Derek Jeter is becoming a disaster. I really fear the kind of contract Cashman is going to give him. Two years is the max I would give Jeter at no more than $12m per year. Two years $24m, take it or leave it. Unfortunately, Cashman is going to start the process with four years $20m per.

Are you mad? Two years, $24M? Jeter would spit in his face and the fans would set Cashman's car on fire.

On the real: I would be more than willing to let Jeter walk (as ya'll know, record-chasing and "sentimental value" means nothing to me and I don't think players are "owed" for what they've done in the past), but there are no real alternatives at shortstop this year. Had Hanley Ramirez not re-signed a couple years ago, he'd have been a free agent after this season and there would've been no question who I'd want them to go after. At this point, they don't really have a choice but to re-sign Captain Groundout.

The Yankees are going to make a sh*t load of money on Jeter chasing 3,000 hits. Depending on how long the contract is, 2,000 runs and to a lessor extent 300 HR are possibilities as well. As he approaches his final season merchandise sales will be nuts. Derek Jeter the baseball player is going to be overpaid for his abilities, but that isn't because the team is afraid of him or the fans or because they feel he is owed whatever he wants. Its because Derek Jeter the product is worth significantly more to the Yankees.

I see that and I used to use that argument. But then I thought, how much more could they make off merchandise when they've already got the most popular sports brand in the world (up there with Manchester United)? And how much would the fan disapproval really affect ratings and attendance? They'd cry their lil' eyes out and rant on WFAN, but they wouldn't stop coming to the park or stop watching. I think winning is as big a draw as anything. I've seen those 80s Mattingly highlights with the empty stands and he was probably as beloved as Jeter. If there was a player available who could help this team win more than Jeter, I'd risk drawing the ire of fans and losing out on some No. 2 t-shirt sales. Because if Hanley came here and hit .330/30 and stole 45 bases, they'd shut the f*ck up soon enough and you'd see some (whatever # Ramirez would change to) jerseys popping up.
