AkA Common Sense, what the f*ck happen to this kid man. Used to be one of the freshest emcees, a breath of f*cking fresh air. Damn, dude doesn't know what he is or wants to be now. Crossover? Damn Common, you failed. Stay away from Pharrell and Kanye. |

He started selling records, getting some mainstream popularity and parlayed that into movie roles. After spending the first half of his career in underground obscurity, life's gooder'n a muthaf*cka. And he can thank Kanye for that. Money will make you switch your style. "Truthfully, I'd love to rap like Common Sense. But then I sold 5 mil, and I ain't been rapping like Common since." - Jay-Z |

Did Jay-Z really say that??? Even with the help of Kanye he has yet to go Platinum. I think the high water mark was "Be" with 800,000 and gold status. He actually broke gold the first time on Like Water for Chocolate which was heavily produced by the late great J Dilla. Anyway, his sh*t with Kanye wasn't bad, but I thought both didn't put forth their best efforts at all. However, this sh*t with Pharrell is down right awful! Universal Mind Control or whatever the f*ck. Terrible! |

I will say this, 800K compared to like 50,000 united of Resurrection is quite an improvement. So yes, Kanye did help his ass sell a lot compared to what he did on his first 3 albums before Like Water For Chocolate. |

Listen to these. Those aren't even the best examples. I posted "Move On" because I was just listening to it and "Broken Wings" because he goes into an A-Rod/Jeter metaphor about his relationship with Jay-Z (who delayed his second album for three years and then dropped him from the label). |

"I'm the sh*t and y'all aint even passing gas" :bc: Nice line by Ortiz. Move On had a pretty tight beat, I liked that sh*t. No question Buddens is nice with the MIC. I always loved that Broken Wings beat when I was a young snotty nosed kid back in my days in Deer Park. Both of those joints would have my seal of approval. Plus when you have Jeter, A Rod, Cory Lidle and I think I even heard a Hank Gathers reference in there, that's just money as far as I'm concerned. I love when rappers use sports metaphors. I always had a soft spot for Fabolous due to that. Edited by Sori4Mvp, Mar 9 2009, 03:02 PM.

I'm sleeping on the WBC.
Check out the whole quartet (Joey, Joell, Crooked I and Royce) on Slaughterhouse. Budden said they're coming with an album this year. "Never in a hundred years did I think I'd be a rapper But in less than a hundred bars I knew I'd be a factor I'm PS4 in HD and the screen is plasma You're Atari 2600 with a weak adapter Between us the gap's so crazy I'm Gucci, Louis V, you're Gap, Old Navy I get coochie in the V, you attract no ladies" - Ortiz I haven't heard a bad Joell Ortiz verse yet. The first song I heard him on (when he signed with Aftermath and was getting some buzz) was something about growing up poor in Brooklyn. One of those gutter songs that ain't about crime and sh*t. He was talking about chicken wings and pork fried rice and borrowing his best friend's shirt. The flow was so-so and the rhyming wasn't great, but you could feel him; he had a realness. Then I found out he did have a nice flow and a more advanced rhyme scheme when I heard his "Duffle Bag Boys" remix. "So everybody's clockin' guap on they block with rock? All this lying's got to stop, pull up a chair and cop a squat I had the hottest spots rockin' while the coppers watched The runners ran, the poppers popped all types of choppers, glocks See, Ortiz chopped and chopped I was makin' the dough, generatin' the flow If the music don't work that's the other way I'll be able to blow I'm happily married to music now - I get a little change for a show But let's say it gets low, I'm divorcing the game and I'm a bachelor back to datin' the blow The jewelry will shine, the Dayton's will glow I'll be scrapin' up hoes And if anyone comes to me saying he owes The butt of the gun'll be breaking his nose I know that life, I lived that life for so many years..." |

He does a lot of sports-related punchlines. Cool thing is, he roots for the same teams I do. He had a joke about Giambi's parasites like a day after it came out. After the Giants Super Bowl: "My flow's sicker than Tiki in front of his TV seeing E flee then throw that game-winning TD to P.B." Last week he had a line in a freestyle like, "This year I'ma stay hot, buzzin'. And I got dudes to help me pump it up like A-Rod's cousin." I hadn't known who Hank Gathers was. Had to look it up. "The voices ain't leave yet, they're just gettin' they feet wet Eyes red, I'm up, ain't been to sleep yet Damn near two days, I ain't even eat yet If you don't wanna bounce, 'least take a little recess And still I'm faced with the bullshit Feelin' like Willy D, Scarface and Bushwick And just when I gather it's dead I gotta knock on wood like Hank Gathers' head" It took me a few seconds to get it. I was like, "Ohhh. Gathers died during a game. So when he collapsed, his head must've knocked on the court." Some of Joe's best sh*t is when he talks about his depression. On "Whatever It Takes" he personifies it and has a conversation with it. On the new album, there's a song called "Exxxes." I'm still trying to figure it out completely. It's about a chick who's got the same background as him (same tattoos) and they know everything about each other although they've just met; but they're opposites personality-wise and he doesn't like her, but they can't break up. "Is she just a symbol? There for me to look at everthying that I resemble Sometimes during sex I'll scream another name Does that mean I'll look at me and be ashamed? I'm cheatin' on me with a hottie with a body Who so happened to embody, everything that I so happened to not be I try to leave her, but then I get lenient Since I'm in this room alone, she becomes convenient And then we lie together, cry together I swear, I hope we die together..." |

Those two lines are probably the two best sports references I've heard in a rap!!! f*cking great!!!! As far as Gathers, I knew the story from seeing the movie as a kid, I think it was one of those made for TV movies, anyway, I caught in on WGN as like a 12 years old. I didn't get the connection at first when I first heard the song, but hardwood floor, him falling over and dying while playing, makes f*cking sense now. Anyway, always had a soft spot for Hank Gathers since seeing that movie. Him mentioning his name brought me back. |

It's been a while. Lemme get into it.
A chick can get a conniption when I spit to them Throw-away line, but the diction is still sick to them Slick talk'll get to them, the dick shot'll stick to them Get it? Without focus, I'm freestylin' an opus Your mind rewinds cuz each line is the dopest It's potent, and the spit scheme is mean With that birthday flow, it's a sweet 16 Can't stand bland, make a damn extravaganza Who's the boss of bars, I'm Tony Danza in a stanza Started in '03 with them cyphers in third period But the rookie was a natural; I was absurd, period On that battle tip, Bloods thought I was a f*ckin' lame Then I made heads turn when I shitted on what's his name Nothin' changed; since 10, with a pen, I could own the page Striz was ill in the arcades, rollerblades, RC Cola days I guess what happens with a layoff is you lose your speed. It took me longer to do that than it should've. I got stuck on the last two lines, trying to come up with a cheap mid 90s beverage. I was like, "What rhymes with 50-cent soda? Or quarter water? Damn, what rhymes with Tropical Fantasy?" I think every city kid between 20-25 remembers them shits. Before the junior high kids started telling us that it killed your sperm. When I was like 10, we'd stretch $2 after school. That was a $0.50 soda, a Little Debbie brownie, a pack of Winterfresh, three games of X-Men vs. Street Fighter and one Cruis'n USA (I never won, so f*ck that game, btw) before you headed to the park. Those were the days. |

My personal favorite, quoted one of my favorite chilhood shows and when you use extravaganza, Danza and stanza together, that's money! |
