Yankees Close To Acquiring Lance Berkman By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30, 2010 at 4:00pm CST] The Yankees are on the verge of acquiring Lance Berkman, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Steinbrenners have given pre-approval for the Yankees to take on a major salary such as Berkman's. The Yankees appear to be progressing quickly toward a Berkman deal, according to Olney (Twitter links). |

Can he still play a little outfield? I know he's mainly a first baseman now. As long as they didn't give up much, I like it. A switch hitter who can use a change of scenery and as recently as last year had a pretty decent season. He has a 2011 option ($15M salary or $2M buyout), so he would probably be a two-month rental. |

Hopefully moron Cashman will not give them too much. Berkman isn't the same hitter he used to be (steroids), but he is a hell of a lot better than Timz and Miranda. |

Rosenthal reports Berkman approved the trade earlier today, but because of his 10-5 rights 24 hours has to pass before the trade is approved. |

Deal is done according to Joel Sherman. Still have to wait 24 hours which is a joke. |

Hopefully they gave up nothing. Not bad to take a shot at him over the slop we have. |

Like Rob said, he's a broken down ex-steroids user, but it's a big time improvement over the disaster that was NJ and Thames and Miranda. Good move. |

I wouldn't say he's broken down; he's still a 25 HR 100 RBI guy with a great eye. He's basically a much better Nick Johnson. But he had some amazing years a few years back!! |

139 OPS+ last year and he's only 34. .925 OPS in July. I like this move a lot. It seems Cashman waited around for everyone go crazy and throw away their prospects on ok players (Minnesota), then he put out the word that the Yankees had some money available and could take on an annoying contract, but were not willing to give much up in terms of prospects. Thats apparently when Houston stepped forward. I'm feelin' his style. |

Wow. The Astros are also picking up a lot of the money left on the deal. I don't get how some of these teams operate. |

Just checked and he has a (very unlikely to be picked up) 15 million dollar option for next year. 2 mill buyout. |

Looks like Melancon is in the trade. With the year he's having its hard to care. Getting jerked around seems to have effected his confidence according to common sense and some of his coaches. Change of venue should do him some good and getting something very useful for him is good for the Yankees. This is probably why the Stros are eating some of the money. |

Melancon will probably be good in the NL. LaTroy Hawkins left the Yankees for Houston and was great! |
