Welcome to Over-Managing 101, I am Professor Girardi. Please take out your syllabi. Today we will learn how to mis-manage a bullpen and lose your DH. Next week we will have a pop quiz on all of my unoriginal nicknames for my players.

Where is Joba????????

Joba threw a whopping 23 pitches yesterday. You certainly can't go to him in a one-run game in the 8th after that workhorse of an outing. What a joke.

We got a "Phyllis" outing from Hughes yet still had a chance to win but will lose because of the moron manager. I am furious.

Retardi is a joke!! This loss is on him, barring a miracle comeback.

And this bullpen sucks. Give Melancon a shot.

Bunting with Cervelli who's done nothing but hit with RISP all year was a stroke of genius. And of course the game came down to Randi Lose, who has no business being on this team. I want Cashman and Retardi out of here.

Cervelli has been nearly perfect with RISP. Someone said it earlier today, it may have been you. This loser misses managing in the NL.

Moo said it and he's absolutely right. I don't care what happens this season, even if we win the WS again I want Retardi out of here. I don't think any Yankee fan with a brain would give a shet if he's not the manager next season.

So many people love this guy. I hate his moves. I hate his voice. I hate his facial expressions. I hate his braces. I'm telling you, even if they don't win the World Series, expect a three-year extension.

The WS title last year probably did buy him 3 more years, but I can hope that maybe he'll say something stupid that pisses somebody in the front office off and they tell him to take a hike.

I'd also like to know when you say so many people like this guy? Are you talking about a lot of Yankee fans you talk to, because the ones I talk to, hate him.

Yes, I know some fans who like him, and I am talking real fans. I'm often able to convince people who are on the fence about him that he's not a good manager though.

I'm surprised there are people who like him. Most I know wish we still had Torre. I wouldn't go that far, I thought a change was needed and Girardi was the guy I wanted so I admit in hindsight that was very foolish, Girardi is an absolute imbecile. Mattingly may have been a better choice.

I'm working on the person closest to me who defends Girardi. He happens to be my Dad, so I can't go too overboard on him, but we've been firing emails back and forth about him the past couple of days. He just sent me one ripping on Thames in the outfield and I replied ripping on Girardi for the Cervelli bunt.

Everyone knows I am the biggest Mattingly fan out there, but I didn't think he was ready. I wanted Girardi. I was wrong. I can't call the era a complete disaster since one World Series was won, but that was more despite his efforts.

I liked Torre, but I was ready to move on. How about trying to lure back Mattingly this offseason before he signs on to take over for Torre?

I'd take almost anybody over Girardi at this point. I've had enough of him, he makes me angry every time I see him wandering around the dugout looking at statistics.

I know, I can't even look at him. He's all nervous and twitchy. He had the reputation of being a hardass. He's a geek.

Maybe after the Cubs are done having a terrible year they can fire Lou and 'steal' Girardi away from us by way overpaying for him. He grew up a Cubs fan, I'm sure he'd love to manage them.

I agree with all this. Girardi tends to make me sick. He thinks way too much and tends to f*ck up more then he does good. And I HATE the Sac Bunt. That sh*t seems to work for every team but us. Every time we do a sac bunt, the next 2 guys never get the runner home. I'm sick of it. I was actually hoping Cervelli would foul 2 bunts off so he could have to swing with 2 strikes. Thats how much I hate it. I'd rather have 3 guys with a chance to get a base hit, then 2 guys with a chance to maybe get a sac fly or ground out and score a run. But these Sac Bunts completely piss me off, especially with the guys we had up. Oh well. This year vs Boston after 8 games is better then last year but still, sh*t pisses me off. :furious:

I agreed with the bunt. That 11-for-14 w/ RISP isn't something that can be maintained and Cervelli has cooled off the last few days anyway. Don't fall in love with 14 at-bats. Averages and the laws of baseball say he'd have most likely made an out in that at-bat anyway. Do you chance it and hope that it's a soft grounder toward the first base hole? I like bunts in situations like that where you need to tie and you get the runner to third. You trust that Thames/Miranda can get a fly ball and it doesn't come down to Winn. If Papelbon didn't make a nice snag of Miranda's grounder up the middle, they probably win and it's all moot.

I don't like Girardi. I wanted him fired last April. But let's no lose sight of what cost them the game. This wasn't the manager's fault. When the setup man, the defense and the closer all fail miserably, you can't put the blame on the manager because you didn't like the bunt call. This game should've been a simple 5-1 or 5-2 win.

Strider is right. I don't like bunts, but if Cervelli swings and makes an out there and the runner stays at second then Girardi is still gonna get crucified simply because the option to bunt was there. I like Girardi about as much or as little as I like any manager because I think Managers matter very, very little in baseball. I'll even go as far as saying that hitting and pitching coaches are more important. Ozzie Guillen is terrible and the Sox won a WS... None of us like Girardi and the Yankees won the series last year... Lou Pinella seems to cause more messes than he cleans up... I'm even off Soscias dick after last years post season....As far as I'm concerned Madden and Leyland are the only two managers worth dick, and I'll probably change my mind about them too. The more I watch baseball the less I think managers have any on the field relevance.

The real reason for the last two losses is the bullpen, namely Joba Chamberlain. The one solace I can take in his crappy, inconsistent season is that it will hopefully shut all the Goose Gossages of the world the hell up long enough for the Yankees to do the right thing with Joba (obviously not this year since the pen is doodoo) and either have him start or get him out of here. His struggles last year clearly weren't caused by him "not being able to handle starting", because the same sh*t is happening now.

Yep. I've been saying for a while that the bullpen wouldn't be panacea for Joba. Starting or setting up, if he's throwing 93 mph with poor control and can't snap the slider like he used to, he's gonna get lit. And it's worse when you get lit as a setup man because the team doesn't have the innings to try to get it back. If he can't regain the stuff he once had and be consistent, then it'd behoove them to trade him while there's still decent value.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "any relevance," but yeah. It's almost a free-money job. When a high compliment for a manager is, "He handles the media well," you know what's up. It's rare that a manager makes a decision that isn't obvious (and it ain't that brilliant since they've got a bunch of assistants and a "bench coach" - another free-money gig). A good manager is one who doesn't cost the team 10 games a year with his stupidity. The hardest part of the job is the travel and staying awake past midnight 162 times a year. That Joe Torre makes more than Bill Belichick is laughable.
