Eli On Verge Of Becoming Highest Paid NFL Player; Per Year

Chris Mortenson's on Mike and Mike. I didn't listen too intently, but apparently his deal is gonna be like 7 years, 110 mil with 35 guaranteed and he gets like 45 mil the first two seasons, which will make him the highest paid player on average per season.

I'm sickened by this. Eli is maybe the 10th best QB in the NFL. He's a big liability at home and was a disgrace in playoffs. His regular season stats, in his best year, pale to most QBs. So, basically the 07-08 playoffs, where he just played well enough not to beat us, bought him the highest per year salary in the NFL? Damn, the Giants organization setting the bar low. I was hoping they let him play this season before extending, if at all.

Unbelievable, Striz and PBalls said it best, I can think of 10 QBs who are better then Eli. Overpaid slob.

Ian O'Connor and Don La Greca are on 1050 sounding like assholes. They said the only QBs that are definitely better than Eli are Peyton and Brady; that he's certainly top 5 and possibly top 3. Said La Greca, when challenged by a caller, "C'mon. He's better than Drew Brees! When you draft a quarterback, are you hoping for him to lead the league in yards or win you a championship?" I've met La Greca and he seemed like a nice guy. But if I'd been next to him when he said that dumb sh*t, I might've slapped him in his f*cking mouth. When a guy admits that he cried after the Giants beat the Patriots, he exposes himself as a pompom-waver who, on this topic, certainly has a skewed opinion. Eli brought him teers of joy, so there's no way he's gonna spit the real on him.

I also think it's a bitch move to cry after your team wins a championship. Wedding? Ehhh, maybe. Birth of your child? Soft, but understanble. After a Super Bowl? Man the f*ck up.

By that notion Roethlisberger is twice as good as Manning. On that list I would take Eli over Hasselback and Warner, and possibly McNabb and Palmer over injury concerns. I'm also not a huge believe in Palmer.

It's only like $35 million in guaranteed money. You should know better than to complain about football contracts. QB contracts get more expensive each time. Whichever QB is next in line will get the highest contract.

I don't have a problem with a QB getting a big contract. It's the most important position. I have a problem with Eli getting a huge contract. Except for the rookie QBs picked in the top 5 - rookie wage scale is all f*cked up - shouldn't players be paid according to their standing amongst their peers? The 11th-13th best quarterback shouldn't be the highest paid.

I hope that contract is frontloaded like crazy because they're gonna have to re-sign/sign other players down the road to stay in contention and I don't want Eli restricting anything. My hope, which might be unrealistic, is that like $30M of that bonus is paid in the first two years so if he sucks or continues to be mediocre, they can cut his ass and limit the damage. Have him at a low base salary the first couple years and overload on the bonus so if in 2012, we're looking at 3,300 yards/22 TDs/17 INTs and WTF!? balls fluttering in the breeze, the release wouldn't murder the cap. But, most likely, the sh*t is spready evenly over the first four years. :no1:

I don't love Palmer, but he's without question more talented than Eli. The arm strength and accuracy isn't even worth comparison. And, at his best, when healthy, he's done more (unless you wanna use team success). And he's only a year older.

McNabb's injury history is kind of overblown. He gets dinged up, but he's really only had two seasons f*cked by injuries. And in both of those years, his numbers were still comparable to Eli's best season. With fewer weapons and an offense that requires more of him.

Who is a better long-term investment, Eli or Warner/Hasselbeck? Eli. In fact, you might even rather have Eli on your team because of that and the durability. But who's the better player? Warner and Hasselbeck are better.

And let's not forget that what Eli accomplished last year - his first season where he wasn't well below league average in INT percentage and completition percentage - was with the league's best running game, the best offensive line and a defense that was, I think, top 5. He played in a ball control offense, was asked to simply manage games and had more talent at receiver than people will admit. All that got him the 14th best QB rating.

Like was said on air, the guaranteed money doesn't matter, since they aren't releasing him. He's here for the duration of the contract, unfortunately.

Who cares where you guys have him ranked among other QBs? Are those guys available? Maybe Kent Graham can begin his third stint as Giants QB?

I don't understand what you're trying to say. So, since Eli is better than past dreadful starting Giant QBs, he has the right to hold the team for a king's ransom and be the highest paid player in the league? Personally, this offense could be handled by many QBs, not just the elites. As Strider astutely pointed out, last year's offense had a QB role that was more "Don't f*ck it up." Huge ass rushing lanes, relatively good protection, numerous short targets. And the guy finishes pretty mediocre in the ratings department, where his number should have shined. Not to mention the fact that Eli might be the only QB that is a liability at home when the weather is supposed to be most advantageous to the team.

It's a disgraceful contract. We should have looked throughout the league for trade value. I really think a lot of QBs that have essentially no value could manage this offense better than Eli. Limit the retarded throws, throw short passes, hand off, actually throw a spiral once in awhile to two or three wide open receivers. Am I wrong in thinking Jeff Garcia would have been amazing here? Can't think it just takes the elites to do what Eli is asked to do. And considering Eli is now getting paid as if he were an elite, it's a total crock of sh*t. A disrespect to players in the league and a slap in the face of Giant fans who don't want this team to just accept what is and not try and improve.
