Great news. Dwight still has his back up, hopefully Gortat gets more time with Howard out there as well and also a key trading chip after Dec 15th next year along with our trade exemption. I love the move! Makes our team that much better and that much deeper.

An NBA source has told the Orlando Sentinel that the Orlando Magic will match the five-year, $34-million offer sheet extended by the Dallas Mavericks to Marcin Gortat and thus retain him. The team would not be able to trade him until Dec. 15, at the earliest, if that's what the team wants to do.

If we can get Barnes or Wafer now we are much improved and deeper team then we were last year. Great move by Otis and the DeVos family to show they are committed to winning.

I don't understand why they wouldn't go over the luxury tax for Hedo but do for Gortat.

I don't understand why they wouldn't go over the luxury tax for Hedo but do for Gortat.
Probably because down the road they can use Gortat as a trade chip after Dec 15th or next offseason, plus they value a big of his size, centers in this league are a premium and Otis wants to protect one of his best assets. Our front court went from looking pretty damn lean to looking like one of the most formidable and deepest in the league. Howard, Bass, Gortat and Anderson. Nice versatility you can get out of Anderson. Decent rebounder and a hell of a 3 point shooter, which fits in well with this team. Bass is a bruiser, an absolute mauler from what I hear. This guy is built like a brick house and he can knock his free throws down, has a good 17 foot jump shot and can actually handle the ball a little from what I've heard. He plays good defense and he's the physical body this team so desperately lacked.

This team needs one more move in my mind, either Wafer or Barnes would fill out this roster nicely. If we get either of those guys mentioned no question we've improved this team.

And the issue with Hedo was that since we got Rashard a couple of years back Hedo and Rashard played the same position, but again this is before Hedo really peaked and had his career year two years ago. We then had two guys at the same position and though it did cause some good mismatches in our favor with Rashard at the 4 it also hindered us against teams like Boston, Detroit and LA who were much more physical. Gortat was a little cheaper, they didn't like their other options out there to backup Dwight so they said f*ck it, we'll sign Gortat and down the road he will be a tradeable asset if we want to explore that route. They can still mismatch you to death with Rashard at the 4 at times and Peaches at the 3. You can go Anderson at the 4 with Rashard at the 3. You can go with a front court of Lewis, BAss and Howard which will be the likely starting front court. I'm actually loving what this team has done, and deep down I always felt like we had to let Hedo walk, Hedo never matched what he two years ago when he had his career year. Everything was down this past year, especially his FG percentage. He tooks a ton of bad shots, made a ton of stupid plays at times and I thought was behind a lot of our in game collapses when we had huge leads and blew them. Now I also must be fair, he was our best play maker with the ball in his hand and he loved taking the big shot. Let's be fair though, Lewis hit just as many big shots as Turk did. I know VC can take a ton of bad shots as well, but I think we have a more dominant scorer and something this team lacked was a go to scorer and someone who can take over the game. As great as Dwight is, his offense skills still leave something to be desired and isn't the most reliable guy to just throw the ball into, especially down the stretch when you know teams will be sending him to the line.

Good point of view on this from one of my fellow Magic posters at magicmadness.net

Otis is a pimp. All those years I spent defending him seems somehow validated.

I know a lot of people are looking at this as confusing to spend so much on a back up center. Gortat is starting to look like one of the top defensive centers in the league and will help us a ton while we have him. -That being said, the real reason we signed him was so we didn't lose him for nothing. I fully expect us to trade him at some point after or during the season to fill out our squad with talent. That Gortat contract AND the trade exemption we just got could help us land a player that a team is looking to get rid of at the trade deadline. Can you IMAGINE if we wound up with Chris Bosh? It's a dream, but an increasingly realistic one.

The way Otis played Dallas was masterful, and at the very least we now have ALL of the frontcourt depth they would have had. Unless he sustains some horrific injury, the future looks very bright because of this move.

Yeah, Orlando will probably showcase Gortat, giving him additional minutes in the first half of the season, and possibly trade him with that exemption at the trade deadline in February. I doubt it would be right at December 15, but there could be a bidding war of sorts at the trade deadline.

With a chip like Gortat and our trade exemption, you gotta love the position the Magic will be in come the deadline. I mean if we wanted we can try and make a run at Bosh if Toronto decides they want to get something for Bosh now because we all know he's likely to bolt Toronto for greener pastures and to be back in the States. Plus by the Magic going VC and not Turk we are only locked into VC for two years then the third year is a team option so we can cut ties if need be. To me that would give us the flexability to not only trade for a Bosh but to sign him to a big contract as well since VC's money comes off the books in the not too distant future.

