style, which is why he has a 3.47 era on the road and a 4.66 era at home. Pettitte is Left Handed and even when he struggles he neutralizes Yankee stadium and HRs in general to a degree. Yet Girardi has decided to throw his right handed pitcher with HR problems in game 3 at Yankee stadium instead of Target field when that entire team hits their home runs against righties on the road.

Girardi is obviously covering his ass against being questioned about Hughes starting a potential game 5 if things don't go well. He's thinking about game 5 before its even played when this team rarely plays you well.

Pettitte in game 2 is the right move. What if the Yanks lose tonight; you want Phil Hughes, who was as gutless and spineless as they come last year in the playoffs, pitching facing a 0-2 hole? Then again in Game 5 if the Yankees manage to win 2 games?

Hughes better not sh*t his pants. The Twins are dead in the water right now. He better not give them ANY life.

If I was Giradi, I'd tell Hughes to be aggressive, give me 5 good innings and into the 6th out by out, then I'd line up your most aggressive pitchers, i.e. Woods, Mitre, Robinson/Joba and then Mo. Any reliever that shits loses his share of the wildcard popcorn.

He'll give up a couple of homeruns to lefties despite pitching well otherwise. Story of the year for him. 6 innings, 4 runs, 6k-2bb, 2hr
