Tomlinson to become a Jet

I have not confirmed it beyond a shadow of a doubt, because there is some thought by those close to LaDainian Tomlinson that he is still considering his options.

But the team that just two months ago ended one of the best Chargers’ seasons ever now appears to have absconded with one of the best Chargers’ players ever.

According to three people with knowledge of the process, Tomlinson has decided to become a New York Jet.

"It's 100 percent," one source said. "Done deal."

Tomlinson is expected to announce the decision today or tomorrow.

However, one source cautioned late Saturday night that a decision has not yet been officialy made.

After nine years as a San Diego icon, Tomlinson was released in February. His 2009 season saw him post career-low numbers in carries and yards, but he left the franchise holding 28 team records and as the NFL’s eighth-leading rusher all-time and third-leading touchdown scorer ever.

In New York, he will back up Shonn Greene.

Tomlinson also visited the Minnesota Vikings last week, spending two days in Minneapolis before going to New York. He returned to San Diego on Saturday.

There have also been reports the New Orleans Saints were interested in bringing Tomlinson for a visit. But the lure of playing in the Big Apple and under Brian Schottenheimer, the Jets offensive coordinator and son of former Chargers coach and LT confidant Marty Schottenheimer, evidently won out.

Is he the LT of old? Of course not, with that being said I wouldn't mind him getting 10-15 touches behind Shonn Greene.

Why didn't they just keep Jones? Tomlinson is washed up.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the answer is yes -- L.T. will be a New York Jet in 2010.

"It's 100%," one of Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee's three sources said. "Done deal."

Tomlinson could reveal his decision as soon as Sunday or Monday, though the paper leaves open the possibility that the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints may still be in play.

Tomlinson would likely become the Jets' third-down back and primary backup to second-year man Shonn Greene. L.T. visited the Jets Thursday and Friday after a trip to Minnesota earlier in the week. New York led the NFL in rushing offense in 2009 but cut No. 1 back Thomas Jones earlier this month.

Tomlinson, the 2006 MVP, rushed for 730 yards in 2009, the lowest total of his nine-year career. -- Nate Davis

Vinnie - LaDainian Tomlinson is a Jet. About 5 years ago I would have been running around like a mad man cause I would have been so happy by this news. Right now, kind of happy. Tomlinson is a shadow of his former self, but maybe we can catch lightning in a bottle with him. After cutting ties with Jones another running back to go along with Greene was a need.

Mattingly23 - Let's get one thing straight right away. There is only one LT in New York. That stolen nickname will have to stay behind in San Diego.

Vinnie - Hence the reason I called him by his full name and not that nickname. I can't stand the damn Giants but I do respect the one and only, great one, LT.

It sure looks like you called him LT here!

It's funny that I did that because I really do give people a hard time when they call him "LT". I constantly bash people and tell them there is only ONE LT. Here I am calling him that.

2-year deal with the Jets. We'll see how it pans out but I like the move (though my first choice would've been to re-up with Jones). Overall this is one of the rare years where I'm actually pretty satisfied with the moves the Jets have made. Of course that's just on paper, on the field watch all these moves end up being terrible.

Prime Tom Lynson in San Diego was an absolute monster, one of the best backs ever. But he was a shell of himself towards the end years with San Diego. He really outstayed his time, although he did decently for a year with the Jets. But I think the Jets would have likely been better had they just kept Danny Woodcock as their complement to Greene.

What's the deal with Joe McKnight? I didn't see many Jets games last year, but he looked decent carrying the ball. The Jets have had good runblocking for years.

I've always screamed for more carries for McKnight, played well when he got a few touches his rookie year, plus when Tomlinson sat against Buffalo in Week 17 during the 2010 season and Greene got limited action in that game, I'm pretty sure McKnight carried for close to 140 yards in that game; maybe more. He's shown flashes, I know they are concerned about his size, durability and a shitty work ethic from what I hear, but to me he'd be perfect to get a consistent 10 carries a game behind a guy like Greene. Last year though he didn't look good at all carrying the football, but then again the Jet line not only was having a problem blocking for Sanchez but they just weren't opening up any holes for the running game on a consistent basis. We are desperate to replace Wayne Hunter at Right Tackle, and losing Mangold for that short time last year certainly didn't help either. There is no question what kind of play maker McKnight is on special teams, but I'd like to see more of him catching passes out of the backfield and running a good 8-10 times per game.