Will Toronto deal him? That's a good question, they should have a better team adding Turkoglu, but how much better? I'd say they could be anywhere from a 5-8 seed in the East, but if their frolicin' just under .500 and a low playoff seed in the East maybe they do deal him and try to get something. How would Gortat, Reddick and part of our exemption I think would get the deal done. They get a possible franchise Center which are few and far between in this league. You move Barnagni to the 4 and you have a great shooter to come off your bench and they want to become "Orlando North" from what I hear playing our style of offense and basketball. I'm intrigued.

Does Bosh then become a half year rental player for Orlando or someone they break the bank for after the season? He's going to command a max contract and will put Orlando way over the luxury tax.

That's obviously for ownership to decide. They stated they were willing to dive into the tax and they have this year. In the trade you shed the Gortat money and after the 10-11 season you shed the Vince Carter money as well. Season tickets sales are up, they are going into their new Event Center next year and expect even more money coming in from that. If they don't want to spend that kind of money and invest in Bosh into the future; I would completely understand. I'd be fine if it was just a rental, because I think it could be a rental that puts them over the top for a championship next year and anytime you have that opportunity you have to take it.

More On Marcin: Magic GM Otis Smith is in Las Vegas evaluating prospects. Smith told HOOPSWORLD that his decision to match the offer sheet on Marcin Gortat was about protecting an asset saying that the NBA as a league does not have many quality centers and he was not about to let Marcin walk away for nothing - "Afterall, we developed him." Smith was sensitive to the idea to the idea that he said he wouldn't match Marcin early in the process, but explained he felt the time was now to win a championship and keeping Marcin in the fold was about keeping the asset. Smith downplayed the notion he would trade Marcin at any point in the season but repeatedly referred to Marcin as an asset, more so than a player.

Sources close to Marcin are also here in Vegas and said today Otis has backed away from his "won't trade Marcin" stance. They also said it was likely Orlando would test the trade market for Marcin at the trade deadline, but it was far more likely the Magic hold on to Marcin until next year when better free agent options are available and he would be into the 2nd phase of Base Year Compensation and easier to move.
Marcin won't be buying a house in Orlando, but based on both conversations it seems both parties are ready to ride this season out and see where they are next summer.

What A Crazy Off-Season: More than one player agent has said they are struggling to understand this market place. On one hand you have player like Hedo Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani getting massive deals, yet proven veterans like Lamar Odom and Andre Miller still do not have deals. Orlando is throwing money around like it's going out of style, may open the season with a payroll in excess of $80 million, and they may not be finished spending as sources say they could be closing in on a deal with Matt Barnes. Here are some notes for today:

Barnes would be a really good fit for Orlando. Nice to see a bunch of teams making moves and the Knicks sitting idle. Watch LeBron, Wade and Bosh all resign through 2010. Joe Johnson here we come.

A Knick fan needs to really hope that the whole Shaq/Lebron combo fails and the Cavs have a subpar year and lose in the Semi's or Conference Finals of the Eastern Conference playoffs, then you might have a good shot to land Lebron. Also you can root for the Heat to have a rough go at it next year, although there is talk they might try to bring in Boozer and Odom for this year which if they do that I can see them being the 4 team in the East behind the Celtics, Magic and Cavs. If Wade isn't happy with how next year goes with Miami he could be another guy ready to bolt. Keep the faith brother.

It may not even be about the chance to win a championship in Cleveland. With the salary cap decreasing next year LeBron would be smart to cash in on a max level extension this summer. If Nash resigns in Phoenix I think Amare will follow, Wade would also probably sign an extension if they brought in Odom and/or Boozer and Chris Bosh isn't worth a max extension if he doesn't have another superstar next to him. Maybe we'll be under the cap by the time Durant becomes a free agent.

Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh are nice players (prefer them as second fiddle options, which is going to be tough with the cap going down), but Moomoo you brought up one key name. There are a couple of others who intrigue me. I'd still try to keep the cap manageable even if my long-standing plan of signing superstars a year from now falls through. Kevin Durant and Brandon Roy are two possibilities in 2011, I believe. Who knows what will happen as far as a trade out of New Orleans for Chris Paul.

Perhaps by the time those guys are free, the economy will have rebounded (no b-ball pun intended), the cap will go back up, some of the young Knicks will have begun to develop, and things will still be much better than they were under Scott Layden and Isiah Thomas. Those guys were never going to give the Knicks a CHANCE to sign someone who matters. Donnie Walsh has given them that chance. That's all I ask, as much as I want LeBron with Wade as my backup choice.

No matter what, Walsh's plan, a plan I had been begging to follow for years, is the right way to go.

You don't want to panic and give a guy like Joe Johnson a HUGE deal if you can't lure a Lebron or Wade. I agree with Matty, if you can't get a Lebron or a Wade maybe hold on another year or two for some other free agents.
